Reading the thread I figured out I wasn't the only person looking for a decent map of karachi. Google Earth as good as it is, its a real image of karachi, but what would be more useful (for Karachites and Tourists alike) would be a map like maps.yahoo.com which is a vector map which data on locations, routes and my favourite, eating places. Apnakarachi.com has done a reasonable job, but it still isnt enough.
I was thinking of making a vector flash map with all the details, mapping them against the Google Earth images and putting everything up in a online website. Why Flash? cause GIS is too darn complicated and would need much more time rather than someone brainlessly tracing Google map images to flash.

Need comments, suggestions and volunteers. Oh btw I was thinking of using the mobile Flash SDK to put it on PDAs and Large Screen Cellphones as well.

Crazy idea, but so crazy it might just work.

Cheers,
-Aamir

Try <a href="http://www.mapkarachi.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.mapkarachi.com</a>

You can download the kml file and open it it in earth.goole. You can also upload it to the site so that your placemarks can be added to the Master file

Nearly all areas of Karachi are available on Google Earth. While on Indian government has convinced Google to remove central Bombay's close up satellite photo. This is outragious.

all the images r old & iut dated. So if Some secret agent of RAW or MOOSAAD locates an F7 outside a tarmac @ PAF Masroor , he won't be able to blow it off coz that image might be 2 years old.

I installed google earth on my pc a few days back, and this is really good, i have tried NASA earth imagery: eol.jsc.nasa.gov, where i was able to locate my mohalla, I tried something called world wind, but was not able to get any significant details of karachi, using Google Earth I can easily spot my house. It works pretty good with my 56K modem connection even whenthe minimum required is 128K. Google earth is simply awesome, see how they have removed the clouds from the satellite images. I think the reason for not updating the images is that it would be difficult to remove the clouds. Microsoft is also starting such a service called MSN Visual Earth, but right now its only for US.

Adnan, I have tried a software called GPSDash for my PDA. I will try out VITO MapManager and see how good it is. As for converting from PDF to JPG, the best program I have found is IntraPDF's Advanced PDF to Image Converter. I made a couple of Dubai maps with it, but had no luck because GPSDash compresses the maps so much that the details are all but lost. As I said I plan to check out VITO.
