Askari Park

I am intrigued by the so called state-of-the-art features that the park inaugrated by the president yesterday has. If all of that is true, and is maintained that way, then it would be a great place to relax other than the beach. At present, beach is only idea of fun for people of Karachi. It’s nice to have such parks where people could release some stress. Here is a suggestion, install a few wireless internet hotspots in the park and I guarantee you all the votes of geeks and nerds in the next elections.

ray of light

In the era when chaos rules, there is still somebody who is doing something good. For example, The Wildlife Department released fifteen thousand young turtles facing the thread of extinction, back into the sea. Read full news here.

Pet bird anyone?

Pitty. Awfully captured.

But look at the way these little creatures loot at you. Extremely innocent.

Motorcade woes.

A conversation between my driver and myself, stuck at Shahrah - e - Faisal, watching Shaukat Aziz’s motorcade pass by:

Me: God, hasnt it ended?

*10 more jeeps with army security personnel whizz by*

Driver: Lag raha hai jang horahi hai

I suppose the establishment’s ruse to stun and scare their countrymen is still working.

Another easy one, as promised.

Google Earth - Karachi

Google has recently uploaded some very high resoulution satellite image and it has some very decent pictures of our city Karachi. The resolution is remarkable that you can almost recognize your own house. Check it out and maybe download the free version from Google Earth

I wish we can together come up with a way to mark off individual locations for all bloggers in Karachi

Jamshed Ansari passed away.

Famous Television actor Mr. Jamshed Ansari passed away in Karachi (Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi rajion). I think he had a brain tumor but I havenít heard much of the news yet if, this, was the cause of his death.

He was born on December 31st 1942. In 1960ís during his stay at London he worked for BBC and acted in some stage dramas. He won around 55 national and 2 international awards including Quid-e-Azam award. Tanhaiyaan, Ankahi, Half Plate etc are only some names of his famous drama serials. Another legend gone, another asset lost. May his soul rest in peace.

This is so easy if you couldn’t figure it out I shall personaly come and kick your butt. You have 24 hours to guess the place.

Black Rag

While driving home from work I have repeatedly noticed a black cloth dangling from the exhaust tail pipe of various vehicles in the city. I am sure it’s not a recent phenomenon but was puzzled to notice it being so prevalent city-wide. Logically I reasoned it has something to do with the belief in “Nazar” but honestly (without being degrading) who would cast a second glance at a black-smoke-puffing rickshaw or for that matter a rickety-looking Suzuki FX.

Do shed some light on the Black Rag and if some knowledgeable blogger comes by maybe talk about how nazar came to be so popular, I doubt it has anything to do with Islam. (I request people to be courteous while talking about religion)

musings from afar

I’ve been in Lahore for a couple of days now, and while I certainly don’t miss the clouds of dust, the insane traffic jams and the narrow sidelanes that are being used as main roads, it is SO much more humid here than in Karachi. The air is still and oppressive, and while summer in Karachi is unbearable to say the very least, at least there’s always a breeze that makes it seem a bit better!
