Papa Rulz?

A new set of billboards has recently sprung up around the city. The first one I saw today was on the do-talwar roundabout loudly proclaming PAPA RULZ. The next one that came to my attention was PAPA POWER placed on Shahrai Fasial next to Roomi Masjid. What’s up any ideas!!!

A puzzling advertising campaign, I hope its something exciting as it would be sad to waste such a campaign on fathers day or for that matter a lame ‘ol power drink. Such puzzling campaigns need to be planned well with the right product as it can have a negative impact on the entire product line. Once its launched the hype must live upto it. If its a powerdrink they should come with a Bang like simply handing out free drinks city-wide (that’ll be the day).

Resturaunt! yeah I thought of that and my guess was PapaSalles but it closed down a few years back, if its coming back, which I doubt, but if it is, I think Karachi might be in a treat for some good food. I doubt its Papasalles – the campaign does not “seem” like a restauraunt promotion, but as I said “doesnt seem” I could be wrong. It has the vibe of a lame powerdrink

According to this month’s Herald, a restaurant chain called Papa John’s Pizza is opening here – I assume that the billboards are for that..

btw, does anyone here subscribe to magazines from dawn group?? are you getting the magazines on time??? I subscribed all three of their magazines (Herald, Spider and Aroura) last year, and was satisfied with their service so this time i went ahead and renewed my subs for two years in april…. since then, they have missed an issue of Aroura, and i still haven’t recieved even though i called and reminded them about it. I am yet to receive any of the gifts that were promised (called and reminded them about that too). and i always get the magazines 4-5 days AFTER they come on the news stands!! It pisses me off to see the magazines at Naheed Supermarket 4 days before I get mine!!! I thought subscribers were supposed to get it on time, if not before the news stand cuz they are your LOYAL readers!!!! Oh well, i guess i expect too much of a Paki publication house, even though it is supposed to be one of the top ones in Pakistan.

Well, yeah, the used to be punctual few months back but maybe they have got too many orders in their hands and they are not coping up with them. But atleast they DO respond to the emails which is something extraordinary for a pakistani service provider.

@Zag – the moment you mentioned the Jalapeneos and Liquid Garlic Sauce you made my mouth water. Are we jumping ahead of ourselves, it would be sad to see this adverizing campaign turn into a Fathers Day special or for that matter a lame power drink ;)

  18. Sharjeel (unregistered) on September 16th, 2005 @ 12:21 pm

Okay, my name is Sharjeel and this link was forwarded to me by our clients. I am the art director who worked on this papa campaign. I am not going to tell what it is all about but would like to add that this camapign was conceptualized and penned by the same person who made that Nando’s “underpass” billboard. The writer is a well known journalist who is one of our Creative Directors. This is all I can say, I just hope I don’t get fired for this :)

  19. Teeth Maestro (unregistered) on September 16th, 2005 @ 4:39 pm

Sharjeel – Thanx for coming by, come on maybe just a hint – I agree that you have to protect the identity of the brand – But would appreciate a simple acknowledgment if its the mouth watering Pizza place we are talking about in the above comments – you could give us a tensy wensy hint plz.

Your client did achieve, through your expertise the suspense, now the brand should follow up the hype with some good marketing later on, dont let finances fizzle out, as I have seen happen quite often, the hype lands flat on its face due to financial contraints (though I dont have to tell you the experts but this I must say – GOOD JOB !)

What advertising agency do you work for? I think I agree with many ppl here when they say it is that pizza chain papa jon. But anyway I really liked those papa rulze and papa power teasers. Lets hope it is not for anything boring like energy drink or whateva.

  21. Imtiaz (unregistered) on September 16th, 2005 @ 7:29 pm

Its definitely Papa Johns…but heres the break…they are only advertising in the KDA, sindhi Muslim, Shahrah e faisal & gulshan area…has anyone seen them in defence/clifton??

i run a marketing discussion forum called Mraketing-360 as yahoo group….anyone interested can join in the debates there too….

  22. Imtiaz (unregistered) on September 16th, 2005 @ 7:32 pm

    ooh..and by the way…
can anyone tell me how i can post my pictures here????

sorry for the trouble guys..but i just cant seem to find a link that tells me i can post pictures here!!

  23. Hassan (unregistered) on September 28th, 2005 @ 11:41 am

The marketing scheme was well planned and thought out before being visible to the public eye…..for those of you who dont know me, i helped out with this advertisement campaign for papa pizzas, and have done so in saudi arabia aswell. Unfortunately, i was fired 2 weeks ago, so here i am…CONFIRMING THAT PAPA JOHNS IS HERE!!! btw, i love the pizza….

  24. Anathema (unregistered) on September 28th, 2005 @ 1:54 pm

there is a Papa Ru;lz board facing two swords on the Plaza side.

  25. Zag (unregistered) on September 28th, 2005 @ 3:35 pm

According to the newsbit in Herald, Papa Johns wants to make Pizza as common/desi as Nihari is. Which i think means they will be opening up all over the Karachi and not restrict themselves to only one locality like Dominos has done. Also, by the looks of this initial add campaign, it seems they have the backing of a financially strong group who is not afraid of spending money to make money…. maybe finally someone will give Pizza Hut a run for the money. Papa johns in states offers far better quality than Pizza Hut, if they can mimic that here, they will be a step ahead already. Lets see how this race heats up..
