Earthquake – The Aftermath

From The News:

ISLAMABAD: The worst ever earthquakes in the history of this country rocking this morning has caused widespread distress to the people spanning over 80 percent of Punjab and 70 percent of the Frontier provinces, according to Metrological department.

Almost 12 hours after news of the earthquake spread like wildfire, the shock has not yet sunk in. While Sindh and Baluchistan have been left untouched, various rumors and theories have started circulating, one being that there will be aftershocks in Sindh as well, but of a lesser magnitude and will not cause a tsunami, which is obviously everyone’s number 1 fear. While relief work in Punjab, NWFP and Kashmir goes on, I wonder what caused a relatively newer building like Margalla Towers to collapse. What is even more worrying is that most of Gulistan – e – Johar lies on a fault line, and if God forbid there is ever an earthquake there, the ill-designed buildings would topple over each other in a jiffy. It is in times like these that we need to rethink our city’s structure, and prepare for the worst.

the saddest part is, with Margalla Towers falling within the capital, all media focus is there. Has anyone even considered taking cameras to Gujranwala, Sialkot etc and find out about the non-metropolitan, rurual areas where 250 chilren lie buried in school roof rubble? wqhy is that not being given media coverage? cuz the equipment cant reach there and the authorities do not want to admit their failure?

its just shocking. really shocking. i might be wrong but till BBC and Geo announced America and Japan’s figues, Pakistna did not even give a Richter measure, saying it was not possible. When Karachi suffered its spell of 2 Richter Scale (assumed figures, btw) in the recent quakes, the local authorities would only say the Richter scale machines were switched off at night and hence any jolts were not measured. WTF? The country has three plates running through it. We need more focus!

Excellent post huma. really. the authorities need to wake up!

Margalla Towers was another case of corruption and irresponsible officials. It’s been said by CDA now that they haven’t issued the completion certificate to the building which technically means that it wasn’t ready for occupation.
