Earthquake Relief

Have just received this text message from a friend – thought I’d post it here:

Kindly deposit any clothing, blankets or non perishable items at PAF Museum – new parking lot – on Sunday, 9th October. The Pakistan Airforce and Army are looking for your help.

Anyone else who is willing to donate should definitely contact the nearest Edhi Centre. If anyone finds out about any other relief agencies, please comment with info about it, and we’ll post it up.

I am in the UK. We are collecting donations here and Mash’ALLAH are doing well. One of the issues from friends and family on the ground is that tents specifcally are in short supply. My question is what is ACTUALLY required? Money, tents, clothing, another issue is Karachi has amassed huge amounts of donation but is unable to transport it there. So we do not want to send or buy from Karachi. We have arrangements with PIA in London to get it to ISB. Can anyone from this message board give a clear picture as to what is required?

    Jaza-k-ALLAH.

    Seffullah

SADDIE: I am talking within the framework of help – we need to know to which use we put the funds. And the best possible chance of those funds being used for that purpose…I will keep watching.

Your best bet is to donate to organizations that you feel will be able to put these donations to best use – theres a comprehensive list of NGOs on the metblog – you can donate to one of the international aid agencies, or to Edhi, MKRF, LUMS and NCA Charity Drives.

    Dear All,

As tents are short here in Pakistan, in my opinion it could be import from nearby countries especially Dubai, Saudi Arabia where a lot of manufacturers are present. We can use our diplomatic channel to make urgent arrangement. As Hajj is performed in Saudi Arabia I hope that there is a strong possibility to bring tents on urgent basis from there. Even we can utilize tents made for Hajj purpose as this event is 3 months ahead. and these tents cater about 2-3 million people at the time of Hajj. So, ask our offcials to convey this message in Saudia for this purpose.

May Allah help us in supporting our brothers and sisters at this great moment of national disaster. Aamin.

    Regards,

    Muhammad Asad Ullah

I am writing this from New Jersey, USA:

Can someone with knowledge of tents/camping gear as well as the relief efforts in Pakistan please answer the following question:

What KIND of tents are required, in terms of the material they need to be made of given the weather in the disaster areas? There are many kinds of tents available here in US stores, but people need to know which kinds to buy and send to Pak. Should they be light and easy to carry, or heavy and protective but more difficult to transport, how large do they need to be? Do they need to be able to stand up to strong winds? etc.

Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you.
