Just saw this headline: ‘Hurricane Beta hits Nicaragua coast’ – what is with the names of hurricanes these days? We’ve had Katrina, Rita, Wilma and now Beta!? Are Hurricane Omega and Hurricane Phi on their way?

They assign 21 names for Hurricanes every year. If more than 21 hurricanes occur, they name them as alpha, beta and so on. More info here:

Yes, They may come…. but nobody knows how much force they will have…
Actually Naming Hurricanes is a practice there from centuries initially they named them upon the names of different Gods… in early 19th they only use Female names but now a list has been published for six years span which contains all the names that would arrive during six years.
P.S. Omer (a muslim Name) is about to come in the coming year i.e. 2006
I think that such Catastrophic-to-be events, are named by their predictor / discoverer, they report the event (to be take place) to national weather centre in USA and the centre gave them an option to name them.
BUT i still wonder that why most of these storms, hurricanes, commits, meteors are named after women, mostly wives!!!!!!

google , google and google.
yes thats what i heard: the discoverer’s name is assigned to the hurricane.
all hurricanes are named after woman’s like wilma, rita etc etc… because they take away your home n cars like woman do :P
Actually they used to name all hurricanes and tropical storms after women years ago, because of the above mentioned reason! BUT..they have changed it now, it alternates, for instance heres a list of the hurricanes this season:
Arlene
Bret
Cindy
Dennis
Emily
Franklin
Gert
Harvey…and so on…
