Q. How Often Should I Brush My Teeth?

A. Dentist would always recommend that you should brush your teeth at least twice a day and for two minutes each. Brushing your teeth helps to remove plaque which causes tooth decay and can lead to gum disease.

You should prefer to use a soft bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Almost all the reputable toothpastes in the market have flouride, so before making the purchase ensure that it contains flouride. When brushing, use gentle back and forth strokes, brushing all sides of the teeth. Always brush your tongue to remove any bacteria and keep your breath fresh.

Time your brushing habit preferably for the entire two minutes, as this two-minute effort provides excellent resutls and will keep you away from the dentist. I see people everyday who have horrible teeth and they claim to have brushed but on further questioning it is more often just a 10-15 second brushing habit. It is for your own benefit to follow a two minute, twice a day brushing habit.

@Kunwal – Technically brushing can help improve the color of your teeth, but I would not be fooled into believing them to WHITEN them – over time good brushing habits tend to keep teeth cleaner and hence a little bit whiter, in my opinion – toothpastes advertising Whtiening yes has a little bit of the whitenign chemistry but vvvvery slow acting as the doasge is within tolerable human levels. So over time yes whiter but – over time

@ Nina – drop me an email about your blog – I may add it ;) since you asked so nicely ;)

@ Zubair – Free scaling for bloggers not a bad idea, Im thinking – and you may never know the offer just might come thru – keep an eye on Metblog for that news item ;)

    Doc,

Any idea about whether scaling harms the teeth or not? Is this procedure advisable? I’m thinking of getting it done when I visit Pakistan in a few days. Any idea how much it will cost?
