Hidden Gems?

We all know about the eating places that are in Zamzama and the major Clifton/Defence area. How about those located in other parts of Karachi? I am sure there are some gems out there that majority has missed out till now? For instance the number of places that have sprung along super highway is amazing. Although the food quality doesn’t match with the original “truck stand” resturants of the old.

Until recently I never knew about this fast food place named ìBovi Chicî located near IBA main campus. Their chicken burger is amazing and relatively cheap when you compare it to some of the foreign chains like KFC, etc. The atmosphere is also pretty decent. Any others?

There’s a place near shah-faisal-colony that sells probably the best ‘chapli’ kebabs i’ve ever had. Its a pathan hotel near shaukat hospital i think.

  8. saba (unregistered) on November 30th, 2005 @ 3:09 pm

The best chapli kababs are at Nursery!

  9. Zain (unregistered) on November 30th, 2005 @ 4:20 pm

  10. TB (unregistered) on November 30th, 2005 @ 4:36 pm

Saba is right, the best chapli kabab are at nursery near furniture market..go straight from Blue Ribbon bakery and turn left..:-)

  11. tanveer (unregistered) on November 30th, 2005 @ 4:44 pm

Best chapli kabab are at nursery behind blue ribbon bakery, next to carpet shops, try another place, its a pathan hotel in Drig Road after the railway underpass. they sell chapli kabab by weight.

When we were in college we would always go to food club on mumtaz manzil university road. They have the best beef burgers and banana shake in the most affordable price.

I remember right next to food club was another shop selling the same stuff and they used to fight for customers like cats. The winner’s chefs would actually start dancing sometimes.

ghousia’s pizza which is somewhere at saddar. i think its near jan’s broast. jo bhi, they have the most AMAZING pizza ever.

  14. huma (unregistered) on November 30th, 2005 @ 6:08 pm

and to be more precise, the chapli kabab place is in the lane that has the moltyfoam store.

  15. Zag (unregistered) on November 30th, 2005 @ 6:17 pm

Speaking of Kababs, Al-Kabab @ bahadurabad serves the best Kababs in Karachi, and i think there’ll be ppl who’ll agree with me that this is not an exaggeration.

Also, near Sadabahar lawns, therez Zamir Jafferi Kabab house, which is also good amongst the ones that have opened up recently.

  16. Khurram Farooq (unregistered) on November 30th, 2005 @ 8:52 pm

Zag, the original Bovichic is at Sakhi Hasan, near the big petrol pump (Caltex I think).

Also, I think al Kabab has closed down. I tried to find it a couple of times recently, but there is no sign of it.

Zameer Jaffery kabab house has amazing Chicken Malai boti that literally melts in your mouth!

Yeah food club used to be a really cool place, I remeber the date shakes, beef burgers and chicken shawarma well. Too bad it isn’t as good now as it used to be.

Good chapli kabas are also found near Hasan square, just before the SSGC building where you can see a lot of Notary walas.

I’m a food freak and know loads of places with good food in Karachi. Will keep updating this post with comments when I get the time and inspiration. Too bad that here in TehranI am only getting chelo kabab, murgh and aab gosht. Oh ya, you can find some really awesome and cheap chalo kabab at Lucky Star.

I LOVE going to La Rosh in Nazimabad #4…the best deal is the chicken tikka for 60 rupees its delicious!
Everything else they have is overpriced…but its a great place its always very roomy…great place to bring lots of friends or family.

  20. Khurram Farooq (unregistered) on November 30th, 2005 @ 10:56 pm

Speaking of amazing chicken tikka deals, there is this shop “Dehli Kababish”near my house which sells amazing tikka for only Rs. 35. The quality and taste is really good. Their otherbarbecue items are also good and very cheap. The directions are:

Going from NIPA chorangi to Hasan Square, you will find Masjid Bait ul Mukarram on your left. Immediately after the masjid ends, there is a road going towards the left (between the masjid and Nagori milk shop). Turn into that road, and keep going. Take the first right, and you will pass a row of shops on your right. After that row of shops there will be a big apartment complex (Hasan Center). After Hasan center there is another row of shops, and you can easily spot Dehli Kababish in almost the middle of that cluster of shops, on your right hand side. Go ahead and try it, just keep in mind that it is closed on Tuesdays as far as I remember.

how can we not mention bundoo khan!??
also, silver spoon kabab rolls on tariq road rock. and the most amazing chapli kababs are in orangi! you ask anyone in the orangi area where the kabab wala is and they can direct you. andddd the best nihari (better than sabri on burns road – i think sabri is overrated) is in north nazimabad. i think it’s called dehli sohail. been there so much that i’ve never really bothered with the name!

  22. Khurram Farooq (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 12:43 am

Quratulain… The name of the post is “Hidden Gems”. I doubt that you (or anyone for that matter) can call Bundu Khan hidden :)

Btw, has anyone tried that chinese restaurant behind Tariq Road snoopy. I don’t remember the name, but there are 2 chicnese restaurants: One is called “Little Chinese” and the other is called Kowloon I think. Kowloon is the one which is really good!

  23. abbas halai (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 12:57 am

khurram i believe you mean yuan tung restaurant off tariq road. one of the best in town.

  24. yo yo (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 12:58 am

And for desert after good food go to FEE FOO ( dahi baray )or RAJU ice cream ( special faluda ) …man u guys got my mouth watering…and the PATHAN KA DHABA in front of sir syed university…and its great paratha and tematar ki chatni….how i miss karachi

  25. yo yo (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 12:59 am

And also PUnjab juice house ki LASSI with extra malai…on burns road in front of urdu bazar

  26. Sketcher (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 1:02 am

speaking of deserts…try the Chaudry Farzand Ali Qulfi near empress market and aaram bagh buss stop.

  27. Khurram Farooq (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 1:26 am

Abbas: Yes you are right! It’s not Kowloon, it’s Yuan Tung!

And have you people ever noticed that everyone calls it “RAJOO” ice cream, whereas it is actually “RAJJO” ice cream. There is a big difference in pronounciation.

  28. zeeshan (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 2:17 am

    @yo yo
man the pathan dhaba that used to be infront of
sir syed has long gone. there is just a parking lot right now ,i think you haven’t been there since last two or three yares

  29. H (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 2:36 am

The first dhabba inside university, the ones near the administration department. That person makes the best, BEST biryani I’ve ever eaten. Ever.

  30. Farhan Hussain (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 5:00 am

Has anyone tried cafe pyala? that is hidden treasue in my opinion :-)

  31. Kamran (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 6:53 am

Farhan Hussain: the one past Ayesha Manzil, right? Yea, went there a couple of times. Quite neat.

How about the chana papri at bahadurabad? The one outside United Bakers (formerly, now abandoned). Next to Subhani Bakery. And, Baba ka bun kabab at burns road, and hawks bay ke pakoray? They’re available right before the road forks and there are shops on your left that rent coolers for cold drinks. Killer pakoray!

There is this mithai wala (now deceased, his son runs the shop) in kapra market, I forgot his name. Awesome mithai! Put on a lot of weight in my younger years, thanks to him.

There’s also this place for awesome kachoriyan near Liaquatabad. Can’t recall where exactly though.

  32. Zag (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 10:47 am

    Damn, so many replies…. anyway,

Khurram: Al kabab is still up and is always busy…. they are closed 2-3 days a week, when the meat is not available…. i guess they don’t believe in storing the meat for the off days… on the plus side, u always get fresh meat :) Also, will try to go to dehli kababish soon..

Quest: Surely u r kidding about the best chinese food in town, right? :) but would love to try it out… I always wanted to go and explore the eating places at N. Nazimabad, but never knew which ones are good… so thanks.

Imtiaz: Are you talking about Alamgir road as in the place near Alamgir Mosque? Then that is Zameer Jafri :)

Quratulain: Maybe next time you go for the nihari, u can check out the name and let us know…

Abbas: Yuan Tung is good, but i also liked the sweet and sour at seaview, i don’t know why it is always empty though…. also, ming court serves good food, but for me, the best chinese in town has to be dynasty @ avari, even though i m not a big fan of the fancy hotels, but man the chef there must be an exception as he is excellent!!! Sure it is pricey, but really good..

  33. Zag (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 10:50 am

Oh, and on burns road, has anyone tried that rabri house?? I don’t remember the name, but its really good…. and also on burns road, Waheed kabab house is good as well….

I don’t know whether this counts as a hidden gem or not, but noorani kabab house @ Khalid bin waleed road serves really good katakat especially with their naan fried along in katakat masala…

All this talk about food is making me hungry and its only 11 in the morning :P

  34. Zain (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 2:17 pm

Kamran, you are talking about Siddiqui Halwai in Kapra Market..

Has anyone tried Al-Majeed Nafees in Kharadar and the VIP Bakda near Tower???

  35. Kirna (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 4:27 pm

it’s times like these when you realize it’s not only lahoris who are crazy about food :p

  36. Farhan Hussain (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 5:30 pm

Yes bro. Kamran. The one past ayesha manzil. In the middle of Gulberg and umm… bufferzone roundabout.

Another great gem was Javaid ke Nehari in azzizabad. I am not sure if it is still around.

oh oh and has anyone tried Haji Mehfooz sheermal house?

You guys (and girls) are making me hungry at 6 am in the morning.

  37. Hush (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 8:42 pm

    hmm..lets see now!

Just under the Hassan Square building is a theley wala who sells fried fish. Best fish I have had in years!

Go a little bit towards Gulshan, outside the street which has Gulshan’s ‘Sir Jee Coaching Center’ there are two neighbouring burger shops. Time and Universal. Both have awesome burgers and coleslaws.

In Gulistan-e-Johar, across the street from RUFI complex, there is awesome chicken karahi. You sit on a takht (red carpeted takht).

  38. Laila (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 10:17 pm

Katakat at whimpys at MAHS and Kaybees coffee/vanilla icecream… I go there whenever I am in karachi.. I guess after eating the spicy kataka I always feel the need to walk across the street to kaybees to cool off with their creamy smooth icecream…..Feeling very nostalgic right now and hungry too . Dont know it they are hidden gems since they have been around for ages…

  39. Khurram Farooq (unregistered) on December 1st, 2005 @ 11:22 pm

Anyone tried Ice Cool at GuruMandir? It’s next to the big mosque (New Town Masjid). I/m not a big fan of chat, but this is the only place that keeps me coming back for more!

  40. Zag (unregistered) on December 2nd, 2005 @ 12:37 am

Kaybees icecream has nostalgic value i guess… even though there are better ice creams available, but therez something about kaybees…

Also, i second that chat at ice cool is really good…. but there is also one a little further ahead at the corner of the traffic light… that is also good..

  41. Sarwar (unregistered) on December 2nd, 2005 @ 2:46 am

Is Hanifia in New Town (next to the mosque) still there and do they sell hunter beef sandwiches? Best sauce (in the sandwich) I have ever had.

  42. Syed Muhammad Nabeel (unregistered) on December 2nd, 2005 @ 10:14 am

The post revealed many Hidden Gems so far… I like to add a summer special drink “ Tarbooz Ka Sharbat” quite refreshing. The best flavors are at Nipa and Water Pump (Near Aysha Manzil).

  43. MRK (unregistered) on December 2nd, 2005 @ 11:20 am

has anyone tried iceberg ki kulfi in saddar.. its the best kulfi i have ever had..
and what about food at haji abdul ghaffar… near tariq road…

  44. Zag (unregistered) on December 2nd, 2005 @ 3:08 pm

Sarwar: Hanifia is still there and they have expanded and have now branches spread around city.

MRK: Never tried their kulfi, but their icecream is good…. I think they are also located at other places than saddar

Another one is Afridi Karhai, at sea view near mcdonalds, i haven’t been there for a long time so i don’t know whether the quality is still good or not..

  45. Zag (unregistered) on December 2nd, 2005 @ 3:12 pm

btw, does anyone know the best coffee / espresso / capacuino in pechs, kda, gulshan area???

  46. Khurram Farooq (unregistered) on December 2nd, 2005 @ 5:21 pm

When people are done commenting, it would be a good idea to gather all the places’ names, specialities and locations, and make another post.
