KESC meters rigged by 35%

We have often blamed the KESC for ripping its consumers like crazy, a few days back I had a detailed discussion with a few independent technical consultants of the Hassn Associates consortium who are in the process of taking over the overall management of the KESC.

Prior to the acquisition they did an independent analysis of the KESC and found all meters were deliberately rigged and their speed increased by 35% of the actual rate. If you ever choose to doubt their meters the staff only offered to have them verified by only a few authorised KESC labs who usually either returned it with a clean bill of health or rigged it even more (*sniker*). A few more interesting facts that came to light from their investigation was that Kundas are not as big of an issue as normally projected by the media but accounts for only 4% loss of the total generation, but the main culprit is the commercial and industrial meters which accounted for 40% loss, this was because either the meters were disabled or bribed the meter readers to under bill the organization.

The new management has some very interesting plans to shape this organization lets all hope they have a peaceful ride, with Siemens at the helm of all technical issues I have little doubt that they can turn KESC into a profitable venture as planned in 3 years.

There is no reason they cant turn it into a profitable venture… generally entities all across the globe that are in the line of generating and distributing energy are fairly profitable.

I think residential connections are a problem as there are ways beyond a kunda too. A few years ago me and a bunch of my friends were staying over at a friends place and after a bit our host asked us to move into another room. I asked him why he wanted to do so when all of us were fairly comfortable where we were. I was told that since we would use the AC all night its better to use the other room as ‘Uss kamray ka AC direct hua hua hai’. This is not a kunda but the connection to that doesnt get routed through your meter and the KESC tech. would simply direct it to the AC by passing the meter. I hope the new management is not in for a lot of big surprises :-) After all it is our beloved Khi where people are just brilliant at inventing ‘short cuts’ for everything.

good luck to KESC and the new management but
as all ‘capitalists’ the new managemenet will do following stuff :
    a) increase prices thus effecting lower and upper middle class directly
    b) heavily investing on infrastructure means more revenue generation …
    c) will sack people , people good or bad worked in KESC all there lives effecting common people

good or bad , these lott will effect Karachi and Pakistan in a bad manner on both fronts humanatarian and finance wise as well ….
