“… round and round the Karachi!!”

Assalaam o Alaikum,

Lets get out of Defense and I.I.C road for a night [though I never lived there, but on khi.metblogs it seems everyone resides or works over there!]Ö

At 12:30 am [I know this sounds insane!], with a warm effect of heater in your closed car in a wintry night, deserted, traffic-less roads all to yourself, it cant be more fun having a Long drive with almost Full Moon and your family. Starting from Gulistan-e-JoharÖ while its not that late and you can still witness some of the late activities [like the wedding ceremonies] going around and then moving slowly towards Karsaaz, experiencing the newly built road youíll realize Karachi ainít that bad!

Then comes defense road, defense phase 1Ö all quiet and let you pass peacefully [Except for one or two bumpy roads of defense, I myself was amused on the smooth ride of Gulistan e Johar and Karsaz roads.] towards the Korangi whose signs can be seen far before it comes. Passing the Korangi bridge that is still under construction, and you can only see the pillars standing with lots of construction stuff laid around, we enter in a completely different world.

KorangiÖ where mostly the lower-middle class of Karachi lives. With lots of marriage lawns and everything, itís a big community and a world in itself. Other than the extremely unbearable smell of the naddi/nala passing under one of the bridge and the industrial wastage dumped over there youíll also find really narrow alleys and houses built on 80 yards only, lots of shops which look so better when closed, and some dhabbas/restraunts serving you seekh kababs, chaey and ìbhainson ka khalis doodhî even after 1 in the night. Except for the completely deserted roads, which are like heaven in night and full of traffic the whole day youíll see a few men trying to warm themselves with the fire lit in front of them. Or a dog or two running over here and there, trying to hide themselves under some car, to avoid the cold.

The buses are one business that runs all night on the roads of Karachi, giving the services to the citizens round the clock. And you can even tail them if you are lost in Karachi and you donít know which way to go out. Through the Korangi Creek , LaandhiÖ and after taking some wrong turnsÖ you come to Quaidabad, then comes Maleer.. and you end up at Airport, Sharah e Faisal!!! I was surprised to see that how near Korangi is from the airport.. or it just looked like that to me!?? 10 mins drive more and I was back in Gulistan e JoharÖ where there were more lights and life than the rest of the Karachi I saw this night. That completed our round of Karachi and I realized Karachi can be peaceful too only when everyone is ASLEEP!

One and a half hourÖ a tank full of CNG, 51.2 kilometers.. thatís all what it takes to move around WHOLE KarachiÖ but make sure its 1 in the night tooÖ or youíll be stuck for 3 hours or more in the traffic at different places!

    That was nostalgic…..
    lemme share my experience…..

about 5-6 months ago, my colleague (Saad) and i ventured out on a sunday in serach of billboards.

Our target areas were main roads and intersections all across the city.

We left from Rashid Minhas Road, where i live, to Shahrah e faisal, pulled a U turn from model colony, went all the way on Shahrah e faisal, straight upto tower from MA Jinnah road, turned again at Tower, onto II Chundrigar Road, pulled off to the PC/Sheraton wala road, headed off to cantt station ka area, then Khayaban e Jami, Shamsheer, Boat Basin, All around from 26th Street, Straight upto Defence Korangi Road through Kh. Ittehad. Conmected back to Baloch Colony Bridge via Iqra Uni wala Road, straight through to Shaheed e millat. We spun Around Bahadurabad/PECHS for a while, had a bite to eat.

Then he took over the driving seat, and we lost ourselves in the Nazimabad, Azizabad, Hyderi, FB Area region. (i dont really know that place, which is why he was driving). From there we connected back to Gulshan e Iqbal, did a spin of university road and a cpl of others and got back to Gulistan e Jauhar.

We were taking pictures of billboards all day..and i had accumulated over 200 pictures…all sadly lost due to my hard drive re-do i had in Sept :(

We got back at my place at about 9.30 ish…and we clocked over 120km. I dont know how much fuel (Official business, company car, company fuel :D)

but yeah….that was an interesting spin, tiring too, and i seriously couldnt have done it without having Saad to keep me company.

    Saad rocks, Karachi Rocks!
