Big plans for IIC Road

Seems like after few months IIC road is going to look much better. 200 million is a lot of money. Hope they don’t mess this up into something worse.

Traffic Hell…

As reported yesterday by Huma, DAWN is carrying a nice picture that’s going with the traffic dilemma we Karachiites are facing:

http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/images/2006/02/local04-thumb.jpg

“Massive traffic congestion made the life of motorists and commuters miserable in and around Merewether Tower on Monday, the first day of the implementation of new traffic plan.

“As the plan was devised in haste by the traffic and communication department of the city government officials, it not only created problems for commuters but for the vehicular traffic on M A Jinnah Road.

“Edhi ambulances also got stuck in the deluge of traffic as Edhi Head Office at Tower remained crowded and vehicles could not be despatched to various city areas.”

New Look

Good morning everyone. I am sure all of you must have noticed the new look of the blog. This new interface has tons of new features that you will appreciate as time progresses. The change is uniform across entire Metroblogging network. Enjoy!

I.I.C Road.

Who on EARTH came up with the idea of digging up I.I. Chundrigar Road? WHO!?! It has now come to the point where walking on the pavement is an impossible task, since the construction workers decided to dump truckloads of sand, and fragments of the road on the pavement. Hence, anyone who wishes to walk on I.I.C Road now has to walk on the main road, while navigating oncoming traffic and muttering last prayers under their breath, as the traffic never stops on that road. Of course, that also means that one has to cover their eyes and noses to protect themselves from sand flying in, hence one has to either walk on the street blinded, or pray that the sand will decide to miss their eyeballs just this once.

On a side note, the City Government has officially stopped all buses and mini buses from entering I.I. Chundrigar Road from today – the alternative routes are M.A. Jinnah Road and the Shaheen Complex Road. I didn’t see any shuttles plying on the road though, so have no idea if they’re going to use existing buses as shuttles or have special shuttles.

Shahrah-e-Faisal street lights renovation

Did anyone else notice the sign at SF in front of metropole? They are doing something with street lights. Someone told me they are going to use flood lights similar to what they have at Seaview. If that happens across SF it’s going to be ultra cool.

Match update 1

Ladies and gentlemen.
Here is your match update live from the national stadium in karachi.

Tea break just ended and we are 3 down for 77 runs.

The atmosphere here is absolutely electrifying. The noise, the energy, all carrying us away.

Im probably looking like an idiot makin this post while the match is on. So if you are at home, your tv should be on.

It’s Karachi, as usual.

i think the rest of Pakistan is suprised and disappointed at Karachi’s mellow, boring and peaceful strike.
I mean if people could get all emotional and fired up in Lahore, then Karachi was a sure shot.
If sleepy ol’ Isloo could see a few rounds of firing, then Karachi definitely had high hopes riding on it, as people across the country held their collective breath for the mayhem that would be this impetuous city.

But two days of strikes pass by, with shutters hesitantly down, main areas closed reluctantly and a partial hush about town, people go out and eat and shop in restuarants and malls protected by shamianas. They drive in streets blocked by containers and sit in the cool night, determinedly relaxed, air to have their chai and cigarettes and sheeshas even if surrounded by police-wallas. After all it’s only a strike and nothing can stop a city like Karachi. Especially on a saturday night.
