An animated movie has been created by Islam Channel & Fine Media Group about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It has recently premiered in London this Thursday (17th June) and will slowly be released worldwide.

The Islamic scholars based in Al-Azhar Islamic Research Academy have given their approval to the movie. The producers of the movie claim that no image or sound of Prophet Mohammad is ever displayed in the movie but His (PBUH) representation is dealt with through sound and cinematography. We experience him through point of view shots and through other people’s interactions with him. His presence is felt rather than seen or heard, and his message is conveyed through its effects on people and events.

To be honest, I have been at the receiving end of a lot of chain emails against this movie, (probably from those who have not researched this issue well enough). What is you analysis on this movie, and will it be released in Pakistan without any hiccups?

Link to Movie website: www.muhammadthelastprophet.co.uk

A few FAQ’s from the website have also be included for your understanding

Q. If this is a movie about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), will he be shown

A. No. Muhammad (PBUH): The Last Prophet is similar in plot to Moustapha Akkad’s 1976 live-action film, The Message. While the events surrounding the Prophet’s life will be highlighted, the Prophet himself is never seen or heard. His representation is dealt with through sound and cinematography. We experience him through point of view shots and through other people’s interactions with him. His presence is felt rather than seen or heard, and his message is conveyed through its effects on people and events.

Q. Why won’t Muhammad (PBUH) be shown?

A. In Islam, representations of God, the Prophets and other highly religious figures (the disciples, for example) are discouraged. This is motivated by the following rationalization: by not putting a face on God or the Prophets, no race/status/gender is indicated. Therefore, the images themselves won’t be subject to worship or idealization over the idea of what they represent. The absence of their images does not mean that their messages don’t take center stage.

Q. Can you tell a story about God or the Prophets without seeing or hearing them?

A. If you are creative enough, yes. You can tell a story about how they impact other people, shape events, and influence actions. Not seeing the wind doesn’t preclude you from feeling it. In the same way, one may recognize the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) impact on Arab society whether they were there to experience it themselves or not. The story of this particular film is framed around the experiences of one man with the Prophet and how the message of Islam impacts his daughter, who was born after the Prophet died. Generations of people across the globe and the centuries followed the Prophet without meeting him, and for millennia, people of all faiths have believed in God through blind faith alone, aware of his presence through nature and/or his Prophets.

Q. Why should Muslims see this film?

A. Because it is a great film! It is also the first animated film by and about Muslims to premiere in theaters in North America. In order to ensure that more films by and about Muslim get made, it is important to support such films, especially by the Muslim community as they venture into the mainstream movie industry. We hope to produce bigger and better films in the future!

Q. What is the movie about?

A. The movie is set about 1400 years ago during the early years of Islam and follows the story of Malek as he narrates his experiences to his daughter, Siham. He remembers a time when slavery, superstition, gambling, drunkenness, and greed ruled the day in Mecca. Memories of poverty and corruption give way to the winds of change as Malek relates his experiences with a man named Muhammad (PBUH). Forty years old and deeply troubled by the Meccan status quo, Muhammad (PBUH) retreated to a cave in contemplation, and it was there that Angel Gabriel revealed to him his prophecy. Renewed by the message of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) took his message of peace, tolerance, dignity, and social equality to the Meccans. The film relates the events that unfolded that led to the rise of a renewed religion in the Arabian desert, eventually spanning 7 continents and counting 1.6 billion adherents around the world. This story is as relevant today as it was in Malek’s time, and aims to introduce the story of Islam and its Prophet to new generations.

Q. How can you discuss all of that in one film?

A. It wasn’t easy! The script, originally 4 ¬Ω hours long, was trimmed to 90 minutes. Not all of the events or people important to the rise of Islam are mentioned. Only key events are covered to present the main thrust of Muhammad’s (PBUH) message and the struggles early Muslims endured to protect that message and bring lasting change to Meccan society. The film is an introduction to Islam, and hopes to inspire and encourage further study of one of the most important religions in this day and age.

Well the movie is definitely going to create images of Sahab Karam (R.A) in the mind of viewers. That is not acceptable.

I wouldn`t mind if someone played the role of Muhammad(P.b.u.h) … i mean why is it such a taboo…we have seen Christ and Moses being portrayted… what harm did it bring…i dont see any harm in that…jamia-al-azhar does not own islam…

Al-azhar! well they can give permission to anything.I dont know why alazhar is consider so authentic among muslims.

regarding sahaba karam images.I am not sure about it whether its permitted or not.In general making sketches isn’t allowed in all abrahamic faiths.THE MESSAGE showed images of Hamza(RA) but not images of the four caliphs anyway.

Channel is qadyani??hmmmmmmm, anyway it is or not,i am not intrested in it.

Where does it say that ONLY Prophet’s image is forbidden? The order is given for every living creature. Even the turks in the past made this mistake. They sketched portraits of Masjid-e-Nabwi, only removing the Prophet’s face. following are some hadith from Bukhari which clearly state that pictures are forbidden in Islam. I have not been able to reach the explanations for these hadith. Anyone who has Tafseer-Bukhari in reach kindly provide the explanation, as to what extent these hadith apply.

    1.Volume 4, Book 54, Number 447:
    Narrated ‘Aisha:

I stuffed for the Prophet a pillow decorated with pictures (of animals) which looked like a Namruqa (i.e. a small cushion). He came and stood among the people with excitement apparent on his face. I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! What is wrong?” He said, “What is this pillow?” I said, “I have prepared this pillow for you, so that you may recline on it.” He said, “Don’t you know that angels do not enter a house wherein there are pictures; and whoever makes a picture will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and will be asked to give life to (what he has created)?”

    2.Volume 4, Book 54, Number 448:
    Narrated Abu Talha:

I heard Allah’s Apostle saying; “Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal).”

    3.Volume 4, Book 55, Number 571:
    Narrated Ibn Abbas:

When the Prophet saw pictures in the Ka’ba, he did not enter it till he ordered them to be erased. When he saw (the pictures of Abraham and Ishmael carrying the arrows of divination, he said, “May Allah curse them (i.e. the Quraish)! By Allah, neither Abraham nor Ishmael practiced divination by arrows.”

    4.Volume 9, Book 87, Number 165:
    Narrated Ibn Abbas:

The Prophet said, “Whoever claims to have seen a dream which he did not see, will be ordered to make a knot between two barley grains which he will not be able to do; and if somebody listens to the talk of some people who do not like him (to listen) or they run away from him, then molten lead will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection; and whoever makes a picture, will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and will be ordered to put a soul in that picture, which he will not be able to do.”

I hope these hadith will help you understand why cartoons are not allowed, be it He-man, Swatcats or Prince of Egypt. They are forbidden by Islam!

I dont know much about story of that cartoon and its characters.

I just wanna remind you all that in holywood they made a movie about islam , title of that movie was THE MESSAGE. In that movie they showed all famous companions of Prophet peace be uopn him except first four caliphs of Islam.

That movie was released in 1976, I watched that movie when i was too young so I didnt know that whats wrong with that movie as some ppl told me later that you shouldnt have watched that movie cuz in the movie non believers played parts of some most respectable personalities of ISLAM (I think even muslims are not allowed to do this) , as ANTHONY QUINN PLAYED THE PART OF HAZRAT HAMZA and others plz check the following link for detail,

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074896/

I bought the DVD of that movie one year ago but i couldnt watch that movie due to above reason, though they have represented ISLAM in a very supportive way.

I want to ask you guys whether I could refer or lend this CD to those who are non-believer but are keen to know abt ISLAM as this movie represent the true picture of early days of ISLAM.

Looks like another spanner LANDING in the muslim machinery. Although it is wrong….hopefully we will use Prophet Muhammd’s (PBUH) teachings and sensibly/wisely respond to this.

@Nocturnal, hey how are ya doing? So you want to teach “non-believers” about Islam. I know I’m just a transgressor, but do you really think your qualified for that? I mean you know nothing about the outside world and how muslims live in other countries and you think they are all transgressors. Someone as narrow minded as yourself should not be teaching anything. You don’t belive in Islam but his-lam. Your made up version of Islam. Plus you have no reguard for womens rights. You mixed religion with human rights and dignity. You are quite ignorant in my book. And I also feel you are jelous of a girl like me because you can’t take away my FREEDOM.

@sophia:i read your comments about hadiths in another post and i must say you are a genuine sad case. You are abusing others and then claim to be a good muslim.I am tired of hypocrites like you.You plainly rejected hadiths without knowing the background of it.Quran might not have the word “hadith” at all but quran DID order several times to follow actions of Muhammad(SAW) and you wont find Actions of muhammad(saw) in quran, they are only available via hadiths.

So better dont preach your own version of islam. If you dont follow hadiths, good with you nobody cares at all but dont twist the islam itself by preaching your own religion naming it as “Islam”.

@awab:is Imtiaz suggesting me tht i should not be comment here because i might be pissing off KMB managment.Read here his comment

Why KMB managment is so touchy and why can’t they accept criticism?.I requested Imtiaz to clarify his statment bt he didnt so i assume that was for me.I won’t stopping comment, yes I can be banned like many other were banned here and it doesn’t bother me at all. Then KMB managment can allow only those who sing their praises only.Typical Musharraf sort of managment.

@adnan, I don’t understand what you mean by sad case? I am a young female who owns My Own bussiness which I aqquired by my own hard work. I’m sorry you have to steal my lines by saying “my version” of Islam. Try to be more original next time. I never said I was a good muslim or the best muslim. I’m sure I could never be as good as you and your friends over there. One qustion no one answered for me last time: Where in the Quran is it written to read the hadith? By the way Adnan the sad case is you because you asked me for my e-mail and hook up last time and said you had a “crush” on me. Notice how I ignored you completely on that one. Also apparently your own blog must be hell-a lonely because you are always on these blogs. Oh well makes sense to me.

As general rule we all feel that blogging is truly about interacting through comments and they are essential even for KMB, but we would naturally have the discussion more towards constructive criticism that just destructive rambling, that said, I assure you all is good with everyone

I have nothing against Imtiaz or any other.Yea for few days i have been gettin agreed with poo because he raised valid points and I stronly believe rules must be equal for everyone.hope i won’t be considered another *troll* here.

Because you are being a potty mouth and keep calling names of everyone who is

against you and i am new addition on your list.I despise such kind of people

    thats it.

I am a young female who owns My Own bussiness which I aqquired by my own hard

    work.

Who gives a damn if you are young as well as a female?seems you have somr

sort of complex and you are trying to convince others that you are a *young*

female.Try to refrain such things in future,it wil be good for you.And i

didnt didnt any thing of yours, what a nonsense!!

I never said I was a good muslim or the best muslim. I’m sure I could never

be as good as you and your friends over there

I never claimed either tht I am something good, did I?

One qustion no one answered for me last time: Where in the Quran is it

    written to read the hadith?

    read below:

I cant paste the next; just giving you numbers of verse as this post will get lengthy and i am not

    to rape inbox of awab.

    Quran(33:1,33:21,53:1-4,33:71)

Offcourse there are many people who seeks excuse for not obeying hadith by misinterpeting quranic verse like

“The only duty of the messenger is to deliver God’s message” 5:99″

Indded thats all He had done or others came before Him(Saw),from Adam to Jesus.Muhammad(saw) never gave His own lessons

and as i quoted verse, whatveer he said was words of Allah. In quran you wont find procedure of namaz. Now ppl who reject hadiths, how will they learn to say namaz?By referring jews?S in short hadith/sunnah are similar things in a way that it teaches to perform things which were performed by Muhammad(SAW) at hat time because Only muhammad(saw) was the prophet and only He used to talk God or recieve messages via Gabriel.

Adnan the sad case is you because you asked me for my e-mail and hook up last time and said you had a “crush” on me

I was being sarcastic kid and you got serious?tsk tsk why our girls like that????

for rest of your crap,i have a quote for you:

So dont curse me if i avoid you in future and dont reply your lame comments.

If you need one I can give you contact ( and I WONT ASK FOR YOUR EMAIL ). You are not a lesser muslim than anyone of us. Only Allah knows better. @Adnan – I do remember you writing that comment; I’m afraid you are going to have to go forward with it now. Can’t just say you have designs on a ‘good muslim girl’ and then back out. Well children, you have my blessings.:)

  27. bublee (unregistered) on June 20th, 2006 @ 6:02 pm

Salaams… i think whoever wrote the thing about Islam Channel being qadiani has got confused in another channel which also appears in the UK (cant remember the name). Islam Channel is run by a group of moderate Muslims and to date they have produced very effective and educating programmes masha Allah.

On a separate note – the issue someone else raised about the creation of images being prohibited in Islam is absolutely correct. In islam we are not actually allowed to depict any living creature as on the day of judgement Allah (SWT) will ask us to blow life into it… an ability we humans lack.

The reason for prohibiting images is because in the days prior to the advent of Islam idol worshiper would create their own man-made gods and worship them (these are referred to in the Quran, Surah Araf, ayat 148 and Surah Anbiya, ayat 51 – 54).

On the point of the cartoon, well this is not a new phenomena. Some of you may recall the film “The Message” which was produced in the early eighties – this followed the same storyline and it was very popular amongst Muslims of the day. One of the main reasons why it was such a hit was because the lead character was not shown, and nor were any of the four Khulfa-e-Rashidun depicted. Only the history of Islam was focused on.

In the end it is up to you what you believe, but i think if your belief system or knowledeg on a particular matter is weak or you are unsure about something, then insha Allah its better to remain silent.

@bubblee: dear you should learn to read. I had said nothing but good thingsabout Pakistani’s in the past unfortuneately I have been speaking to a minority of very judgemental “people”. I do know that majority of the Pak people are very decent and humane. I have stated this in the past. However that is not the case here. You need to worry about yourself and don’t be a follower be a leader. Honestly most of these people who have been criticizing me are in my view exteremists. It’s a terrible thing that people are litterally dying to get out of there. But until there is Equal Protection under the law for All and Human Rights recognized than maybe the country will see prosperity one day. You have no idea how many people here white, Indian want to do business with Pak. But the reputation proceeds itself. These blogs show what alot of cowards really think. I think its funny that people have attacked me in this way when I initially appprached with open heart and mind. But really I don’t mind. I have realized how truely blessed I have been in my life. Just today I was out and about here and I saw women of all races and backgrounds some wearing short dresses and a few in full hijab just walking along together completely free. With confidence. The truth of the matter is I would die for this country because I believe in what it stands for. I wish I could say the same about Pak. This country has given me well, everything. I would never have had the same chances ever in Pak. Especially as a woman. These cowards are only saying things because 1. they know I am female 2 they envy me because as a woman(and I know this for a fact) I have probably accomplished more then they can imagine without any help from mom and dad. But Bubblee you must remember in a city like Karachi where at least 2-3 times a day New born baby girls are reported to be found in the trash heaps what else can one expect? I find this blogging to be really hilarious at times. You have no idea.
