Angelina Jolie set to add to Karachi’s notoriety

When Hollywood decides to make a movie featuring Karachi, you know it’s unlikely to be positive. But the killer blow is when Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and the English director, Michael Winterbottom, decide to make a movie based on the book writte by Daniel Pearl’s widow, Marianne. Brace yourself for a storm of negative press on Karachi once the movie is released. Somehow I don’t think any of the stars will come to Karachi for the film’s premier – if indeed it is ever screened in Pakistan.

Its sad but true about what you said and once again Karachi and Pakistan is going to be targeted again by biased media. Yes this country and city has its problems but so does NYC and London. I think as long as we stay strong and stand by what we believe the true karachi is opinions will change.

    M AT,

the only problem in ur theory, is that Pakistan govt and its intelligence outfits (Sheikh Omar ) were behind the Pearl murder.

Sheikh Omar had been long operating in Kashmir with Pak’s blessings.

I thought Jolie to be very fond of Pakistan, then how come she’s doing it…

All I can say is, people with digital cameras should keep taking lots of positive pictures of Karachi life, and flood them over the internet by uploading them to different sites. Then only when somebody searches for Karachi, they will know that it is a good city on the whole.

I guess we would need to fight this war on our own.

this is going to suck. Pakistan doesn’t need more bad press, especially from hollywood, we already have india defaming pakistan’s name everyday.

    Well…SWA u r right…..

Hey people…..we must bring our best resources to get the image of Karachi better….

We must fight it over the internet….

And if someone has the tv-media resources then he must use that…

This is too much….Karachi isnt much dangerous internally as it is supposed to be….

All the major terrorism in the city is done by the out-siders… Afghans…

Great idea SWA, I second that. There are couple of accounts on flickr that contain images from the different parts of Pakistan but I guess we need more and more public web sites!

Also, spread the following link to as many people as you could:

I burned the above mentioned video on 150 CDs along with the Pakistani anthem in different formats, a web site for tourists who want to visit Pakistan (courtesy of the Embassy of Pakistan Washington DC), Pakistani pop video songs, dramas, etc and distributed those during the Asian American festival (

I still have the tourist web site if anyone is interested in. I am not sure how big it is but if anyone is interested in it, let me know.

By the way, as far as the new film is concerned, we all know what it is going to be; I don’t think the Pakistani community or the Embassy of Pakistan is going to protest about this movie unlike the Jeweish lobby who protested against Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ”. I am for sure going to write to the Embassy of Pakistan to take some action, atleast create some awarness or do something to negate/limit the impact of this movie here in USA, but I guess SWA is right!

We all have to fight this war of propeganda against Pakistan

Sorry for the irrelevant comment but I just found out that BBC has some openings for

Give it shot guys! Journalism is one of the areas where we don’t have presence!

What are you’ll guys worried for. Isn’t this all truth? Yup, truth is biiter. But unless we all put our act together and defeat these retards who are defaming our city we are going to encounter such movies and books. BTW the book by Pearl’s wife (who was pregnant at the time) is a huge success and hollywood is all about money. If some circles tried to bycot it then you do nothing but made more people to attent it as we all saw in the “Da Vinnci Code” case.

Thanks for the news but I am sure it would turn out to be the same kind of action that some Europian country took a year or two ago by killing some innocent Pakistanis and portrayed them as terrorists! he did it b/c that country wanted to be in the good book of US! I tend to believe that Nepal is doing the same to be in the good book of India and to get more monetary help from them …

well the way media portrays us is very important but more then that is the pakistani ppl living abroad who make the real impression..
there are so many of em who went from all the wierdest places of this country and had nothin to lose.. didnt care about wat they had to do and how they had to do it.. they just cared about money and thats wat they have transferred into there next generations as well
there are very few communitites abroad who actually make ppl like us

I wonder why are we so obsessed with impressions, and not with reality?

  20. MB (unregistered) on July 19th, 2006 @ 11:13 am

Because , for good or bad, impression is what is couting my dear. Look at India. The impression is they are a democratic to core. And we know the truth.
