Rabia, 35, Burnt Alive !

Rabia, 35, a mother of two, and a resident of Daata Nagar Orangi Town, was burnt alive by her husband (Shahid) by sprinkling petrol on her body in their house in Orangi Town police jurisdiction, yesterday. (visit NEWS or DAWN for a full story).

We respect Women, we leave our seats for them, we allow them to pay utility bills first, we have special space in our busses for them, if their car break’s down we stop and help them even if we are getting late for something really important. But is this respect or just another way to tell them that they can’t live without men’s help? If we respect them then why do we harass them when ever we get a chance, why we always try to judge their character and classify them in two kinds (good and bad), and why it is always a women who gets burnt or killed over suspicions of having illicit relationships? Don’t men do that too ? Why don’t they ever get burned ?

JAMASH..you are seriously wrong in judging the the mood of our people towards women. If the good that our women get in society dose not get published it dose not mean it does not exist. Having said that I condemn this act. Which is the work of a madman and not the representative of our society and its cultural values

No doubt jamash that moron must be burnt as well and this act by him is not appreciable.

You mentioned most of the things which happen but my friend you forget that the real enemy of woman is not a man but another woman(Mother-in-law in such cases).Such mothers keep forcing their sons to take action against their wives. There is no doubt that such men are sick and idiots that they just follow their mothers and ignore the sincerity of the woman itself. But if two women(saas and bahu) compromise with each other then there will be a significant decline in such death rates.Anyway the man should be strong enough to keep things in control. The news dont reveal details of the conflict.

Don’t men do that too ? Why don’t they ever get burned ?

I know I am gonna trigger nerves of some feminists here but the fact is difference in mentality. The jealousy factor in women is more than men and even many women accept it with open heart. Will any lady here deny this ?

“I know I am gonna trigger nerves of some feminists here ”
No Adnan, You are going to trigger nerves among decent men of Karachi which you certainly are not one of them. Its people like you who always for one or other reason find excuses to justify the cowardly act committed on innocent and helpless women.

“The jealousy factor in women is more than men and even many women accept it with open heart”

It’s totally rubbish to print the jealousy factor among sexes unless you can back it up with some hard data otherwise qualify your sentences as in your opinion which happens to be case here.

I hope either your wife or girlfriend reads your thoughts on women’s issues here for her own safety (unless of course you are a Hijra)

The thing is that a lot of men in our society havent learnt their own responsibilities as far as behavior towards women is concerned, and find it easier to point the blame finger on women. But most of this attitude is usually found in people who havent been educated properly whether in the high class, or low class societies.

I think every classroom should have lessons about these kinds of issues. Avoiding them isnt the right way to go. Women themselves need to be educated because an educated mother will raise an educated child.

Police arrested Shahid, who confessed to have burnt his wife on suspicion of infidelity

    from
    DAWN
What horrific news. I don’t know it is still acceptable but a decade ago (in Pakistan) husband can get away with murder if he killed his wife on suspicion of infidelity. There were several cases where they were proud to do it. I guess that thinking of considering women as men’s property still prevails.

Here is an article by Amnesty International on similar topic.

The guy confessed that he killed his wife on suspicion of infidelity. I guess
you forgot to click these links (NEWS

What more proof you’re looking for?
    @SWA
    Great solution.

Welcome to the club. This is the thought process which we women had to fight
all our lives from childhood to adulthood. I am a believer of equal rights for
all male and female. But in our society there are some people who think women is
    responsible for everything.
Do you know in 90’s a student wing of a political party (believes in Gen.
Zia’s ideology called Jamiat) is considered themselves self proclaimed moral
police. They continuously harass girls by calling their homes and spreading
rumors about them. When their tact’s doesn’t keep those girls home they spray
bleach on them. Their only crime is they happen to talk to a guy in public.

You are so full of woman hatred that forgot to read whole story. Here a MAN commited a crime and you’re lookin an excuse to blame it on a woman.

What next? Since some woman gave birth to that Man so may be it’s his mothers fault.

NOT everything is about MAN and WOMAN it’s about human beings. Try to consider woman as a equal human being so then might be feminist wont jump you.

Sure! The mother of son feels wife is taking away his son, wife feels that saas wants to ruin her family so she keeps talking crap about her saas with husband. The husband who is already get screwed in office shit has to believe one of them and then factor leads burning of wife most of the time when a Saas(A Woman) helped her son to burn her Bahu. Or a bahu kicks her saas out of home .Will you deny it dude?

The other which I experienced myself during university life. There were only 5 girls in my class and around 50 guys.5 were splitted into 3-2 groups and it was coz they were used to talks against each other. on other hand,we 45 guys had no issue with each other. There were different guys groups in a class but had no negative feelings unlike those girls.Today I am still in touch with those class fellows who were not closed friends but these guys still ready to help each other. In short, guys dont keep things inside for long time.If a guy A has issue with B then after a short period of time, they will usually forget.Girls usually appear less cooperative with each other. It was also told by my female cousins and friends who studies in different universities.Backstabbing is pretty common among girls.

I never claim guys are pious but such elements are significantly low among them.

I hope either your wife or girlfriend reads your thoughts on women’s issues here for her own safety (unless of course you are a Hijra)

Dear Salim there was no need to be a potty mouth to disagree with me.I dont have a wife yet and I am not into girlfriend thingie but yes I do have female friend and I do discuss different thing including thise one and they are honest enough to admit several things. My thoughts are not extreme, neither against female gender. Its a woman who provokes a man to burn a wife(might not be in above mentioned case). It is a woman who provokes his husband to kick her old mother out of home coz shes being pain in ass.Lets admit the reality. Why doesnt a woman reject to marry an already married men?Man is a factor in all such evil things but hes not the only factor at all.

@Miriam:yes i read that link first before commenting here but its not clear how did it came into his knowledge.Okay for sake of argument I agree tht the guy was not provoked by his mother and he just did it.But when a man comes back from office to home, wife starts chanting list of complaints against saas and vice versa. Please! One shoudnt be so much against men.Dont hate and blame men blindly.

So saas bahu conflict is a justification to take kid’s mother away?

@Dee:Who the hell is saying that?Dont put your words in my mouth.I already condemned the act of men.Read my post again. What all I replied against Jamash’s view who was generalising that all men are evil and they are only factor to kill their wives, while reality is something else which I tried to mention.

@A human being:And I must say that you lack the ability to grasp opinions of different people. Its not my fault if you aint able to see things around you.

NOT everything is about MAN and WOMAN it’s about human beings. Try to consider woman as a equal human being so then might be feminist wont jump you.

Déjà vu! Why do i feel that such tone is pretty familir for me?why are you not usnig your orignal identity? :>

Anyway, again I reject your quality crap.Identifying problems doesnt make one an evil.Noone is against any woman.Dont consider me equal to Musharraf who gave a sick statment againt mukhtaran mai and others victims. Most of you feminists posses empty brain and utilised all of energy to stage a war against Men.If you utilise only 10% of your efforts to eliminate *blacksheeps* within your own gender then many of problems will get evaporated itself. Majority of times we guys talk weakness of each other, point out different culpriit elements in men’s society but none of them start hating me because i was against those men.

This is a very shameful fact of our society. Women are treated as animals in most parts of Pakistan.

The way out is for media to give continous coverage for issues and women also need to take a stand on their part to try and highlight such incidents and people involved in it.

Its a long and painful path but there’s no alternative

@Erum:If I am being targeted then I am not ashamed of whatever I said.If one doesnt want to see the truth then I am not bothered. At one side we whine that we are being victimized and on other hand we are afraid to dicuss it.

Curse me,hate me or even screw me I dont care, but I dont prefer to follow something blindly which is far from truth.

@Adnan: You certainly have right to your opinion (truth or not) that’s what makes these forums lively. But looking at the entire thread it seems that all the respondents are disagreeing with your views or you are misunderstood or in the manner you are explaining them. My advice is to listen to the majority view here, take a lesson from it, improve your thought process, don’t take it personally and move on. I’m sure you are wonderful person who has a lot to contribute to this society.

  23. Adnan (unregistered) on July 24th, 2006 @ 9:50 am

    AoA Habib Sahib!

I never expected others have to agree with me neither i want to.For many readers(both muslims/non-muslims) of my blog,I am an “unwanted” person but who cares?we cant hide facts, can we?

But I really despise that a particular community is targeted by our own people.Sometimes they curse to mullahs, sometimes men are curses and somtimes women are cursed.

If you read me,i condemned that man first then i did add my words that burning of women in our society is not 100% a man’s mistake.

1)Does it not happen that a woman(mother) keeps forcing his son to divoirce his wife and show dreams of some other “chand se bahu”.

2)doesn’t a woman(the bahu) forces his husband to kick saas out because shes being a sign of “shame” infront of her modern friends?

3)does it not a woman who keeps coming to man for any reason even she knows that hes a married with a woman and have kids?

4)doesnt a man fill with haterd by both parties(saas and bahu) whe he comes back from office after spending 10/12 hours?

If you deny it then i am sorry my friend you dont belong to our society. No doubt a man has to take decision in the end but he cant be blamed 100% for any such activity in presence of a ‘mother’ and a ‘wife’?If targeting men all the time can solve such issues then i would encourage all men to get ready for cursing. But in reality its not gonna solve problem.

    just my PKR 2.00

  24. podracer (unregistered) on July 24th, 2006 @ 12:28 pm

Adnan: All I can say is, two wrongs do not make a right. This incident is unfortunate, and no justification can be given for it. It is the highest form of cruelty one can imagine. Think about it… being burned “alive”. It sounds so horrible!

As a human being one should know how to control oneself. Otherwise there is no difference between man and animal. Whatever social factors led him to do what he did certainly do matter here, but do not form a means of justification for this brutal act.

Btw, the four points that you mentioned are also important and should be discussed as separate topics. They are unfortunate evils of the society that we live in.

  25. Adnan (unregistered) on July 24th, 2006 @ 12:57 pm

dear pod:I agree with you 100% and I never disagree that tha “man” shouldnt be punished.I will go one step further that such crimnals should be punished in public place so that others can learn lessons.I dont know why people thinking that I am backingup the guy because He’s the man. *confused*.All I appeal others not to target entire community. We have got habbits to attack on entire molvi/ulema community and others. Its a had habbit and I don’t follow it.This hypocricy will screw us one day.

BTW,i visited your blog.I didnt know ubuntu had so many sub flavors:).I dont have linux anymore on my Pentium 4.I often use Knoopix CD for fun only.

The act of taking others life is despicable to say the least. Its haram and against the social and legal code as well. Its the sickening mindset of ours (men) that drive us towards that.

I see more of economics invloved in such cases, which have been initially discussed in this post. I think women should not act meekly in such cases as well and should respond positively against the whimsical accusitions aimed at them!

    1. The first murder in the world was for:

    a. Gratitude for being in a people-free world
    b. Brotherly love on sharing a piece of land
    c. Cain, a man, killing Abel, also a man, over a woman; in short, Cain was ENVIOUS

    2. Which of the following is true?

    A. Men are never jealous of men, oh my gawd how come!, so there was never never any fued among men over sissy things like jealousy
    B. Men regularly kill men for women, land, power, ego and other trivial matters that spark envy

Answer the two questions, Mr. Universe.
