Donkey Cart Race 2006 Coverage

Babar Haroon Manghi has captured some coverage of the Donkey Cart Race 2006 and uploaded them on Flickr. I thought it would be worth a look! It seems like the event was a success, though i cannot find any followup news till now.

There are 6 pictures in total including the one above. Click here to check them out.

Secure enough?

I sometimes get amazed at the sheer amount of ‘official’ security forces we have operating in Karachi. Just to recount,

  • Capital City Police
  • Madadgar 15
  • Labaik Force (Police Elite Commandos)
  • Rangers
  • Traffic Police
  • Excise Police
  • Customs Police
  • Pakistan Army (on occasion)
  • Military Police (Army)
  • Air Police (Air Force)
  • Naval Police (Navy)

and im pretty sure im leaving out quite many..

The funny thing is….. even after so many of them….. we’re not safe!?

Pedestrians are an afterthought

Driving through the Thursday evening rush at Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s mazar, I noticed pedestrians struggling to climb over the divider on the road and stumbling into the path of cars. The reason is that the divider is built in a patently pedestrian unfriendly way: it’s a couple of feet high, with sharply sloping sides and only the width of a brick to stand on in the centre.

I think the reason it was built this way was to prevent drug addicts and the homeless from sleeping there, but the cure is worse than the disease: pedestrians crossing the road have to balance precariously on the divider while cars whiz by. I once foolishly decided to cross the road on foot and nearly slipped off the divider myself.

Who are the designers responsible for this madness? How does the process work? If anyone knows, please, share the information here. Else I will add it to my list of things to find out, and will post my findings.

Lady rider

http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/images/2006/07/Copy%201%20of%20Picture%282%29-thumb.jpg
This bike is being ridden by a lady. She has a kid in front, a kid and a girl behind. Some nerves, I must say. Not to mention it’s SF she is travelling through, turning all the heads. Brownie points for doing it in the rain.

Rain at last

I have heard its raining heavily in Defence. I am on the University Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and theres no sign of rain in here.. Its not fair :(

Security

When all the security in town is gathered at one place to protect just one person, wouldn’t it be easier for criminals to pull their stunts in other parts of the city? Are all the citizens responsible for their own security? Seems like they always have been.

Sorry no pictures. Taking pictures of a huge security force didn’t seem like a fun idea to me.

Car-achi #10

When most people are going for sleeker, smarter and newer cars, some still prefer old style luxury and class! Thats what this vintage Jaguar is all about. A 1987 JAGUAR Sovereign V12 TWR!

carachi10.jpg

Interestingly.. i wonder what sort of mileage this car would give!? This is the closest description i could find over the net. It has a 5.3 L engine~!! now thats a gas guzzler!

schumacher-ing in karachi

who cares if raikonnen and schumacher never come to our city? we have our own racing scene, right? and underground is almost more thrilling (if thats possible) than formula one. but when we talk about the real desi racing scene, lets talk about the real desi racing scene.

today karachi will proudly host the chief secretary cup. a donkey cart race from kothari parade to governor house. apparently the idea is to promote sports “which represent the vibrancy of sindh”. a xenophobic approach to curtailing activities foreign to our own. don’t get me wrong. i have no issues with this race. they can race penguins on sharae faisal for all the difference it makes to me. at least it gives people something to do. but they have to get the reasons right. “the government wants to re-establish the tradition of donkey cart race as people are preferring foreign sports over their own and this race is one of the identities of the province and city and the public should be involved in it.” the words in bold strike me as a bit ridiculous. the government can’t tell me which sport i should be involved in.

but anyways the race is on. anyone with a high class state of the art donkey cart can take part. read more. and if someone just happens to be there at the right time and can take a pic or two, please post them here. for now, i better go call my bookie…

A splash of color?

The new management of Habib Bank Ltd. has decided to give the monument which has described karachi for so many decades…. a splash of color! Who can forget the image of this building, lighted up from the ground by flood lights with the red (and later, green) ring at the top, whenever there was a national, religious or other event?! Well.. now we can replace that image with this new one! I caught this while driving back home one day.. i think they were testing the lights or something.

The colors are white, orange, red, pink, purple and blue. There was a green and yellow in there somewhere too which i missed. What do you think? Looks nice? Looks ugly?
