Underpass Anniversary

Today, marks the first anniversary of the Clifton Underpass, built by the KPT under the Tameer-i-Karachi program. Our very own Teeth Maestro was the first one to cover it and drive through it at around midnight.

Over the past one year, we here at KMB, have written a lot about its project. From the moment it began, there have been dedicated over 139 posts on this subject, covering a lot of aspects of it, from the ornaments on top of it to its drainage system. Most of them, came when the 2 hour torrential rain hit karachi and literally sank karachi, the underpass was completely flooded and unpassable sparking a round of SMS’s promoting Karachi’s biggest pool party karachi’s newest dolphin park. The KPT claimed that it was working perfectly under the conditions it was built for, but the conditions at those times were anything but normal, while at the same time, naysayers were blasting the KPT for mismanged funds and wastage of resources. Nandos, ever since the construction began, has been using the underpass as the butt of all its ‘why did/nt the chicken cross the road’ jokes.

Another aspect of the underpass becoming operational was the change in routes we had to take while crossing from one quadrant of the previous schon circle to the other. Suddently, moving around in a car is no longer feasible, and walking on foot is a much better proposition.

One of our readers Jawaid Bachani suggested that now that the underpass is past its first year, lets talk about how its benefited our lives (or not). So lets get the discussion rolling..

@ Salman: I think its a safe bet to add six months to a whole year to the opening date that any CDGK person gives for completion of a project. Just like its a safe bet to arrive at shaadis at 12:00 am if the invitation says 10:00

Also, commenting on the Underpass, I just saw the picture by Mansoor earlier in another post today, and I was noticing… the landscape near the underpass looks like its some colony on Mars or something! you dont see a single tree or green shrub nearby! Did the KPT not think of beautifying it with greenery after construction? Are there no trees left in the city to plant near that intersection so it doesnt look like it exists on Mars? or do we just dont like trees that no shop owner around the area could plant some shrubbery just for the sake of eliminating the barrenness?

    Greenry ?? What greenry.

this city Govt is enenmy to greenry. they have chopped all old trees in the name of public service on Shahrae quaideen. Shahrae jahangir (in north nazimabad) 70+ year old banyan tree on main MA Jinnah road at plaza crossing. and they are after the green belt on university road from jail round about upto hasan square.

the centre green belt in north nazimabad underneath that belt is 72 inches main water feeder connecting new karachi, orangi, gulshan from board office upto sakhi hasan chowrangi is alloted to CDGK WELL WISHERs who stole water from kunda system motor and pay only petty amount of TOWN Tax under licence of nurseries. Public property trees are chooped quietly and space is made to accomodate 25 nurseries in 5 km length of green belt.
