Online Newspaper browsing

We, the expats, sometimes really wish to get the perspective of the Pakistani newspapers on the news highlighted through our local newspapers. In the absence of availablity of our newspapers abroad, the net seems to be the only solution.

The leading newspapers of Karachi / Pakistan have websites to browse with the newspapers online.

I wanted to browse through the classified supplement of sunday’s Dawn today but unfortunately, the dawn website doesnot offer the facility. Even though the complete newspaper is available online, apparently the classified section is not included.

Does anyone know of any online resource to view the Dawn Classifieds? Dawn offers 2 websites but none offer classifieds:

http://www.epaper.dawn.com

A few months back Dawn did toy with the idea of having the classified section online found at dawnclassified.com but it seems to have gotten no where as its now offically closed.

    DAWN
Absolutely no comparison in quality and credibility. The best paper that you can find & compare internationaly. Their hardwork is quite obvious once you get a copy, specially on Sunay’s.

    THE NEWS
A good match to DAWN though not equal. Good name and reputation. Widely circulated and read along with DAWN & The nation.

    THE NATION
Another good news paper who is trying hard to catch up with DAWN and NATION but yet miles to go. Has improved a lot. Simple and effective way of putting the news on paper. Decent website.

    JANG
The most famous urdu newspaper with some great columnists like Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami & Javaid Chaudhry ( I am not so sure if he is still with JANG)As good name among urdu news papers. Although over the internet it has some technical difficulties but it has done very well in catching up with other english newspapers.

    UMMAT
Although not as good credible as others but their research and investigative reporting are something really missing in other newspapers. You will find the side of story that is not found anywhere with some credible info. This newspaper also has some biased perspective in some areas.

Dawn managed online classified section for some time but it seems that now its only for the advertisers. Also, I feel the most of online newspapers are not very much tech savvy, jang still publishing images etc. There are couple of exceptions though, Paktribune.com and Dailytimes.com.pk – later being the first to introduce RSS feeds of the news, i think.

Also Jang offers an extensive archive that goes back years. It is very useful for Urdu-enabled researchers: the site can be searched in Urdu, Nastaliq.

The Jang magazines have improved tremendously recently; their research reports have a great value. I have often suggested to the management to especially promote this feature to university-level research scholars and professors.

URDU-ENABLED…LOL…My urdu is disabled how do I get it enabled RAMLA JEE?

  9. Kar-Achi Battian (unregistered) on October 5th, 2006 @ 2:31 am

BAB-E-URDU, Akhir rehe na Urdu-Medium kay Urdu-Medium. I think RAMLA JEE meant URDU-Enabled browser, where you can type Urdu in the Search Field.

Although, I looked for the Search field on Jang site but couldn’t spot it.

Ramlaa , I am not sure what are you talking about. Jang Magazines ?? Last time I saw their sunday magazine few years ago, they were filled with ads of Hakeem Sahibs , Kalay baba lasbela walay , palmist etc. It was so weird to see those ads in family newspaper. Jang is crap and they would publish any ad for money. Is sunday magazine is still same or have they changed their policy over years.

  13. Salman (unregistered) on October 5th, 2006 @ 8:16 am

Although this is not relevant but why dont you people start posts about saloons in Karachi,I think this topic is never discussed on KMB.

  14. Kashif (unregistered) on October 5th, 2006 @ 9:34 am

Jang sunday magazine is filth covered. Last pages usually have hakeem, contraceptive and shed-200- pounds-in-weeek type ads. Same as they show ‘Excite’ ad on geo during 9pm news.

I dont understand one thing: Why cant Urdu papers have neat formating like the English newspapers? Whenever you pick up an Urdu newspaper, like Jang, Awam, etc, you feel like somebody spilled paint all over them in a hurry or like somebody was drunk or intoxicated when he put up all the news in the form of a paper. It always looks so untidy and messed up!

Why cant Urdu newspapers improve their formatting and make them more professional looking like the english newspapers?

@shlazz: Sorry Shlazz but I tried and couldnt find the link. I went to back issues and selected the 1st october (sunday) issue but there is no such link there.

Baba-e-Urdu: You need a taaweez for that.

I did invent this neoism “Urdu-enabled.” I thought “Urdu-speaking” has come to denote ethnicity. “People who understand and communicate in Urdu” was too long… but in my fate, I always have to go back and take the longer route! Sigh!

Captain: The content of the magazines has changed tremendously, I’d say in the past 1-2 years. Some reverse feedback from Geo seems to be working for Jang.

The ads are still there, but otherwise the content has improved in terms of coverage and depth of topic, extensive research, newness and above all relevance of the subject to its audience. Relevance to readers’ life is of prime importance; it’s an angle from which I critically view marketing/ media/ etc.

Each Jang Group paper/ magazine has its own editorial team, and the magazines’ team has made serious improvements. I do enjoy the travellogues by Majid Farid Saati; and the women-related sections have come a long way since the copy/paste/translation-from-foriegn-magazines days. the layout is better, the photos and articles are original, and the content is culturally and time-relevant.

The search function seems to be off… the Jang ebsite is terrible to navigate.

I think MB its time for you grow up – this recent incident is again in line with your idiotic Dr. Essa Lab blunder later on we have only seen you display a very bigoted attitude as an author and commenter on KMB – I think its time that he should be shown the exit door out of this blog. There are many other far more capable and responsible people ready to take his place.

Any idiot except you can understand that inserting FIVE hyperlinks in any comment will LAND you in the comment moderation list. Check the comment moderation queue before accusing the author for censoring.

Next time maybe before using your thick empty head check your facts – (oh I’m sorry you don’t know how to do that – prime example Dr. Essa Lab blunder which will go down in the KMB hall of shame)

BTW whats your blog address you don’t display it anywhere, I think its a prerequisite to have a blog address – now confess up and let us all see if you are such an idiot also on your own blog

I PROPOSE LETS THROW MB OUT – seconders?

  28. MB (unregistered) on October 6th, 2006 @ 2:39 am

@REGULAR KMB : I have my full sympathy with you dear, since you dont know the whole story and wasted your time to write it all.

@MUFTA : Whats the name ?. any Other info about DAWN’s new channel ?

  29. Teeth Maestro (unregistered) on October 6th, 2006 @ 1:06 pm

    Dawn news channel YEP confirmed.

I know that these days they are in an aggressive hiring mode riping people off other channels and enticing them in ;) the usual practice. I might have an inside scoop soon but will have to investigate further before we spill the beans.
