More ideas on IDEAS 2006

I know there’s been some posts on this, but here is some more detailed information concerning the security situation and inconveniences across the city. Don’t we just love it when Karachi is in the spotlight?

A major Defence Exhibition, IDEAS 2006, opens at the Karachi Expo Centre, from Sun, 19 to Sat 25 Nov 06. This exhibition which would be launched by the President of Pakistan is likely to attract several foreign dignitaries including PM Tony Blair of UK, Pres Hu of China and an array of international media.

It is in the light of this that security would be heightened at several sensitive locations such as the Expo Centre, hotels, the airport, railway stations, government buildings, multi-national corporations, Shara-el-Faisal and communication centres. Expect police in all localities all over the city.

In view of the above, all are to tune up their minds for a number of inconveniences.
√ò Delays at the airport and intensive security process at hotels should be anticipated.
√ò Hotel rooms may not be easily available .
√ò Stringent traffic regulations including diversions would be a common feature; the nerve centre being the general area of PIDC Chowk along Sharah-el-Faisal, to the Expo Centre, the University Road and the arteries off Hassan Square- Dalmia- Rashid Minhas Road .
√ò Principal VIP movement will be from 9-10 AM and 5- 6 PM. Offices may, as a result, want to factor this into your movement plans. Two possible options for commuting can be:
– M A Jinnah Road to Numaish Chowk- onwards to either New Town or Teen Hatti and then further on towards North.
– Keamari and then through DHA along Kh-i- Ittehad to Hino Chowk- Baloch Bypass and then either down on Sherah- el- Faisal through or onwards to Bahadurabad and beyond, or to Jail Chowrangi and then University Road.

NeoKa, Just wondering but are you a canadian version of George Fulton who then married the producer of the program?

From the traffic plans it seems that half of the city would be affected by the ‘vip’ movement. It’s better if govt declare holidays during the expo so that the vips roam around without fear of getting a bite from bloody civilians. How on earth pillion riding stop crime? How about 3-4 guys in a car? better ban that too.

It would be much better for the public if government pursue health, education and poverty alleviation related projects with some of the zeal and vigor which it is expressing in the projection of ‘weapons of mass destruction’.

    @ Neoka,

You sure Tony Blair and Hu are coming for the Expo. What are they going to do their buy weapons for their countries? Sounds a bit odd.

looks like every one here seems to be insisting on pictures.. lemme post my comment that i made earlier on a similar post about IDEAS2006

“well be careful while taking pictures coz all the military hardware involved, army highups are paranoid at the moment, u could end up in a army lockup and tried for spying, espionage and can end up being court martialed too.. (civilian court-martial i.e.) YES they can lock you up(civilians) in a military detention facility and try you in military courts…

be careful even talking anything anti government/army/mush on cell phone or land lines too otherwise you could have similar fate that this poor colonel had

    @ Adnan: LMAO!

@ Neoka: aww, why did all those dignitaries have to come when Karachi is still half dug up? even around that area! btw, are you sure they are expected to visit? I think its very unlikely.

Hello All! I would like to clarify a little about the idea of expos like IDEAS200X. Being a frequent of such expos, and also participating in a number of them, i would like to add, that this expo is promoted as an international expo. For example if Hu Jinto, or Tony Blair or some international business tycons will come here, they will not come here wit the sole purpose of buying weapon made in WAH (Actually, i will not be surprized if they did, some low-tech weaponary purchase from here might be attractive for those countries also). They will come, first as they are on an official visit to Pakistan anyway… second there are british and chinese companies there “SELLING” also. Its also a myth that all the buying and selling will involove Pakistan in it, no, international expos dont work like this. During the expo , dont be surprized ,if the chief of saudi army, takes interest in some systems displayed by turikish arms industry. Its an international business event, and Pakistan is host.We shall hope that this becomes a regional defense event, the way government wishes it to be. Karachities will get a lot from it.

on my way to office this morning, i was very surprised to see the buses staying in the bus lanes on Shara-e-Faisal. infact i was astonished to see the bus-train. no driver was looking to overtake the preceeding bus. they all were driving very smoothly. that was a rare scene…thanx to IDEAS 2006.

I am sure crime rate would be down next week or so, during the ideas, cause police will be busy in vvip escort.

Lets just prepare for the worst and hope for the best, instead of doing it backwards.
We need more events like this, but we could actually do without more defeatism.

today i was stuck in one of the worst traffic jams i have witnessed, was stuck on jinnah bridge(KPT) at around 12:15pm and until 4:15 pm and hardly managed to cover 2 km and guess what , luckily out of nowhere sirens started ringing.. No it was’nt an ambulance stuck in jam, actually it was some senior official of Navy/kpt with a motorcade of around 9 vehicles 3 limos and 6 security escort vehicles carry gun touting NP(Navy police) personels , they were also stuck in the mayhem, then all of a sudden around 6 of the gun touting NP personnel jumped out of the jeep and on foot ran towards the starting of the intersection where the tarrafic police sergeant was helplessly trying to manage the traffic , he was supposedly asked to stop all traffic comming from other lanes so that the motorcade could pass.. even then we were stuck good 15 mins before our lane started to move and we managed to get out of the mess…. dunno what happened to other people stuck in other lanes i guess we were just lucky that some VVIP was also stuck on our tail which made our passage easy after awful 4 hours, MA jinnah road was also a mess .
    Honestly speaking saturdays are relatively
calmer in terms of tarrafic but i guess it was coz of roads being block thanx to this Arms expo that we have to bear this mess..

Thanks for the info. There does however seem to be some conflict about the dates of the event. You’ve written Sun, 19 to Sat 25 Nov 06. The EPB website says 21 – 24 Nov.
