Schawlaf Invites You To Eat Nihari On A Saturday Morning

Enjoy the video Schawlaf made while driving from Tariq Road to Burns road to get some Nihari for himself on a Saturday morning. He ordered Nihari with with 4 Bowng Ki Boti + Nihari + Maghaz + Sheermaal + Khameeri Roti. Thats as grand as you can get with Nihari. I can well imagine how good a treat it must have been & who says our city is not beautiful? Who says theres no good side to our city? I have driven the same route a million times only I used to be take Shahrae Faisal from Driggh Road. So, it was great watching the video.

Nihari with Sheermaal/Taftaan, is one of my favorite things to eat. You know I believe that Nihari should be expensive because of the awesome taste it has. I mean I fail to understand how it is so cheap. The combination might be heavy (sheermaal with Nihari) but it doesnt do anything to us. We are used to of eating such food.

Schawlaf, thanks for sharing it dude :)
Note: Karachiwalas, take your cameras out. make videos of karachi, post em online and show the world that we are not the fanatics that we are projected to be on the television. Take pictures of it, put em on flickr, I mean a city with such a huge population has less than 10,000 pictures on flickr. Come ON, WAKE UP.

The video was made to be part of my blog where i usually write about my phone and sometimes about other things happening in my life .

Xia: Bownng, how can I miss that. Sorry for the mistake.

Mariam, I think his memory ran out.. Honestly, nihari dont look tasty by its ‘looks’… but once you have one niwala of it with fresh baked Nan, Sheermaal, or Taaftan then you just forget about what it looks like and have a go with it. lol

sorry for the nihatti description guys. :D

Schawlaf, as they say beauty in the eye of the beholder.

Well done Schawlaf. I think those who have cams/mobile cams and feel comfortable to make videos MUST try to shoot different areas of karachi and upload on sites like youtube, metcafe etc. Sometimes video blogging leaves more good impression than writing words. Once again, good work Schawlaf and hope to see more videos in future.

I never tried nihari early in the morning. Is it good for health to eat a dish like Nihari in breakfast? Just wondering…

  10. Mona (unregistered) on November 19th, 2006 @ 9:59 am

    Hey! Great work =)

Goooood to see Karachi after FIVE years!! Can’t wait to be there… wooohoo!

  11. Mona (unregistered) on November 19th, 2006 @ 10:00 am

P.S. would lurrrrv to eat all the nice HALAL food… too bad people who go from overseas tend to get sick =(

  12. Sufi (unregistered) on November 19th, 2006 @ 10:02 am

Schawlaf, you had some fun yesterday with the food lol.

Adnan, I agree with you on the making videos & sharing part. But dont worry too much abt ‘health’. Its once in a week thing.

  13. Sufi (unregistered) on November 19th, 2006 @ 10:05 am

Mona, if you mean people who come from abroad to Pakistan get sick because of the food, then I would disagree with you. I have seen people coming for the first time and they are perfectly fine. Just get bottled water, (most probably dubai imported Musafa) and stay away from not-so-popular-ban-kebabs.

ABCD stomach is not meant for Burns Road food , a friend of mine came from LA after 6 years took him to Burns ROad had Seekh Kabab Paratha , Matke ke Dahi bare , doodh pati chaye next day the poor guy was puking his guts out while the rest of us were planning another trip .
I agree with Sufi Nehari with all the Maghaz and Nali will not appeal asthetically but it takes one niwala to get hooked
About having fun with food , today you will find me at Sheraton Brunch after Zuhur

I have also posted a second video only 6 sec about from they get Maghaz and a little snap of Nalee ki dish

  15. Farhan aka Schawlaf (unregistered) on November 19th, 2006 @ 10:37 am

For Maghaz and Nali snaps only 6 sec

    Hey Thanks Sufi!

Well… yeah my understanding has been that you definately get sick when you go back – but hey I would love to be all fine and enjoy my break there :).

About water, thanks for the advise, I’d check it out- what about Nestle’s mineral water? been told by fair few people that it is good? What do you reckon?

God willing, the holiday goes fine… with the whole Dengue scare too!

Nice pickup BTW is it a Hilux or Prado?

    It’s a Prado

Video was good but I guess you can’t seem to drive in one lane at a time :-). That bus driver dropped the passengers in the most right lane. (So risky even if light is red). Then the cook put specially some oil in your Nihari; wow , that is some thing. And then the last last scene of road with crows made it all good nihari.

Any thing aside, I appreciate your passion for food that can make you drive from one corner of city to other. I can’t ever do that.

Vdu was good effort,I enjoyed it.

Captain if you live in karachi , you can see that on most roades lanes are not marked , it was 7 am , nobody cares even if i drive on the wrong side of the road , the bus wala didn’t dropped the passengers and they never do , passengers themselves leave or hurl themselves out whereever they want , that oil is ghee ka tarka and without this tarka nehari is just another curry , those crows poor things are waiting for the shops to open so they can have some breakfast btw thanks for liking my video

  21. SWA (unregistered) on November 19th, 2006 @ 10:45 pm

Great video! however, I also noticed all that Captain’s Log wrote about.

  22. Sufi (unregistered) on November 20th, 2006 @ 12:25 am

Mona, Nestle is alright. But some of my mates had issues with it and they were all good with Musafa. Dont worry about Dengue, you know it exists even in the US. People dont stop coming here. Also remember, if someones attacked by dengue and taken good care of, their mortality rate is really really low. Anyways, good luck with that.

Captain, even though Farhan has pretty much answered you, I would like to add that I havent seen people driving in a lane at 7 am in the morning on a weekend day anywhere in the world, not even in the US or England. I drive very sanely most of the time, but you dont know what its like to have empty roads in Karachi and whenever I find em empty, I make use of that. That bus driver did not drop them on the signal, it was the passengers who thought that they would get off if the bus stopped at the signals. I mean thats the way it happens. If I really want to get off at the side of the road, I would have waited for the signal to go red and then asked them to stop and I think they would then stop the bus on the side of the road. It is dangerous to stop in a right lane, I agree, but like with many other things, Karachhites have evolved and the drivers know consciously or unconsciously, that anyone could come out of the car. I always consider that if theres a bus in the right lane, and I also consider an oncoming car if I am getting out of the bus. That oil as Farhan said is Tarrka and without it Nihari is no fun. But if you dont want to eat that, you can ask the guy not to put it in your nihari. Simple. It is our choice to get extra cheese or no cheese in our burgers. Have it the way you want it.

I dont know why people just keep on comparing Karachi with other ‘civilised’ places. It looks like you do not believe in individuality. Every city has its own speciality, its own charm. You cannot go to Venice and complain oh there are no roads here. Similarly, someone coming from Florida to visit London might complain about the narrow roads. But we should realise that every city has its own unique attributes. Venice wouldnt be Venice if major means of travelling were roads and London wouldnt be london if they had broad roads etc. It would be extremely boring if all cities looked and felt the same.

  23. Captain's Log (unregistered) on November 20th, 2006 @ 3:47 am

Sufi, I was not comparing Khi with any other city. I just put my observations. Do not need to get any senti :-). Not sure where have you seen people driving in two lanes at 7 am in US as habit.

  24. Sufi (unregistered) on November 20th, 2006 @ 4:21 am

No offense to you captain, but do visit utah. lol

  25. Captain's Log (unregistered) on November 20th, 2006 @ 5:14 am

I was in Salt Lake City couple of years ago and I did not find any such driving. But if you are comparing some remote town then that is different case. One or two cases you may even find in San Francisco (where I do live) but generally people do not drive like that. Once again, let me clear that I am not comparing Khi with US. End of thread.

neways good video indeed…I tried to make one on my last trip but I was mobbed by bunch of Anti-American juloos attendees infront of Capri cinema and my belongings were snatched including my digital camera….such a beautiful city of mine.
