Kara film festival

It’s almost here – the event that makes Karachi proud and is the perfect antidote to the odious IDEAS, the Kara film festival. This year will mark the sixth edition of the festival and it seems to have gained traction in the region. If anyone has any tips on which movies to look out for, post them here. The organisers are planning on screening the bulk of the movies in the day, so tips will help everyone with a day job.

New in Town: The CNG Rickshaw.

Spotted at the Iqra University Gulshan-e-Iqbal campus, this CNG rickshaw may not look very different but it really stands out for being super quiet. Manufactured locally and costing around 1,45,000/-, this new alternative is soon to replace the noisy ones from the streets of Karachi for ever.

Mehrullah – KO forever

meher.JPG

After Shoaib & Asif episode Pakistan faced another blow in sports when Mehrulla & Faisal Karim tested positive for cannabis following the South Asian Games in Colombo this August and have now been banned. Further more both Mehrullah and Faisal would never be allowed to represent the country in any international match. “Mehrullah and Faisal will never represent Pakistan again, they have been handed a life ban,” Secretary PBF Shakeel Durrani said, adding, “We have zero tolerance for doping.” They were recently banned for six months by the South Asian Games committee.

Both the boxers won gold medals at this summer’s South Asian Games in the Sri Lankan capital. The Karachi-based Mehrullah is a reigning Asian Games champion and would have been among the front-runners for the featherweight gold in the 2006 edition of the Games to be held in Doha next month.

Pakistan boxing scene had started to pick up tempo after much famous Hussain Shah’s victory many years back. Hussain Shah won the bronze medal in the Middleweight division at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. The only two names apart from Joe Frazier that were in my mind ever then were M. Ali, the KING and Hussain Shah at that time.

With all the good prayers that we have for our sports men, we should admit that justice, at any cost must be prevailed. We never liked what happened with Shoaib & Asif but also never liked their own part they played. After a long pause we finally had few men to dream a medal in boxing but it seems Mehrullah would soon be history. Why o why they do it. This BBC title says it all. “KO for Pakistan Olympic dreams “. Let’s hope and pray other players will work hard to fill the vacuum.

slap and grab

Heard this story through a friend, thought i should share.

A girl is standing at a bus stop, waiting to catch a bus to go home and talking on her cellphone. There are quite many people around and its daytime.

Two guys on a bike pull up in front of her, the guy on the back gets off the bike, comes in front of her, and without warning, plants a loud slap right on her face! The girl is stunned, cant even utter a word. He then shouts (for the benefit of whoever is listening) “kitney dafa bola hai! Abba ka cellphone nahi lay kar nikla karo” (how many times have i told you, not to take dads cellphone out), grabs her cell, gets back on the bike, and they both drive away.

The girl is too shocked to say anything and just stands there, her hand holding an imaginary cellphone to her ear. People around ignore the situtation thinking its just some family tiff or the other…. till she screams out “ye mera bhai nahi tha!!!!!!!” (he was not my brother!!!!!)

By then its too late to do anything. Another cellphone lost, another victim scarred for life. Sadly, this is not the first slap and grab cellphone snatching i’ve heard of, especially with females in the city, and it definately wont be the last. Its incidents like these that i support the ban on pillion riding to some extent.

Gift 7: Pakola Ice Cream Soda

“In the spirit of all the holiday gift giving that will be taking place over the next couple of months, all the Metroblogging cities are giving 7 gifts to the world throughout the week of NOV 26th – DEC 2. This is Karachi’s 7th Gift to the World.”

If there is one soft drink that started from Karachi and spread not only in Pakistan but all over the world, it’s got to be Pakola. I would rather call it KaraCola and it would taste just as great, but just thinking about Pakola brings that sweet taste into the mouth that you just want to leave everything else and have some Pakola.
