Go Out, Get Clicking
Guys, just a small request for all the readers based in Karachi.
Please Get out and START CLICKING. A city with a population of 12+ Millions (estimating) has less than 10,000 Pictures on flickr. Thats a shame, a disgrace for our city. :( No wonder we are stereotyped as fanatics and radicals in the global media. Show the world what we are really like. Please.
For the record:
We found 1,598,237 photos about London.
We found 462,826 photos about New and York and City.
We found 1,138,794 photos about Paris.
We found 67,618 photos about Dubai.
We found 45,448 photos about Mumbai.
We found 11,721 photos about Tehran.
“We found 1,598,237 photos about London”
Wow love my city. May its pictures keep piling up.
well actually there are many other karachi specific pics on flickr but the users don’t tag them properly… maybe lazy users are to be blamed…
Go Out, Get clicking and eventually Get Snatched/Robbed
I think comparing population with number of pics is absolutely wrong.
It would be better if you compare the INTERNET users with the number of pics. That’s going to give us the ratio which is more meaningful.
i agree with MB, and by the way, i thought the population of karachi was 14-16 milion?? not 12…
I bet 25% of those 10000 pictures are not related to karachi at all. We could use some good pictures but what i find disliking is that when i search for karachi or lahore, i get someone’s dog’s tail or their underwear or some personal photography of family. People dont know how to tag properly. Like even the karachi met blog flikr group, look on the sidebar, half those pics dont belong to karachi city. They come under personal photography.
mb & zahra, this is not a debate or an argument. Karachi has a lot less pictures than it deserves. And yes, we the karachiwalas are to be blamed. We should put more pictures of Karachi.. This post is not about a competition between Karachi & London etc.. nor does it show any strong measures.. This post just wanted to request all my Karachi-wala brothers & sisters to be a bit more active. Theres no harm in it. You guys are so distracted :/
sa’ad, i second that.
@sufi: there was no offence intended there, since you mentioned no. of karachi pics and nos. of pics for other cities, it seemed like a comparison was going on…
anyway, yes i agree with you in that we need more, at least semi-decent images of karachi on the internet -cos most of the current ones, like sa’ad said are just pure nonsense- very telling of the non-existant tagging skills…
its a city of 15+ million……. lets not undermine the city…….
we dont want to loose our cameras!!!
@Sufi. I was just wondering what the number of pictures on flickr has to do with us karachi wala’s being “stereotyped as fanatics and radicals in the global media.” So if I follow this logic then the more pictures a person or country has on flickr or internet makes them less of a fanatic or radical??? Interesting logic my friend.
zarish
clearly you have not read the fundo manifesto. Page one says it is forbidden to take pics and upload them onto the internet:)
Actually Sufi’s point is valid. There is only one subgroup in pakistan (fundo) that gets any media time or international promotion.
A million nonviolent pictures of karachi where women are not bruised up and churches are not burning and will not change that 100% but its start.
Comparison with other Pakistani cities;
We found 9,857 photos about lahore.
We found 5,306 photos about islamabad.
We found 9,465 photos about karachi.
Lahore is slightly ahead despite around half the population. Islamabad for its much lower population is doing much better too.
Hey karachi lets not become the fanatics and radicals just to win the number game of the global media war…we should focus on the quality of the flickrs and not the quantity….i have seen so many from all over and they are not good at all…most of them are a disgrace to their respective cities/countries….and a lot are almost short of a bath-robe….lol..

Mr Nutwarlal?
There are lot of factors here, a huge population is no deal.
1. No of PC Users/Owners in the City
2. No of Internet Users in the City
3. No of “Digital Camera” Owners in the City
4. No of (3) who are also (1) and (2)
5. No of (4) who like to share
I bet (4) is very small here and then (5) is small too.
What a useless discussion :)
Abdul Sami has understood the point i was refering to initially.
But Sami, provided that we dont have a proper concensus on Karachi population ( forget what happened in 1998, we know the figures were manipulated), how on earth we ever be able to correctly find out the variables that you mentioned. Yes, we can have a rough figure.

Feel free to comment !!!
when did ‘not’ having most pictures at an online photo album become disgraceful or makes us fanatics….
khurram: i second that question… anyone?
“when did ‘not’ having most pictures at an online photo album become disgraceful or makes us fanatics….”
Never. Lets work on some good quality pictures nevertheless.
If Lahore & Isloo can do it so too can Karachi. :)
1. No of PC Users/Owners in the City: Are you kidding me? After the imports of used personal computers, I dont think anyone that I know of does not have a computer at their home. And trust me I know a lot of poor people. Everyone has a computer today.
2. No of Internet Users in the City: Cable Internet has been a booming business for a while (actually going down now), and because of the cable internet, I dont think there are many people who have a computer and do not have a cable internet connection.
3. No of “Digital Camera” Owners: I agree that the number of people with digital cameras is low, but I see a lot of people buying new digital (chinese made) cameras every now & then. Besides, we are one of the craziest cell phone loving cities in the world, and almost everyone that I know of has a good decent camera phone. The point of surprise for me was when the maid at my house flashed her Sony Ericson K750i and that was last year.. lol
5. No of (4) who like to share: Thats where this post comes in, start sharing.
Khurram: Disgraceful, ok maybe not really. But its a fact that we have been slow to portray ourselves as happy fun-loving people in the world, and that we should show the world that no we are all not fanatics, and warriors, and that we have a softer side as well.
A bit of an exaggeration perhaps, your statement about “shame” and “disgrace”, but it does follow in the grand desi tradition of melodrama. I fail to see the connection between a lack of pictures and being stereotyped as fanatics/radicals, but if you’re implying that you’d like to see pictures of Karachi’s finest partying it up, or of the city itself, you could be more constructive about it. Perhaps you can give people an idea of what sort of pictures you think are needed, because another 50,000 traffic jam images will be fundamentally useless. We also don’t really have all that much in terms of tourist attractions or heritage sites within the city, so the population of Karachi is irrelevant; we may have a lot of people, but there aren’t many things to take pictures of.
Can we please get Sin to join the KMB team? Sin, would you? Please?
Anyone like to second my proposal?
Omar, are you listening?
