actually mona,
starbucks for e.g is not only a status symbol but also a lifestyle/political/new age religion symbol. Coffee shops all over are more than just ice cream vans.
Karachi has a million “status symbols” all of which are stupid but thankfully the stupidest – tea cup dogs still have not caught on.

Copper Kettle was the first of its kind. That was over ten years ago. I am sure the quality has gone down, because I havent heard much about it in a while. I am not sure who you have been talking to.

Coffee is not a status symbol, cafes are a place to sit and enjoy the company of your friends, because there is no other place to go. Cafes are used for the same purpose around the world. The only difference is that people in Karachi are just getting these cafes and therefore are very excited when a new one opens up. They have been around in the developed world for a long time now, so the excitement there is long gone.

Also Coffee has been around in Karachi much longer, I have been going for an Espresso at boat basin since the early 90′s.
