Should GEO TV show the video tape ?

The importance of free media is recognized all over the world especially WEST. People believe in what comes on the screen, even if it’s not the truth. Similarly media is responsible to uphold truth and perpetuate it. With the advent of internet & especially after the role Tehelka played back in 2001, media websites have achieved recognition as well, though at lower level.

If there is one thing that is lacking badly in our Media it is investigative journalism. Every channel is churning out Mushy, kursi, wardi, LFO, MMA & mix plate of politics to keep us busy and we being callous as we are don’t ask them to highlight our other major issues. Programs hosts are so incompetent, once on AAJ TV the guest had to explain in detail the basic of Hudood law to the host first before she could ask any question. The same ghisey pitay sawal are asked & homework lacks badly. You never see anything like BBC’s hard talk. Exceptions are very rare.Today in Jang there appeared a news item about tape being sent to GEO that contains video related to corruption in society (probably govt.). What that tapes has is only known to GEO but our question is why it’s taking them long to bring it to public. Does it have anything real sensitive or what? Is there anything against the Army, the practically, self appointed, unaccounted for GOD. From the outlook it seems it may well have something on police as the line “ jub qanuun ke rakhwalay hee mujrimun ki pusht-panahi kerainge…” suggests, God knows.

The good thing is GEO has been trying to contact this guy but as we know GEO is pro-govt. this may well make them less trust worthy in revelation of identity. GEO should make the video public if it serves the purpose of highlighting the issue & bringing out the corrupt to justice. But there is a slim chance they will, specially if its against govt. or CDGK. No matter how strong Musharraf shouts democracy is a far cry in Pakistan. Just opening up bunch of private channels is not freedom of speech & democracy. But if the video contains something which is against national interest, it would be better to keep it to the relevant people but actions should definitely be taken against those involved.

I don’t believe in this. GEO is sponsored by the agencies and this group has a history of blackmailing. I have hunch that either they are doing the same or they have been given tapes of some poor sods who are in bad books of the agencies.

I got you Kashif. Still Geo should air it. Everyone has a right to say about their agenda. Governments always control majority of media so Opposition and Public should also fight it via media. This is the modern world for you and me. Let the people decide what is Right and Wrong after all normal people always suffer the most consequences.

I might be wrong. But tell me if someone really
had put his/her life at risk in capturing evidences against the corrupt officials, he/she must be sensible enough to know that they won’t be aired on GEO tv. Then in the first place this person should not have sent those to GEO TV.

The other possibility as highlighted by Kashif could be true as well. “they have been given tapes of some poor sods who are in bad books of the agencies”.

Could somebody tell me what paper Geo published its ads on and on what date?

I think Geo should definitely air whatever has been given to it in the form of a documentary.

if Geo doesnt Air it that person should upload video on youtube and do some anonymous advertising on local internet forum etc

A channel cant just air every random tape someone sends it, especially when it contains sensitive information. They need some credibility to the content the broadcast.

There are other medias of sharing information as well. The person who managed to get a video by putting his life in danger can surely upload it on the internet.

BTW you said that the news item appeared in Jang; GEO is the TV Channel of the Jang group and if they wanted to keep this “stuff” private they would and could have done so.

Yes, Geo ask for that person who send the tapes, but with the presure of those people who showed in tapes, Geo firstly contact with those peoples and told them that you are in these tapes, so what should we do, they wana to search for that person, so they will give him a best lesson, that Pakistan is not like India or Geo is not like Talhaka :)

Yes this is that truth, which everybody knows . . . but remember you will not seen those tapes, until cleared by . . . “Agencies”

Geo is following Tehelkha in creating conspiracies and selling their newspaper / airtime through it.

I bet, if this video was done in India and given to Indian media, they will definitely air it…. I don’t know why we are so far behind India yet nobody wants to realize it…..wish we could get rid of our ego.

This might be just a trick from Geo TV to market and advertise its programs before air it. Every body knows Geo is pro-Govt and pro-MQM Channel having some very funny people like dr.fake (Amir liaqat with illegal degrees) to play with Islam and belief of people….So it might be another “Drama” by Geo.

  19. Sameer (unregistered) on January 13th, 2007 @ 9:43 am

Its a publicity stunt from GEO …this channel is belongs to …..ISI……. and now they are showing these tapes to attract peoples …..to promote their channel in a professional manner….
