Urmila on Karachi

“I’m no stranger to fashion shows. But this was my first fashion show outside India. We decided not to go conventional. We decided to go western and zany. I wore a crystal-studded white outfit … and the reaction was awesome. The whistles and screams are still ringing in my ears. We raised quite a lot of money for charity.”

Said Urmila after her recent catwalk appearence on Manish Malhotra’s show here in Karachi.

Good publicity never hurts anyone. With headlines like “Urmila reeling under Pakistani spell” and “Urmila elated over Pakistani reaction to ramp walk” the news is definately making waves. Urmila has been to Pakistan several times.

“Every time I go there I feel it to be an extremely heart-warming experience. The love and affection the Pakistanis shower make me wonder where the mythic enmity comes from.”

Honestly? It makes me wonder too….

Donkey carts rule :-)

The poor donkey along with the cart is “parked” in a no parking zone.

Do the “parking rules” apply to the donkey carts too?

Resolution 4: Bring Down The Crime Rate.

In the past three months 6243 mobile phones, 1,205 car and 1,467 motor bikes were either snatched or stolen, 1,838 robberies, 1,224 thefts and 646 people were killed through out the city and these figures are only those provided by the Sindh police to appear every Monday in “The News” which means the actual figures specially those of mobile snatching and thefts are much higher than declared because most of these crimes often go unreported.

Karachi ki shaadiyan-

It is way past Cinderella’s golden hour. The bride’s sharara no longer sparkles and the groom’s getting impatient.Ladies are sick of exchanging juicy morsels of gossip and children are wailing in the background. There are some husbands wondering when will the food be served. It’s two in the morning. Some Wespa owners are worried and older guests are definately annoyed.Atlast the food is served.More likely, opened for people to push their way through. There is mad chaos.People depart by two-thirty.Funnily it is not even a weekend.
We have all lived with these shaadis. We have also lived with disregard for punctuality, but the question is,till when?I really do not know when and where did we begin to slack.Fashionably late is a term that is disgusting(in desi context)-Weddings are specifically mentioned because they continue till wee hours of the morning.Other events too are devoid of respect for time.Should this stop or not.Nobody should just shutup because “this is Pakistan and that’s how it is.”Or should they?

Karachi – A latest view

http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/images/2006/12/karachi-photo-small-thumb.jpg

Specially for those Karachiites who are not in Karachi. Took this one 10 days back. The image originally is a good 4MB file with 3000+ pixel resolution. KMB didn’t allow me that much so i got its resolution & quality down by good 40 percent but still the end result wont disappoint you. Click on the image to view it with normal resolution. Click here to download it to local computer first. (Right click & click on “Save Target As” for IE & “Save Link As” for FF). By the way did anyone notice anything underneath MY BANK board at right side?. Is he really walking or what. And can you guess where i was when i took this pic. This is in line with this post basically.

Resolution 3: Commitment to complete projects

Seems like the City Govt. is really commited to completing the Karsaz Flyover. I applaud them on the effort of moving the contractors! Even though the project has gone grossly over their projected completion date (the IDEAS2006 exhibition), i see people working on it round the clock.

Be it rain, strike or sunday’s, the machines are moving and the workers are scambling about their tasks.

Lets hope the same kind of dedication is seen during the year 2007 and the mega projects around the city are, for once, completed on time.

On a side note, i also hope someone gets around to completing the small flyover on Queens Road going over the crossing to mai kolachi bypass! Another resolution for the year 2007.

Kaafi Coffee At Hot & Spicy

For those of you who haven’t tried it yet, grab your wallet and grab a delicious cold coffee from Hot & Spicy ASAP! I discovered it today only and wanted to tear my hair out for all the times I overpaid at those pseudo-trendy coffee places for substandard coffee!

It has just the right amount of froth and creaminess and deliciously melts in your mouth with every heavenly drop. What’s more, it’s only Rs. 65! Whatta steal.

Stop Thinking.. Start Moving

The latest offering from Engro Foods, the makers of Olpers Milk, who gave us “Subha bakhair zindagee”, comes Olwell calcium enriched milk. But its not the milk which has taken my attention, its the campaign surrounding it. It literally ‘forces’ you to act, forces you to do have it with catch phrases as

Start training in rhytm… so you’re unstoppable
Start moving to the beat… so you’re unstoppable and so on.

Edit: Apologies for getting the heading wrong, there are actually TWO similar slogans, and i read one of each. They are 1) Stop Thinking, Start Moving and 2) Stop Ageing Start Living.

Millenium Mall-understated?

We all thought people who live in Gulistan-e-Jauhar are devoid of taste. It’s time we think again and clear those preconceived notions.Yes you’ll see boys in tight pants and neon coloured shirts grinning ridiculously. But you’ll also see mommies with push carts and couples in love. This is what it is about.Just like other malls you can grocery shop, eat, and shop in general.Apart from KFC AND Pizza next, you have thunder pins(bowling alley) and a quiet food court.
Millenium mall is a funny name for a mall.It gives you a futuristic image-not excatly Star Trek but something along those lines. But this one certainly has an exciting facade. It is sprawling and one of the significant causes of traffic congestion along Jauher Mor.The interior reminds you of a Lahori Mall,Pace. It is confusing and you forget your way out too-only at times.
What really needs to be done-proper parking space should be allocated. So those who want to see what it’s all about,do not end up getting frustrated.
Also did I mention that it has Indulge too,and its staff will serve you better if speak in English.Whatever it is Millenium mall is here to stay-
