Sniffing glue

From Reuters

“Cheap at 50 rupees (85 cents) a tin and easier to get than illegal drugs, “Samad Bond” glue — the sniffers’ favourite brand — is flooding the streets of Karachi.

“The Pakistan Medical Association says substance abuse among street children has reached alarming levels.

“‘If more is not done soon, Pakistan is heading for a street children hooked on glue crisis on the scale of other countries like Morocco and Brazil,’ said Qaiser Sajjad, the association’s general-secretary.

“There are about 14,000 street children in Karachi and most are sniffing glue, said Aksa Zainab, a social worker who helps street kids at a drop-in centre operated by the Azad Foundation in cooperation with UNICEF.”

The article speaks for itself and is a sobering look at life on the wrong side of Karachi.

I attended this seminar by Azad Foundation (an NGO working for street children in khi)some 3-4 years back and they showed a documentary on the lives of these children. i was shocked to find how pervalent the glue sniffing is among children as young as 5 years!

Gule sniffing along with other drugs coupled with sexual abuse paints a horrible picture of the karachi street life… its all so very true…

Hi, It is getting bad in Canada too.I am hearing more and more about substance abuse on T.V by local cops.Hardly a day go by when there isnt a news about drug busts. The one which is creating a lot of havoc now a days is “Crystal Meth”.I also remember seeing a documentary by CNN as well as local Canadian channel about people using spray cans, air freshener, lighter fluid and glue to get high.Street kids, women and homeless people are the perfect candidate for those drug dealers.
