Aurora’s lecture-

Media, yes we all know about its empowerment. It works like magic, thus the American popluation actually got into believing that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. So media’s magic worked for those gullible souls. It made them docile, when it came to questioning the existence of a war.
This was a lecture conducted by Mr. Javed Jabbar, in regard with Aurora’s series of lectures and talks held at Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, since July, 2006. Media is the word these days. Yes, television channels are popping up so fast, hoardings clutter the city and change so often that just leaves you disgusted and confused at times, most telecom companies are increasing their advertising budgets and not working on their services. So what is this going to do to the new generation that has been born with this flurry of activity and various means of communication. How does media empower people? What is an average citizen to do?
World is no longer a global village. A village has one spoken language, single dialect. But a city has many. Our own city has many creative heads who can turn things around when it comes to mastering the art of communication.
What is yet to be seen is how we, the residents, respond to influx of communication. With knowledge comes responsibility, and responsibility guarantees change.
Karachi is bound to become better but who will take the initiative?

I firmly believe that more media literacy instruction can be very useful in our efforts to promote tolerance and combat violence. With the increased exposure of young people to an incredibly broad array of messages from an equally broad array of media messengers, it’s all the more important that we teach our young people how to make sense of what they’re seeing, hearing, and feeling. We need to teach them how to separate fact from fiction and fantasy. Only if we provide appropriate guidance can we expect our young people to understand that not everything on the screen has a place on the street corner or in the classroom.

Yes media could play both good and bad role. Don’t blame Americans only by ignoring your own ignorant nation. If US media is being used to make americnas believe that iraq had WMD then our local media has been working hard to give a bad name to religion and its related people. Mansoor’s recent anti-Mullah post and then comments by anti-Mullah people is the end result of how media played role to brainwash these kids and make them believed that any riot happens in Karachi is because of madarassah people[or mullahs]. Offcourse none of them including mansoor would have made any effort to find the reality though newspapers of that dates didn’t mention any such thing that those people were mullahs.Neither antimullah people were able to provide any proof to put some weight in their arguments and they started bullying ,calling names which are well known weapons of these losers.

I must appreciate Indian media[TV,film] etc who has taken some bold step to FIX their nation. The movie “Rang de Basanti” was a damn bold step. could you imagine such movie from Dictator mush’s regime? Offcourse not! how can I forget statment of Durrani, “don’t criticize Army!”. On the other hand the indian movie “Laga raho munna bhai” is the excellent example of using media to change the bad habit of a nation. I was surprised after reading that indians have started following “Gandhigeeri” and now they don’t spit on roads, give smile to each other. They sent flowers to local police stations which resulted the good relationship between awam and police.

Unlike Indians who have just a gandhi, we have two great role models in the form of our great Prophet[SAW] and Jinnah. For us the prophet[saw] is used in different parties in the name of Milad and fatiha darood and Jinnah is used on currency. The other use of Jinnah in our country is “secularism”. How unfortunate we are *sigh*

Politicians/Mullah bashing over media is not a freedom of press or media. They are just fooling our stupid awam nothing else. Even recent lame copycat attempt of GEO to provide “FACTS” by rleasing videotapes is not successful either. They worked hard to create hype but efforts went fruitless. A slave network which always followed the policy of “Obey current govt” can’t produce anything credible, sensible and honest to its viewers.

Henna, I beg to differ – the world, indeed, is a ‘Global Village’, and the common language that ‘binds’ us, (everyone) together is the ‘Language of the Media’ (read: Language of (Marketing and/or Advertising).

Nowadays, everything is being ‘branded’ through this medium in some form or the other. For example, note your own quote here: ‘thus the American population actually got into believing that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction’.

I think it wasn’t just the Americans, but the whole world, was fooled into believing that Iraq did possessed WMDs.

I think people should live in peace and harmony. All problems are created by us or other evil forces with their own objective.

you failed to mention the fact that javed jabbar was quite patronizing and cynical (a polite word for rude)with everyone over there. Aurora’s lectures and talks are quite crappy anyway and this was no exception.

If You have one clock you know what the time is. If you have two. You Dont know what the time actually is.

When freedom of press started after WWII, this was the theme to control it. I wonde how much successful they are. So much of media and can someone ask Javed Jabbar, Do we know the truth. DO everyone in this “Global Village” knows the truth?
