A Few of My Favorite Things, and Coffee

I am waiting to see how this coffeehouse delivers all the goods it promises to bring with itself. Imagine that: no blaring music, exorbitant prices and tedious comment cards. I will review The Second Floor once it formally launches, insha Allah or if no one else beats me to it.

Any ideas as to why it’s named The Second Floor? Not that any of the current coffeehouses in Karachi score high in the creativity department: not caring about how good or steaming hot a cup of coffee would be, I refuse to go to Cafe Lattetude for the utter cornball it professes through its name!

    Just called on the number spoke to The lady – she seems to be bit embarrased about the delays, attributing to the “app ko tou pata hai yahan kay halat ” but promised to inform via media / and e-mails for opening date tentatively on or before MID APRIL 2007.

    Lattetude – I like that place if only because it’s no longer the hangout of the cool and, therefore, you can always be sure to have a quiet evening there.

    On the delays to T2F’s launch:

    1. Faiz Sahab say kisee nay poochha keh aakhir inqilaab kab aae ga … to farmaayah ‘bhai, aa jaae ga … intezaar karo, abhi √ºmr hee kya hae!”

    2. Innallaha maa as Sabereen! (Qur’an)

    3. I am hopeful that the adage “Day Aayad, D√ºr√ºst Aayad” will work …

    Fatima: The Second Floor is named what it is because it is located on the second floor of a building. There is a lift! Hope to deliver on everything we promise to and if we don’t please tell us – not through a comment card ;)

    Mr. Shamsi: “The lady” was not embarrassed, merely taken aback by your tone. Things do happen in people’s lives that are beyond one’s control, ranging from people dying to suppliers not caring a damn about timely deliveries. I am giving up an established career to set this place up; I couldn’t be more anxious to get it up and running.

    Everyone: Thank you for your patience and please visit http://www.t2f.biz and sign up to be informed of when we go live.

    Ha…ha…Jamal, better be careful next time. A lot more people read these comments than you can ever imagine.

    And by the way, don’t worry, I will also keep you updated on any events relating to T2F.

    And, welcome onboard, Fatima. Good to have another ‘intelligent’ voice among us.

    @Sabeen Mahmud:

    U have my best wishes on your new venture.

    please put a location Map on your wesite so that it is easy for people to locate the place.

    only the location address is given! if it’s up and running by 1st or 2nd week of next one i will certainly give it a try as i would be in khi.

    BUT location map is important!

  10. F. AHMED (unregistered) on March 21st, 2007 @ 5:58 pm

    I meant:

    “….1st or 2nd week of next Month….”

  11. Sabeen Mahmud (unregistered) on March 21st, 2007 @ 6:33 pm

    @F. Ahmed: Thank you for the good wishes. A location map is imperative and on the agenda – will be up shortly. Cheers!

    Good to see your comments Fatima,

    I wish Sabeen well on her venture. And also hope for once to have a place, where one can relax and enjoy, rather then have their blood boil with the rythem of the loud music.

    @Sabeen Mahmud

    i just hope it won’t turn out to be like the one we have next to the macdonald on sea view (I have been away fron khi for only a year or so and now iam having problems of even remembering the name of that place:))

    that place is full of londas and laparas and full of thick smoke. once i went there with my family and had to almost jump out because i had problems breathing in there and the type of crowd it attracts look like chursees!

    i hope you will keep this in mind and try control the envoirnment:)

    once again…all the best!

    @Sabeen
    Just a personal question :
    I have noticed all the restaurants starting good in customer service ( especially quality of food and timely delivery) but soon they start going down in all this. I have noticed this with many and had to kick on their a**.

    I will make a surprise visit as soon as it opens & after some time to see if the energy is still there or just because you started earning bucks so you start doing what every business man/woman dukaandar and business owner does here….

  15. rani (unregistered) on March 21st, 2007 @ 8:19 pm

    @f. ahmed: i have been away from karachi for 2.5 years and am trying to remember the name of that place at seaview, next to McD’s. They’re based exaclty where the Young Ones restaurant once was…in the distant past, i loved Young Ones, great steaks and burgers and a great view, before we ‘reclaimed’ the land.

    I think the name is—- Cafe Mocha or something like that…can’t remember either!!!

    a lot of the KGS people used to hang out there.

  16. UZi (unregistered) on March 21st, 2007 @ 10:48 pm

    The Second Floor sounds something along the lines of Civil Junction in Islamabad. Best of luck, Sabeen, and let us know if we can be of any help at all! : )

    @F. Ahmed and Rani,

    Are you guys referring to Caffeine?

  18. UZi (unregistered) on March 21st, 2007 @ 11:06 pm

    Caffeine is les horribles!

  19. rani (unregistered) on March 22nd, 2007 @ 12:20 am

    CAFFEINE…yes, thats it! I’ve never been there actually, but I found it so frustrating that I couldnt remember the name when f. ahmed mentioned it.

    Thank you CAFFEINE! I might not have slept tonight trying to remember the damn name. and might you be the owner of the place ?? (just like sabeen turned out to be a kmb reader)…from our ranks, perhaps?!

  20. Adnan Siddiqi (unregistered) on March 22nd, 2007 @ 12:28 am

    coffee with books. A good idea.

    BTW are you providing WiFi? if yes then is it free? *grin*

  22. Salman A. (unregistered) on March 22nd, 2007 @ 1:16 am

    Is this place going to be a desi version of StarBucks with romantic dim lights and overly priced coffee and donuts.. and when you approach to the counter, you would be given tons to choices to pick from (like coffee nahi koi shadi ka menu ho gaya).. keep in mind, stealing is not creativity, no matter how perfectly you do your job.. LOL

  23. Ajnabi (unregistered) on March 22nd, 2007 @ 8:22 am

    What a fantastic idea The Second Floor is! I wish you the greatest of success and will visit next time I am in Karachi.

  24. F. AHMED (unregistered) on March 22nd, 2007 @ 10:11 am

    @Rani;

    Yes i was refferingto the same place you mentioned. as you said, it was really frustrating when i could not even remember it’s name:))\

    @caffeine:

    Books, and no smoking should keep the crowd manageable :) …are laptops safe to carry around? :P

  26. F. AHMED (unregistered) on March 22nd, 2007 @ 11:23 am

    Murtaza:

    yes they have to make it a no smoking envoirnment otherwise i won’t like to go there esp with family.

    as for laptops….pls note that carying a mobile phone in khi is a life threatening excercise so you can guess the risk of carying a laptop….

    but i haven’t heard many cases of laptop snatching! i guess they are much harder to resell sothe crroks prefer the mobiles as they can practically sell it within an hour of steeling it:)

  27. Jamal Shamsi (unregistered) on March 22nd, 2007 @ 1:19 pm

    Sabeen,

    Glad that you read the posts for your place here – am sure you know how many are keen for the place to be ‘ON’.

    My Tone, I regret if it was annoyance for you. – :(

    I went around the address mentioned, am just curious. about parking space and the safety of parked cars.

    The Ittehad area is not that well LIT and kind of VEE RAN, not SAFE – tell us about parking space and watchman around.

    These days, rear quarter glass breaking and emptying out the car cabin is common scene among the places like – Zamzama, Seaview, PAF Museum, Funland, The point basement parking, & The EXPO Centre.

    Any Thing visible & left inside the car – NOT SAFE. Will cost alot including Fixing of NEW Quarter glass.

    i think we all have given saben enough advice:))

    iam sure people don’t wan’t her to feel discouraged but just want to give a few good tips!

  29. Sabeen Mahmud (unregistered) on March 22nd, 2007 @ 7:50 pm

    Wow! Lots of questions, some concerns; all valid. I think I have answers to most things and one potential discussion point. I am writing up a detailed response and with it, will launch the T2F blog. Will come back here and let you know when the post is up.

    Meanwhile, it’s great to be getting virtual feedback and support; goodness knows, this is the craziest thing I’ve done to date.

    Peace!

  30. Jamal Shamsi (unregistered) on March 22nd, 2007 @ 8:49 pm

    Sabeen It is not at all to discourage am sure no one have that bearing when talking about T2F.

    NO NO, no not at all, It is not about discouraging – Call it Input for Precautionary measures UPFRONT to be consideered / TAKEN,

    so that by word of mouth people shall not say — Yar wahan na jana, andehra hota hai parking dour milti hai aur zara scary sa lagta hai — Rather it shall come up as —

    2nd floor, u are missing the place GO there it is a decent change, in suffocating loud environment of glitter and show offs’

    launch your website – ASAP
