What is the solution for Load Sheddings / Blackouts?

With all the unscheduled power cuts around the city and the hee-haw about the turning the old ‘city of lights’ into the ‘city of darkness’, are we just going to whine about it or are we going to do something to fix it?

One person cannot make a difference, but if no one starts, there will never be a difference!

We can’t get dozens of nuclear reactors to satisfy our never ending power hunger, we can not tame water to work the magic for us, we can’t have solar panels powering our street lights and traffic signals, but we can pitch in our tiny bit to make a big difference.

Well, how can YOU pitch in?

Hillarious

First it was an appartment building in Civil lines then this 6 storey building used for office purpose I have seen this sort of message outside elevator.

At persons own risk!

What if the person is not educated like the masis, peons, or sweepers etc?

Is CDGK or anyone else responsible for these issues? Interestingly the building’s owner runs a construction company.

Numerous other defects in buildings like the absence of emergency exits, no fire safety etc are observed even in buildings with principles having their own offices in them.

in other blogs #2: why not, prey?

Sometimes, it takes a foreigner’s perspective to understand the benefits of certain things. I’m sure you all have seen the huge number of eagles which fly around karachi, but have any of you thought about the potential benefits of them?

Andy H from romania discusses just that in his blog “Cs√≠kszereda musings” Read here.

The sky over Karachi is thick with birds. There’s nothing so odd about that, obviously, since many cities have flocks of starlings or sparrows or pigeons or what have you looping about the skyline…… What’s odd, I realised, is that it is unusual. Why is it that other cities are not so similarly blessed with an airborne rodent control system?

Is Daily DAWN at a silent war?

I noticed this last month but a recent post by Tee Emm about Dawn Metropolitan helped me take it in broader perspective. Just pick last 5 Sunday papers & any previous 5. Its prominent in especially editorials & main pages ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Do you think DAWN is at a silent war with someone? If one pay more attention towards its columnist page, editorial & the choice for letters to the editor.

One would like to see a balance but here is a logical question. If columnist/writer oppose/favor a side, does forcefully balancing out by paper to show neutrality is fair?. What the editorial policy says here?

Also, Is this all about the TV channel fight or it is a part of over all reflection of situation?

DAWN never appeared to be in love with any side but it was until recently when one could notice critical content taking majority space. Target of the attack is clearly (1) The military, often hidden cleverly inside the word “government” (2) The Religious parties or extremist & in between the political parties.

Is DAWN trying to put the “the unprintable slogans” (a word by Ayaz Amir in his well written & full of ponder-able questions) in indirect sentences or is forcefully dragging readers into its own personal issue?

Where in karachi: #93

Where in Karachi is this lush green, well maintained park to walk, jog, play and socialise?

Killed

We proudly send our minibuses to be displayed abroad. The drivers of those buses in Karachi aren’t so lucky. A police officer, also a ‘law teacher’ no less, killed a W-21 bus drive/owner yesterday. By kicking him in the chest. The reason? A petty quarrel.

Broadband Dreams #2

The white colored steel cage that you see in the picture contains what could soon become the linchpin of your digital life in Karachi. You can spot them everywhere along the roadsides in the business districts as well as the higher and middle class residential areas of Karachi.

This is the new face of the consumer broadband company that PTCL wants to be.

Nabi key ghulamon ka shehar

IMAGE_00019.jpg

Saw this banner hanging around Civic Center in which the Jamiat ulma-e- Pakistan has patted Karachiites on the successful Mehfil-e-milad.

It reminded me of all those traffic jams, blocking of roads (due to mehifil-e-milad) (specialy I remember the road coming from Punjab Chowrangi towards Sunset Boulevard where the Madrassa people had a “shamyana” and traffic was diverted on Sunday, 12th Rabiulawal), loud sound of the naats that were played on speakers fited on trucks and the show was carried out on roads (which offcourse involved security in the form of Police mobiles along them)

I wonder when will we the “nabi key ghuam” behave such that we really feel like the followers.

It also reminded me of the tragic incident that happened last year on the same occassion where many lost their lives and the “unkown suicide bomber” and the hands behind it were not known just like those unknown people who murdered Molana Shamsai.

Insecurity is no doubt the most untolerabale aspect of this city.

Sahil Bachao!

“The DHA has plans to construct theme parks, marinas, expo centers, expensive hotels and condominiums on the 14 km of beach area between McDonalds and the Golf Club. This area is currently enjoyed by Pakistanis of all backgrounds. This development threatens to shut out the common person’s free and unobstructed access to most of the beach environment. It will only serve the interests of real estate developers. It will end Karachi’s one multi-class open recreational space and will become a place only for the affluent few.” This is what the Sahil Bachao Coalition has to say.
They also say “come raise your voice with us. Wear blue!”
A protest at Clifton Beach is arranged on Sunday, April 29, 2007 at 5 pm. If you intend to join, meet at the parking lot outside McDonalds.
Sahil Bachao is sponsored by the Sahil Bachao Coalition. For press release and more information, visit sahilbachao.blogspot.com.
