Hurricane Expected

Storm headed toward Karachi and is expected to hit in the next 6 hours. It is 150 km away in the Arabian Sea as I type.
Wherever you are, please head home. The traffic is likely going to be ugly and with added rainfall and strong winds it is advisable to not be out on the roads.

CNN predicts heavy showers and thunder over the next four days.

First of all Hurricanes do not occur in this part of the world. We have what is called Tropical storms.

This particular one is names 03B and it not headed for Karachi but its trajectory is Gulf of Oman – as usual!

It will be closet to our region sometime tonight. We may have a few showers and some gusts of winds but nothing that will blow off your panties!

And please stop pointing to the local Met office link whose web site is half operational at best and very user unfriendly.

Besides don’t put much into forecasts that have the name of Director General propagated and advertised all the time, be it TV, Radio or any other medium. Makes it sound like a one man show.

I don’t mind someone printing their name or post in the forecast BUT
Why Director General has to sign these sort of information…can’t it be some other lil officer or meteorological services as a whole? lol :S

@Teeth, @Imran: The storm did not miss, Umar made the little error in response to my story.

See my detailed AND ACCURATE explanation with correct links in his post http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/2007/06/tropical_storm.phtml

and earlier in @Teeth’s post http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/2007/06/230_lives_lost.phtml

@BOZZ, @X: Wunderground, weather.com all give very generic information. Really useless in giving short term info.

@BOZZ: pakmet indeed is the old hopeless site.

http://www.met.gov.pk/indexNew.asp is the new (surprisingly good) site. See the Infra-Red image under “Satellite and Radars”. Latest images on our area you can find anywhere.

Or you can go directly http://www.met.gov.pk/TempFrame/?targetLink=http://www.pakmet.com.pk/Subpage1/S_images/html_files/ir_img.html here.

@X: The advisory is old (though valid). Follow link above.

WARNING: As noted in my previous post, the wind is blowing East to West. It should start blowing from South-East to North-West later tonight. Unless some drastic change of direction takes place, THAT IS WHEN THE TAIL OF TROPICAL STORM 03B hits Karachi.

For wind speeds, wave heights and rain info see my previous comments in posts mentioned above.

Better stay indoors. This one is closer than you think.

To summarize: the storm will not be as bad as projected. Do not be out on the roads if you dont have to!

The billboards fell off because they weren’t construted propoerly to stand these types of winds. There has not been a need for this before, this hopefully results in better planning.

Poles and other structures fell to the ground for the same reasons.
