An incident that made me think

Yesterday I experienced something which made me think about the values in our society. Values that we say come from our religion Islam.

I had a big basket full of bakery stuff which I wanted to get wrapped up nicely as it was a gift for someone. I was at United Bakery in Bahadurabad and when I came out with the big basket trying to find a gift shop where I could get it wrapped up nicely, I spotted this gift shop next to Untied Bakery.

I went inside hoping that I would be able to get the job done. However, the nice looking bearded gentleman at the counter refused to do gift wraps. I then requested him to let me do it myself in the shop, without occupying too much space, as I had all the stuff with me including the wrapping paper, he refused again. I then purchased a greeting card from the shop, thinking he would allow me to wrap the gift now that I made a purchase from him, he still didn’t allow me to use a corner of his shop to do it. It really wouldn’t have bothered him or his customers, but nevertheless, I had to leave the shop without success.

I was really wondering if I would have been at his place, I would have been kind enough to not only let anyone use the space but help the person in every possible way.

This was a small incident that made me wonder if Islam is only about keeping a beard? Whatever happened to Huqooq-ul-Ibad, being courteous and kind, and leaving a good impression on your fellows?

my point is, I think muslims should show it through behavior.
raising painchas, having beards, is not the key to jannat.
there are hell lot of people doing good and impressing us (me, Ali G and many others) who do not necessarily keep a beard or practice such that they look muslims @ first sight.
But then these men, who try not to make eye contact with women (im Not saying its bad, its definitly according to the teachings of Islam), keeping a maintained beard (the sunnah way) keeping painchas raised (the sunnah way) … they all @ first sight look muslims and when they talk rudely to others who may or may not be muslims, may or may not be modern, all I know is simple human beings in whatever attire, they who look (i mean look i dunno if they are from inside) staunch muslims, theire tongue , their acts and sometimes their bodies dont show what respect they have for religion. (momin woh hay jis key zaban or hath sey dosray mulman mehfooz hoon)

I for one case is muslim who faced this,
My intention is not telling the world that our religion is wrong. What I want to convey is that this is not what Islam teaches us. The very first lesson that comes in is the treatment towards people, the treatment towards women, towards children, towards old men
Today, we opt for beard, scarfs, hijabs and all attire to show us Muslims, (which I donot say is wrong) but what when u open your mouth you should show kindness. Theres a beautiful way of saying no, rather than looking @ others like they are insects ( I mean takkabur, mutakabir is a sifat of Allah nd suits no human being) and then saying ‘no’.
I hope I made my myself clear.
For rest who think Islam treats women as second citizen, please enlighten yourselves by reading what place ur mother who is a woman gets just cause of islam, what rights ur wives have over you (more rights than you have over them) and what status Islam has given woman, no other religion does.

@Thomisina: you seem the most intellectual one, to interpret exactly what I wanted to point out.
There was this classmate of mine who was Hindu, but
in short, i always wanted him to be a Muslim, he would have been a role model in present world.
What i learnt from him, on inviting him towards Islam, he showed me books, he showed me mullahs (who thought they were) and then he told me that it wasn’t that there are no pious men, but u muslims make fun of your religion urself. even if muslims were kind enough within themselves I (he) would have accepted Islam.
It cut my throat and that day I decided, I might not hurt anyone and be kind to all, despite my modern attire to show them what Islam from inside is. All about loving people.

know dude, you are right. But the gift was for my inlaws and as soon as I would have entered house, they would have seen it. So i wanted it to be beautiful enough to make their hearts dance. And it was big enough not to be wrapped in car.

This is real pitty that some people who dont know much about abcd of Islam are now started destroying the image of it.

First of all having a beard doesnt automatically mean that this particular human must have a divine personality.

Shame on the person who originally posted this obnoxious post, and expect people to agree to his stupid judgement on Islam.

Our youth are drinking, smoking , and doing all sorts of devilish activities and also shame on those westernised parents who let their children perform such immoral acts.. all they blame is Islam.

Please dont crucify Islam in such appaling manner and, please dont become tout of the west.

Without reading much, what the others opt to say about your “incident”, that touched your sensitive nerve, all I want to ask you, how come you can relate relate this incident to the spirit of Islam. I am sure, you are aware of the spirit, all you needed to say that we, as individuals and as a nation, are just getting paranoid with the Islam Phobea, created by the western media. BIBI, that man was a loser, and I completely agree that he should have acted otherwise, as suggested by yourself. But his not helping has nothing to do with our religion. Had this been the case, I am sure, you would have been standing in different queue between males. So, please keep Islam out of this controversy!

    :)

I dont know where to start and what to write …

@ Unaiza: Not necessarily, what you have in mind can be refelected by your words … Your frustration is true and we all share it.

But yes, mention of beard and Islam, especially when the whole society is in grip of division between so-called Moderates & fundamentalist … irks the kind of responses above.

    Advise: DO THINK BEFORE INK

    @ ALL BROTHERS & SISTERS:

We all advocating the same thing here … and all who know Unaiza personally can guarantee … she by no means is against beard or Islam.

Consider it slip of her thoughts and prefer to correct her instead of attacking her.

We all can prove that Islam means PEACE.

at times I love to be a FundaMENSANist.

May Allah guide & help us all. (Amen)

Who knows what you was packing? may be a BomB? and if you had all the packing material with you why you did not pack it at United Bakery? Would you allow a stranger to come to your place and PACK something? Its nothing to do with the Beard or Muslim/Islam.

    Hey Unaizah,

I agree with the message behind what you’re saying but I completely disagree with your double standards regarding good deeds.

Your implication that good deeds should increase with the appearance of a beard or unchi shalwar is unrealistic. The requirement of good behaviour is universal for all mankind – beard or sans beard. I know many ppl, including moderators of this blog who dress unislamically, use foul language in their speech and in the text of their blogs; gossip and commit other sins predetermined as wrong by islam. Why is it that these acts are not considered bad deeds or posted about? Wouldnt you agree that these things arent that big of a deal until that moderator happened to be a hijabi or beardo?

my point unaiza, that while the man embraced the beard and u disregarded the hijab, you probably stood before Allah at a greater loss because while he refused to help you out (which isnt a sin because its his perogative to choose whether or not to, he just missed out on an opportunity to gain a reward), while you chose to judge his intentions based on his appearance (which is a sin!). He simply may not want to be alone in a room with a woman – you never know his intention! Whatever his reason may be, perhaps we should remember the saying of the companions: ‘we used to spend days talking about others, but when islam came and we saw ourselves, we didnt have time to even look at others after seeing our own faults’. Moral of the story: it is generally those who overlook their own faults that find it easy to spend time on other ppls faults.

Unaiza doesn’t work at Daily Times, I do. I’m Urooj, not Unaiza. There’s a “very subtle” difference in the spellings of the two names, no? :P

PS: I really felt like adding the word “idiot,” too (to describe our all-knowing friend, Kashif-X), but then I decided to hold my tongue. Feh!

  22. Kashif-x (unregistered) on July 12th, 2007 @ 1:12 am

Sorry Urooj, just because you work at DT dosnt mean you have the right to join the Unaiza stupidity bandwagon.

I am no religious extremist and quite happy the way extremists are being handled currently, but said that, some people over here have a constant habbit of stupidily inserting islam whenever a wrong is being done.

What is the sense and logic to compare a bearded guy at United Bakery with Islam and its values ?

Its people like this who disgust me, this is a blog for discussing Karachi, since when did it become a forum for propogating ones religious values on anothers?

So all those people trigger happy to go at Islam and Mullas just because some bearded guy didnt wrap your goodies, pls keep your two cents to yourself and get a life.

First of all big shame to all those who think that lal masjid people were extremists. This is a big conspiracy against muslims to stop sending their young ones to madrasas.

General Pervaiz Musharraf has a face of evil, and spirit of a devil, he has been assigned the project to kill and eliminate all the innocent and prominent islamic personalities from Pakistan. This s-o-b is wiping out everyone who challenges his power. He thinks he is God, but this by-product of west will soon reach to his own end, when the west finally pulls off the oxygen mask of him.

Shame on 17 million of Pakistanis who silently watched the lal masjid drama out of fear of their own lifes and didnt do anything . The operation silence must have been named because everyone was so silenttttttt.

Shame on Pakistani Army too that they are killing fellow Pakistanis who are actually Muslim brothers and sisters in such disgusting manner. Those inside mosque were as much threatened and obviously as a defensive measure had to stop those drunkard army elephants against the mosque demolition.

All those so-called liberals who taking side of Government will one day be asked by Allah that why they became such silent spectators to this crime to humanity.

Musharraf- s-o-b including all his agents should be tried in international court of justice for such mass genocide of thousand of civilians.

Lal masjid was destroyed by bullets on America’s orders and Musharraf their pet dog carried operation out whole operation with such massive force that bodies were left-out beyond identification.

What was the crime of lal masjid people, why Government was so impatient to destroy the mosque.

The biggest extremists are Musharraf and 17 million of population of so-called Islamic republic of Pakistan. Watch out guys curse of Allah is coming, first it was earth quake then it was flood and who knows whats next….

Amazingly brilliant analysis of the whole episode. tend to agree with you.

    Mansoor
Your post just sent shivers down my spine. I feel like spitting at the faces of those armymen who killed their muslim countrymen like nobody will kill cats and dogs. And what was their crime, that they were demanding Islam and a handle on growing lawlessness and prostitution?

You are right, Allah’s wrath is upon us, and nobody ever deserved it more.

  26. mansoor (unregistered) on July 13th, 2007 @ 4:42 pm

Imtiaz and others , the problem with you guys is that you are brain washed and you are in a state of complete illusion and total denial of ground realities.

Lal masjid incident as I said before is a western conspiracy so that muslims should stop sending their kids to madrassas.

I dont think lal masjid people were extremists, if they were extremists why didnt they kill any single foreigner- not even 1. It is not difficult to kidnap few and assassinate them. Again how many madrasa people in Pakistan in entire history have killed any westerner- “NONE”. On the other hand the state is initiating an action against madrasas to please their bosses in USA etc. How many molvis were martyred so far- tons of molvis in this so called islamic country are loosing their precious lifes on daily basis.

Why Musharraf SOB was so impatient to kill many innocent people who infact took REFUGE in a holy place. Musharraf wanted a LIFELINE from his un-holy bosses so that he can continue to serve their evil purposes- to disintegrate the civil society.

You shouldnt use a word extremists, these people are “resistance fighters” who are trying to save foundation of Islam in Pakistan. Westernisation is a poison pill that every Pakistani including you is taking every day without thinking that one day it will just kill you and your generations.

Musharraf from very first day wanted to raid the mosque, he is an American agent and serving their interests to wipe out word islam from our society.
I mean the way his foces bombarded the whole mosque, its just brutal and painful to see 1000s of innocent people loosing lifes on orders of just one person- Musharraf.

He should be tried in court of law for extra judicial killings and sentenced to death so that finally some justice can be served.

Wake up or you die in complete ignorance.

@Mansoor and others who are supporting his views:

Musharraf did what needed to be done for the Sake of Islam and Pakistan. lal masjid incident was not a western conspiracy rather it was Jahil views of these Mullahs. Taking law in your hand, kidnapping people from thier houses, snatching arms from your own country’s forces, Illigal occupation of land, kidnapping foriegners and forcing them to wear Burka,,,,What kind of Islam they were practicing???Give me a single example from the life of our prophet where he did or preach anything like this???Do you think that is how he preached Islam?? What about Sabar and husnai ikhlaq which was the main weapons of our Propher (PBUH)???Musharaf tried his best to avoid this but lal masjid people asked for it. He even brought IMAM-e Kaba but they did not listen to him. What do you want??TAlibaan in pakistan so they can beat our sisters and mothers with sticks if they are not wearing Burka?? so they can close all schools for girls and take the driving licenses from them???or force everybody to have a beard???

All these stupid mullahs claim to hate West and western things and burn KFC,Mac, pizza hut and ask us to boycott Coke, but they all use western technologies, what an irony??? The Danm lal masjid imam and all of mullahs like him using Cell phones, Internet, Computers, Cars do they think all these things are invented and made in Muslim countries and by Muslims??? Why the hell they use them if they hate everything from West…
Go check the houses of all these so called Mullahs from JI and JUI and others, they all living luxury lives when people on the street sleeping with empty stomach..DO they ever think about the preaching of out be loved prophet about sharing food with the neighbour and making sure they dont go to bed hungry????How many kids on the streets of Karachi sleep hungry, but all these mullahs move around in thier SUVs protesting against west dont have time to come out thier AC cars to feed them….?????
Come on guys this is not the time to argue with each other, its the time to work togather against these so called Mullahs..
Mushraff is not against Islam, nobody who calls himself Muslim can’t be against Islam, but we are against those who are using Islam to fill thier pockets…enough said
