Restaurant Review #9: Lal Qila

I have been to Lal Qila many times and I got another chance to eat there last night.

For those who don’t know, Lal Qila is located on main Sharae Faisal across the road from Awami Markaz. The dinner was organized by my employer organization so I don’t know how much they charged for the buffet, but if I remember correctly from my previous visit, it was around Rs. 500 per person.

The restaurant serves food based on authentic theme, and although I noticed some deviations, (like a pasta dish which is by no means authentic indian/pakistani), the variety of the food is pretty good. There is everything from haleem to paye to prawns and BBQ. There were some key items missing like behari kabab or traditional chicken tikkas, but at the same time you will find many dishes that you’ve perhaps never tried before.

In short, this is the best authentic food you can find under one roof, and at half a thousand rupees you can try each and every dish that they serve.

Rating: 7/10

You guys always do a great job with the restaurant reviews but, correct me if im wrong, there is no place on the net where you can get reviews on all all the major karachi eateries in one place. Considering how one of the main forms of entertainment in karachis is to stuff your face with fabulous food, it suprises me that there isnt a place on the net that tells you whats new, where to eat, what to order and etc.. you guys do a good job of getting the news out there but it is not nearly enough.. I frequent karachi once a year for a few months, so i never really know whats going on.. and it seems that restaurants are gaurded as secrets at times. same goes for other events happening in town, like shows, concerts and etc.. so is there a place on the net informing us less knowledgeable of the on goings of karachi particularly the restaurants? Im always out of the loop and run out of things to do in karachi (i get so tired of going for ‘coffee’)

How come with such good review rating is only 7 out of 10? What is missing?

One correction, the right word is ‘Qala’, which rhymes with ‘tala’ meaning ‘fried’ in English or as in buree ‘bala’ in Urdu. I notice it has been misspelt at the restaurant itself, so NOT your fault :)

Oh sounds good, I saw a few programmes on masala TV shot at Lal Qila :-)

But believe me you should be happy that there were no Behari Kababs :-p

Hey Umar, maybe you should check eatkarachi.com/blog for restaurant reviews in Karachi.

Personally, I think there is no substitute for home made food, as shown here :D

Umar, you are way too generous by giving LQ a ‘7’. I would give it no more than a ‘5’. Esp. when it has a pathetic range of Desserts.

    Mr. Umar,
You talk about Lal Qila but some times life is not very simple and easy, as on the following:
