Alamgir – making a come back

http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/images/2007/08/junemb/alamgir-thumb.jpgAlamgir, the pop sensation in 70’s also known as Elvis of the East is making a come back. I grew up hearing songs like Albela Rahi, Dekha Na Tha Kabhi Hum Ne, Kabhi Tum Idhar Se Guzar Ke,Sham Se Pehile Aana, Ye Shaam Aur Tera Naam & i cannot tell how crazy i was for his catchy tunes back then. Back in 80’s when i used to live in Gulshan every Shaadi had this “Maine Tumhari Gagar Se” song a must in it.

Alamgir came to Karachi in 70’s with his guitar, shirt & a small tape recorder. While working hard for a job he started playing guitar, at a small cafe in Tariq Road area called the “Cafe D Khan” a place known for intellectual gatherings. (Do we still have any?). [ Read his complete story]

Karachi didn’t disappoint him & slowly & surely he made it to his first hit Albela Rahi & from there and then there was no looking back. He left music in 90’s & as per this website he is making a come back. One would love to see him in his 70’s original style with some latest improvisation but lets see what he is up to. I tried very hard but failed to find any video’s for the songs i listed in starting para. If readers can, it will be great.

wow! thats great! the market is completely open for singers of his caliber. his contemporaries like Shehki and Hassan Jahangir tried their luck but no success for them though. Lets hope he has a proper plan before launching himself back in to the arena

Well I’m not so sure about his comeback, but I do know that he has been doing some shows here in US for the past few years. Usually he will do a 14th August show or some type of little charity type show where you can pretty much pay him really low price tag for his concert. I’m not sure, but I think he lives in Texas or some other part of US, because he’s alwyas around. A couple years ago we had a 14th August show in Chicago suburbs and we had him sing along with some other singers. I was part of his security team, but he didn’t really need security. Most of the younger generation doesn’t even know him or recognize his songs so thats why I wonder about his come back. That seems to be same story with Tehseen Jawed here also.
