Traffic Mayhem
It seems that the traffic situation in Karachi is no longer news, but more of a daily routine for Karachi. Keeping that in mind, I feel today was an exceptionally bad day when we were again served up with yet another massive traffic jam right smack on Shahrah-e-Faisal. The problem can be gauged by the fact that my usual ten-minute morning drive to work (which is a blessing) was converted to a 50-minute crawl from Karsaz to Gora Qaburstan (I could have easily walked it faster). The nightmare did not get any better for Karachi as throughout the day the confusion persisted and was comparable to the traffic jam we saw last year when the clouds literally wept precisely at the evening rush hour, which saw people stuck in traffic for hours and reach home well into the night
Today’s mess was due to construction work on the Shahrai-Faisal – Defense intersection, no doubt this intersection was in need of some major touch-ups, but one has to wonder why the authorities cannot foresee the inconvenience and plan for alternative properly paved bypasses just to ensure that the city is not inconvenienced resulting in millions of rupees worth of time and fuel wastage. What mess were you stuck in today !!!
i had a narrow escape tpday. i used qayyumabad bridge to move to clifton instread of using SF. My manager got stuck at SF for 2.5 hrs this noon.
will these rishwat khoor and jahil traffic police gonna do some thing?
First, please write proper English. Otherwise, it is OK to write in Urdu or Sindhi(Roman script or nastaaliq or typescript).
Secondly, what is Defence / Drigh Road intersection? Do you mean Kala Pul area and Korangi Road?Did you hear about some name change that none of us has heard about?
Balma – well call it by any name – you still got the point ;) hence all is well
Karachi is the 8th largest metropolitan city in the world. The traffic problems we face are nothing compared to other smaller and less crowded cities.
That being said, there is work being done to improve the flow of traffic.
Bigger cars need to be taxed higher, import duties on smaller cars should be lowered, CNG Buses are going to help and MOST importantly KARACHI MASS TRANSIT projects will help if they are only survive through the government changes that might happen in the coming year.
uffff keya mess hoa hai aaj karachi main…. main mai kolachi se hasan squire ki taraf aaya hoo MA jinnah road.. tower burns road….. un ki itni buri halat hai aur wahan tou 3 din kah baad bhi paani khara hoa hai…..aur rahi CNg buses ki baat tou main tou kahta hoon kah woh na chaleen tou filhaal better hai…roads pay wese hi jagah nahin hai 30 mins waali traveling main 1-1:30 mins tak lag jaatay hain
@ Teeth Maestro
Welcome to the BIG city, want to enjoy life in big city then STOP complaining.
I had to go to driving license branch in Clifton today, I narrowly escaped the rush early in the morning. Major cause was the FTC turn on S.F. for defence. Virtually all cars in all lanes were trying to use the said turn which seemed to me even narrower than a single lane thus causing the mess. On my way back, I witnessed that the effect had reached to Awami Markaz. It was one horrible day for those who stuck there.
Any North Nazimabadian saw the “event” currently being held at Water Pump Signal (Five Star Chowk) by bhai log? The activity has caused traffic jam there as the bhai log who r playing on top of the pumping station has parked their vehicles in a circular pattern arround the chowrangi. Traffic police is there but traffic is still a mess. The bhai logs r saying something abt the little DON (read Babur Ghori) and have hired those yellow suited guys who r playing desi “orchestra” on the roof top (of the pumping station).
@PKhan, Its not the issue of a big or a small city. Its called Ill Planning or if I put it better, no planning at all?
teeth mian not only SF, entire karachi was jammed today. I got stuck near Jinnah hospital for 1 hour.
Blessed are those who work from their homes.
More blessed are those that are not living in this God forsaken city.
@HITMAN i had to attend a wedding in block L North Nazimabad just opposite Five Star chowrangi.. and i was stuck in the jam coz MQM’s supporter had organized rally bang right in the middle of the road and created a mess on all the adjoining roads , after enduring the jam for almost 90 mins managed to get away and came back without attending the wedding.. just saw news ticker on geo that MQM’s rally was to proceed to national stadium to attend a concert …
@HITMAN baber ghauri(money making machine of MQM) owns many properties around that chowrangi…
We can learn a lot from Singapore model when it comes to cars on the road. They use COE that stand for certification of eligibilty which you have to purchase for say 20,000 dollars and it is good for 10 years. Then again in a corrupt society like Pakistan how will that work?Transparency is a must before you can make your self a land of law abiding citizen.
Inshallah we will get there in another 60 years.
Supreme court has taken sou motto action against yestereve traffic jam. DIG in trouble.
@Bozz: I won’t term Karachi as God forsaken if I were you cause maybe you don’t know what happen to places which are forsaken by God.
what would the poor DIG say.. that this friggin Nazim has dug up the whole city and rain has made all those dug up road as deathtraps coz when water fills up then these ditches are not visible and people and cars fall into them.. and large craters have appeared on the roads even right in front of main gate of Army House on Daud Pota Road…
*and large craters have appeared …. even right in front of main gate of Army House on Daud Pota Road…
**** And you have a problem with that?
@Kashif – Are you saying that things could get worse?
And further more, are you implying that you have had the experience of having visited places forsaken by God?
Mmmm interesting!
PKHAN: What you are saying to Teeth is totally insane! What you mean is that one should NOT point out anything that is causing trouble on LARGE scale and should sit at home if he has to enjoy life? Dude, that’s just insane! If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen… some philosophy!
Well today i was stuck in traffic very badly, from Korangi Crossing to I.I Chundrigar road (UBL Head Office) the total time to reach there is almost 25 to 30 minutes, but i stuck in traffice on Brooks Chowranig (Godam Chowrangi) for one hour, the traffic was jam for one side because the road was uneven and the damn traffic police dont take notice for this if they repair that portion from Brooks to New KPT Flyover the traffice will never jam, well that the story of one side let see the other side of the road from KPT Flyover to Brooks chowrangi, what i saw the Hoshyar people were going from wrong way from Brooks to New KPT flyover and due to them the other side of the traffic was totally jam from Brooks Chowrangi to Akhtar Colony thak God i didnt take that turn (the wrong way) i would be stuck for 5 hours as other pple stuck…. well just want to say there is no issue of rain or that much of road problems we should go in our lanes and do not go from wrong side….think about it….
