60th Independence Day Celebration With Bullets !

http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/images/2007/08/bullet14-thumb.jpg At midnight, as soon as the date on our calendars turned to 14 of August the city bursted into celebrations for the 60th independence day of Pakistan and Karachi started to sound like a battlefield. The bangs and Booms of fire crackers and the sounds of live shots being fired in the air was deafening.

That night a token of 14 august celebrations in the form of a stray bullet landed on the asbestos roof of our laundry room inches away from my head while I was walking out of this room. Thankfully the bullet had lost it’s force on the course of it’s journey and caused no damage to the roof or any one else because even with that little force it could have injured someone (me) seriously.

What’s the fun behind loud explosions and the gun shots, I fail to understand. I guess the people have forgotten the post and pre partitions blood shed, they have forgotten the year 65 and 71 wars and several battles our country fought in which thousands and thousands of innocent civilians on both sides of the border lost their lives.

Since when have we become so violent that we enjoy the sounds of explosions and bullets, which in real life are considered testament to casualties, the sounds which even animals are scared of, the sounds of weaponry and bombs, how could they be a medium of enjoyment.

Pakistan has achieved a 60 year milestone but we have still a long way to go, I love this country to the core of my heart and I love the people of Pakistan even more and It hurts to see them being ignorant at times, it hurts when it seems they care for each other no more, it hurts because they are the people who are among us, the people of our native land, the people of Pakistan.

Celebrating is every one’s right, but Arial firing, cracker bangs and loud booms all but hurts. There are better options one can adopt but turning the city into a battlefield is not a good way to celebrate.

Shocking – glad to see that no one got hurt – but its sad but the prevalent gun culture which has made regular celebrations a game of death.

    Sad

This is not about the celeberation but to check your weapons condition whether they are jam or working fine twice in a year other is new year.

2 innocent people were killed and several are injured during celeberation firing at night between 13 and 14 august 2007. It should not happen.

People should think first before doing such an show of ignorance and self satisfaction out of firing.its really stupidity.on this Independence day we shoudl thank God that we have got independence not by showing our weapons but by our deeds that we are capable of holding this independence.i hope and pray the people will understand someday.but we have more 60 years to go to come to right track of sane thinking and difference between celebrating with joy not by show off.Long live Liberty and Freedom

Stray bullets have been known to kill over 10 people each 14th August; what goes up must come down!

You can tell people not to do Havai firing and explain that it has been known to take innocent lives.

I stopped doing it and told others not to do it.

Well… if i am not mistaken this is an AK47 bullet and it still possess quite a punch even when traveling under influence of gravity… it is enough to crack your head.

I totally know what your saying!! I was born and raised in USA(TEXAS, and when i went back to Karachi these past to December break, I Experienced New Years Eve celebration, I felt as if all the illiterate people decided to pick up guns and celebrate. I wonder where they adopt this type of thinking, it make my mothers land look like it has a bunch of terrorist or blood hungry apes. We living in america don not celebrate in such criminal and unlogical ways. FORGET GOD BLESS AMERICA, GOD NEEDS TO BLESS KARACHI, for its future looks very dim
