Ramadan deals?
Ramadan is upon us, and doing what we Karachiites love to do, we are still eating out.
Just to help people make decisions, I would request all commenters to post good Iftaar / Sehri deals in different restaurants.
I’ll start off:
Nando’s is giving quarter chicken meal with 2 sidelines and 1 drink for Rs 200 + tax (which comes to Rs 230).
Or you could opt for a half chicken meal with 2 sidelines and 1 drink for Rs 300 + tax (which comes to Rs. 345).

All you can eat at Pizza Hut for JUST Rs. 385 + Tax
Thats for the iftaar
Now why would anyone want to eat out at iftari? And that too at a junk food joint?
Iftari at home is the best if you ask me. Id rather stay right at home and enjoy the food.
I don’t get too much time between Maghrib and Isha prayers and after Taraweeh, can’t even move.
Iftaari outside is a waste of money. How much could you eat at one go?
Although trying it out once or twice for fun is not a bad thing.
Almost every author of KMB would have made several post about the different issues of society including poverty and everyone in past 11 months would have whined about betterment of society by making lots of “we should do this or that” but when the time came to actually implement it, everyone become ignorant.
you guys are used to eat such junk food other months of the year. one could prepare/buy *essential* iftar stuff within 100 Rs/day for four members. If you guys save Rs.250 and try to spend the money to prepare eid clothes of those kids whosse parents are not capable to buy happiness for your kids then it would really give some good feeling. Try once, it wouldn’t hurt you at all. Trust me you will not die if you don’t visit KFC,PIZZA or NANDOS for a month.
s/your kids/their kids
Seconding Adnan. Btw if somebody come up with list of people who are deserving and should be given Iftar/Eidee, let me know.
Well said Adnan!!
Eating iftari outside is a total waste of time. And most places that I have had iftari had, I didn’t feel the religious fervor.
I like this place on the Dalmia road called ‘Shehnai’ for iftari.
Home iftari is the best.
Great Adnan. Just great ideas. We wud like to contribute if youre leading any such effort.
Are you?
Nandos has advertised well this ramadan….here’s there ramadan commercial

I TAKE MY HAT OFF TO ADNAN. (no pun intended)
respect for adnan ZIDDI.qi :)))
I hope all scums choke on their JUNK AFTARI at rip-off restaurants.
What is Ramadan oooH you mean Ramzan. Please don’t Arabified this blog our Urdu is too need some recognition.
What is Ramadan?
OOOOH you mean Ramzan, btw what is wrong with URDU language that you guys are imposing Arabic on us :-?
Neena, did you ever whine infront of your teacher who might have taught you Chemistry rather “Keemya”.?
if KMB is Urdu blog then why ru writing in english. DOn’t you know how to write in Urdu fonts? hypocrisy at its best.
Ramadan is related to Islam and Islam is based on Quran which is in Arabic. Being a professional in my own field, I consider it professionalism to use the original terms rather translated one. None of IT programmer in Pakistan bothered to translated “GW basic” language to “GW Bunyadi”
in last, troll somewhere else.
@Unpathetic: I don’t remember whether it’s some hadith or not but the idea is to start charity from Home. What it means to help your poor relatives first then see outside. If you have any such relative who has been living hand to mouth then it’s advised to help him first. You can always ask your parents and other relatives to find out such relatives.
Even angraiz k bachay call it Ramadan. *grin*
Ever had a chance to see people eating in Pizza hut at Iftar. Eating the delicious part and piling up crust in a dish, they don’t think even for a moment abt people who donot have anything to eat, they don’t have anything to break their fast with. Sad!
Very sensible of Adnan.,
allow me to add further, ration for a family of 2 adults and 2 children cost approx Rs.1500.00 (5 kg ata, 5KG cooking oil, 8 kgs of assorted pulses [ DALs ], 5 kg sugar, 4 kgs of powder milk [ millac bags ] 1 kg of salt,
that takes no less then 15 minutes to gather the stuff from any store and give to a needy who dare not speak or ask for ration but yes look at us when we come out of store and load the trunks of our cars.
Areas like Orangi ,Korangi and other Kachi abadis are not on other planet. One can make efforts to visit those areas and investigate himself for genuine needy people. Difficult but not impossible. Rs.1500 as Jamal calculated is not a big figure for a person who is earning > 20,000 /month.
Karachi is the city of people who alone give more charity than entire Pakistan. You can find such contributors in your areas as well. if no luck then start yourself.
I would add further that never give amount in Cash. If your intention is to arrange monthly ration then buy it yourself and distribute otherwise chances of corruption get increased. Beside that, participating practically is not only preferred religiously but it also make you realize that you are thousand times better than millions of people around you.
last but not least, Don’t trust in so called NGOs. Even if they are advertised by KMB authors. They have proved them corrupt by many ways.
@adnan… there are some welfare organizations who are already doing wat u have said above . they are feeding the poors, taking care of widows etc etc. they have well managed setup. why dont we give our money to them instead of starting our setup which is a tedious task.
A very recognized org. is Al-Ameen trust and the other one is Azmat-e-Pakistan foundation. i really do have trust on them. al-Ameen trust has world class accounting dept as i have heared. they keep track of ur every penny.
its just a personal opinion, from which some ppl can also disagree
bhai Unknown(though you are not unknown to me ;D ), I knew these names but not everyone can be assumed to agree upon them therefore I didn’t like to mention any name/source.
What about this Hadees:: “Wise is the man, who interferes not in matters of which he has no knowledge.” Including other people’s affairs. I mean I know a lot of people who have great iftaars at home and outdoors AND help ppl out of a sense of gnerosity.
I have an uncle who would have all the junk food he could have, pepsi and pakoras and nimko are his favorites – AND he stopped by to help children on the road. Or help someone he saw crying by the road.
Too mayn assumptions about other people’s lives aren’t the Muslim way to begin with. The only true thing was: Begin at home, and stay focused there.
Judgment is the prerogative of Allah.
We’ve always given charity. And good loads of it – like many many other Pakistani. Since when was it assumed that we are cruel people not providing for the poor? Have our family’s accounts been audited by some God’s sentry?
Its tasteless to have to explain that to people who haven’t heard of the commandment of “Don’t advertise your charities.” Why should we say, Maaf kardo bhai, we’ve already donated such and such amount.
The truth is people are preaching what they are NOT doing. Which is why they are preaching, and not doing. go figure.
Rasool Allah (PBUH) ka farman hai, sab sai behtreen khaiyrat / sadqa woh hai to apnay hath sai mustahiq ko deya jai, aur iss tarah karo kai right hand sai do tou left hand ko pata na chalay.

I agree though that the spirit of ramadan in general seems to be missing – and there’s too much emphasis on food preparation. But I dunno what has changed b/c as kids, we felt ramadan was very festive. Our grandmother used to manage the whole thing, we had a variety of ramadan-special food. And we arranged Rooh-Afza and iftaar for poor people. Besides it was all somehow very spiritual.
What I felt this year was this that we have kept the food part there, and forgotten the rest of it. The special prayers, etc. I think parents are too obsessed with social status and success of their children, and keep them off prayers and taravih fearing that somehow the child (who is sometimes 30 years old) might become too sick to get up in the morning and earn big bucks and tell everyone how much more they have.
THAT is more of a problem. Charity is still there, in fact many people inclusing seemingly reckless young persons are giving much much more including their time. But maybe the arrangement of collective Salaat and other congregational activities is missing. Or whatever else we have been doing the other 11 months is too deeply a part of us now.
Darn. I hate being negative. :/
Poor khurram
he must hv pulled half his hair by now
dnt worry khurram
i v noted the deal at nandoz ;-D
@ Jamal:
Recently – I helped out a sad looking couple I saw sitting by the road, the woman seemed to be dying of TB. I was in a cab, and asked the driver to pick them up, drop me, buy them some food, and drop them home. But for those few minutes, I had a sense of alert given all the bad incidents that take place in the city… but I shooed it away realizing it was just the devil’s way of preventing me from doing good.
But anyway, I didn’t get dropped off right in front of my house on a hunch. I pretended to wait in front of another house, and asked the driver to leave. I was afraid that my gesture *might* be seeing as the act of the Golden Duck who could be killed to get all golden eggs at once. I almost offered the man to earn his living by working at our home which was under repair then, and we employed new helpers everyday.
But just a hunch stopped me short of that. I wished that may Allah give mercy to another heart which would take care of the nearly dying woman. She had just been taken out of a hospital which seemed to be screwing the couple for money.
This was just a random act, but we do help quite a few other people despite our limited means, sometimes we give up our own plans – I never get funds from my father for some projects I need to get done, b/c he’s helping out desperate family members with their sudden problems and stuff. I don’t worry – I leave to Allah, there is a time and place for everything, and even though I suffer in ways I can’t account for sounding unthankful – I am not unhappy. I am grateful for being part of a family where we put others first.
Now this long story was for two reasons: 1/ to show that it’s NOT good to attack others for not helping the poor – how on earth does one know what others are sacrificing for their relatives and others? I find accusatory statements on this board extremely hurtful (Jamal, you didn’t make them, point 2 is for you). I just deleted the rest of the story which explains that not everyone who’s eating out is having the time of their lives, exactly. Maybe that’s the only outlet they have for relaxing their minds! Don’t suggest a free walk on the beach – some of us can’t worry enough about the toxic sea water and muggings.
2/ My hunch did come true. And that’s how we learned the deeper wisdom of “let not your charity be known.” I learned the darker side of humans – i.e. when you give them charity, you maybe signaling to them that you “have” and they can “take.” Old-fashioned gimme more begging was just one problems of charity. Not that bad. But our family was recently robbed of a person who we were helping with medical bills and stuff. This is a person to whom we have often offered domestic work, but he wanted to be a bum, and did nothing. A couple of times we forgave his misadventures with our money. An apparently “trusted” person that we knew since he was a child nearly killed us if with nothing than fright recently.
A relative then mentioned that she has stopped giving charity close to home, she gives it anonymously, to distant deserving people. According to her, she has had the taste of gypsies resorting to robbing those who have been foolish enough to help them at their doors.
Tired with shock, I decided to spend an iftaar out with friends at Nando’s. I then came back and read the judgments on this blog – how people who are eating out are somehow sinful.
I cannot explain my feelings. I only hope I am rid soon of being in the city where such minds dwell.
ah moderation. :)
Unpathetic, you missed the point like one of KMB author who’s like my brother.
There’s no judgment here. Neither it was said that author(s) were not involved in charity. I’m clear enough what I said. Discussing issues on a forum which re not taken care by govt and then we ourselves become part of it by sending a wrong messages will not be helpful for the society. That’s what I tried to say.
The truth is people are preaching what they are NOT doing. Which is why they are preaching, and not doing. go figure
Now this is something called which’s judgment :)
Guys, let’s not accuse and attack eachother for once please?
I think the topic of “Charity in Karachi” deserves a seperate post. In my personal view, I’d like to give my money to someone or some organisation which educates and equipes people to take care of themselves and not be dependant on other people. I think this is what our society needs the most. Get someone a job (could be as your driver, gardner, guard etc.) or finance the education of a child (could be your maid’s/gardner’s/driver’s child). Having said that, giving money to the very poor and needy is also important but to the point where they get dependant on it (don’t give money to beggars!). Just my 2 cents.
Adnan,
Sigh, if it makes one more Muslim then go ahead and say it. Khuda Hafiz for now.
* Neena
Khuda Hafiz for now
****
Let me translate for Adnan and his types: she meant Allah Hafiz.
i am all for ramaZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZan
theres no such word like NAMAZ in arabic, SALAAT is the right word, likewise theres no such word like KHUDA in arabic, equivalent word in arabic is RUB.
so how often do we say that i am going to say my maghrib(xyz)SALAAT
it does make sense if you write it ramazan.
Christians translated YOSHUA as JESUS and there are many other words they traslated from HEBREW/GREEK to ROMAN(other european languages)
It doesnt matter if you write it Ramadhan or ramazan, but I would prefer RAMAZAN rather than ramadhan cuz its more adoptable and not alein to our language URDU whereas RAMADHAN doesnt make any sense at all when you converse in URDU.
Neena, forcing others NOT to use arabic words doesn’t declare you credible either :-).
When no one cries over using “July” in Urdu then people shouldn’t create a fuss about Islamic calender too. Just a request otherwise all of you are free to troll as much as you want.
And by the way “Khuda” is a persian term rather Urdu *grin*
And by the way “Khuda” is a persian term rather Urdu *grin*
****
people can always say ‘eishvar hafiz’ if they don’t like Persian words.
By the way, just about a generation ago, ‘aadaab’ was an acceptable greeting. Try that now, and people will think you are an idiot.
Moving away from ‘aadaab’ and insisiting to use ’salam-o-alaikum’ was an earliest indication of fanatical winds blowing in Pakistan. Later, thanks to Zia-ul-Haq, Allah Hafiz was promoted at the expense of good old ‘khuda hafiz’.
@Adnan
u wrote,
And by the way “Khuda” is a persian term rather Urdu *grin*
i can only laught at your mentioned statement.
Urdu is teh language which adopted words from sanskrit, arabic, persian , TURKISH and english.
WORD URDU ITSELF IS ADOPTED BY TURKISH WORD HORDES, HORDES MEANS MULTITUDE/large numbers and thats what urdu means, urdu used be called LASHKARI (language of the multitudes/troops)as muslim forces comprised of ppl who would speak arabic, persian, turkish and sanskrit so they URDU emerged in the army ranks cuz they needed a COMMON LANGUAGE to communicate with each other.
English also adopted the same word as HOARD variant of turkish HORDES.
So if some one say to english speaker that dont use word HOARD as its a turkish word, that native english speaker would give you a BLANK LOOK and nothing else.
I don’t know if Horde is a Turkic word. Today’s Turkish is a member of Turkic family. As I understand, the English word horde is from the Turkic word ‘Urdoo’. In fact, even today in Turkey, you will see names of areas with word ‘Urdoo’ in them. Perhaps, they refer to military areas, like the word Cantonement.
Also, I believe the term Urdu Bazar, now used for describing books bazar, was probably first used for ‘bazar for military people’. Later, probably the Urdu Bazar in Dehli was reduced to just selling books and the name continued in Karachi.
Folks, from now on, start using Malir Urdu and Karachi Urdu instead of Malir Cantt and Karachi Cantt!
Urdu is teh language which adopted words from sanskrit, arabic, persian , TURKISH and english
that was my point. therefore no need to whine about the languages which formed uRdu itself.
*Adnan,
that was my point. therefore no need to whine about the languages which formed uRdu itself.
**** Dil kaa haal toe khudaa (oh sorry, Allah, if you didn’t get it) hee jaantaa hae, but I doubt that was your point. Usually, people like you and Auntie Farhat Hashmi think it is haraam to say Khuda Hafiz, and Allah is the only word for God. In fact, over the years the translation of Kalma has changed in Pakistan from “There is no dod but God” to “There is no god but Allah”.
People like dumbo Farhat Hashmi are propogating the exclusivity of Allah for Muslims and AsSalam-o-alaikum as password for Muslims, when she should know that Arab Christians and Arab Jews both use the word Allah, and Arab Christians and Arab Druze, and all jews use AsSalam-o-alikum too (Hebrew pronounciation is bit different). There is nothing Muslim about using ‘Allah’ and ‘AsSalam-o-Alaikum’.
People like me object to the ruining of our languages (like Urdu, Panjabi etc) by over arabization under the misguided rahnummas like Auntie Hashmi.
You are not going to Jannat (oh sorry, Jannah if you didn’t get it) because you use Allah and not Khuda!
ummm yeah topic kahan say kahan chalay gaya hai?
tried nandos iftari…not bad but was fun due to company and because big fan of nandos…nothing special though…
also pizza hut all u can eat :P reached late so couldn’t find place so came back arnd 7.50 they still let us have the all u can eat….
12-14 slices each we had :D….paisai wasool karnay thay na…in each place i’d say its the company more than the food one enjoys
I don’t agree with all the things I have heard you saying, Balma, but my assumption is mostly you use sarcasm to starkly highlight a point. Am I correct?
But I agree with your “exclusive Allah” symptom that Muslims suffer from – to the point of alienating others from “the message.” Judgment is the prerogative of Allah Hu alone knows the past and the future. Allah – or however any person choose to define that Being – “the matrix,” “higher power,” whatever – by definition of being the Avval and the Akhir, knows how many of us are descendants of barbarians who chose to convert at one time – and how many today can be inspired to have a better faith, or alter themselves.
That’s why it’s crazy to act possessive about Allah – anyone who has read the addresses to Bani Israel for themselves (rather than a magazine Mullah repeat it ad nauseam for them on those Islamic pages) – will know the dangers of the Allah-is-ours mentality. Allah is of no one. No Creator belongs to any of their creations, above which they have absolute powers of creation or destruction be definition.
But its a subject most Muslims fear to comprehend. That is undermining the whole point of being a Muslim.
So I agree with you on this point.
Unpathetic: you are just being funny; mixing “God is ours” mentality with calling God with His own name. I wish you would have read following Quranic verses before you would have passed judgements agianst others.
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.
Quran(7:180)
And every Muslim knows about 99 Names/attributes of Allah.
But I agree with your “exclusive Allah” symptom that Muslims suffer from
Ahem, Someone was cursing here to those who judges others. *grin*
Unapathetic and Adnan Siddiqi,
Bhagwan toom dono’n kee raksha yaa taxi karay.
Mae’n toe yahan junk food say iftaari karnay vaalo’n kaa mazaaq uRaanay aayaa thaa!
Regards,
Balma

On Ramadan deals:
I have also become a fan of PIZZA EXPERTS’ thin crust pizzas. Especially Chicken Alsase. Not sure if they have a Ramadan deal? But they are half the price of Pizza Hut and pretty good. Delivery of order takes 50 minutes on a normal day and sometimes the poor guys forget a drink or an accompaniment. But I enjoy their follies.
If you want to do something good then rememember those of us who are not fortunate enough. The Rotary club that I belong to have been visiting National Institute of Child Health ( next to Jinnah Hospital ) on every eid day and we simply distribute Toys Sweets clothes story books and other stuff to the kids who are hospitalized there. The staff is very helpful and offer all assistance. The emotional high one gets after spending a few hours there is beyond words. We take our children as well to instill from an early age the virtues needed.Infact our children are now more involved than us in this project. Try doing this with your family or freinds or form a group from MBK and visit one of the many Govt Hospitals this eid
