Calling all Musicians in Town:

Portions of this release have been taken from the BBC Website

“THE NEXT BIG THING 2007” – The program is back after last year’s exhilarating run, the BBC’s quest for the best musical talent in the world…and we mean WORLD. BBC WORLD SERVICE and BBC WORLD TELEVISION are looking for the future of music. On 22 October 2007 BBC World Service and the BBC World Television are launching a major global music talent search – THE NEXT BIG THING 2007. They’re scouring the world looking for exciting new music, bands and performers who will shape the future.

This might be a break for the great number of underground bands and artists that are mushrooming around Karachi. “Anyone can enter and it is completely free and unmediated. Forget the big labels and mainstream music business, we’re looking for boldness and brilliance – musical pioneers who really deserve attention.”

Entries last year came from thousands of musicians from over 40 countries and with BBC World Service, the biggest international broadcaster in the world with an audience of 183 million listeners in 33 languages worldwide, the 2007 competition will be the biggest yet. This year BBC World Service will be joined by BBC World Television in the search for the Next Big Thing to expose the new and establish a platform for musicians to create and perform original music.

Last year’s winner, Silva, went on to have a number one hit in her home country Armenia and played the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Geoff Travis founder of Rough Trade who signed The Smiths, Travis, The Strokes and many more, said on behalf of last year’s judges, “We are very glad to have been asked by the BBC to be a part of this. We are astonished at the standard of the entries, we are very very pleasantly surprised.” Head of the jury, music producer William Orbit, enjoyed the competition so much that he is returning in 2007.

As well as taking entries via our online site, BBC World Service will be out on the road, with local events in Mumbai – India, Kingston – Jamaica, Dar es Salaam – Tanzania and Istanbul – Turkey.

The BBC have selected a panel of international music experts including Caspar Llewellyn-Smith, editor of the Observer Music Monthly; Will Hodgkinson, music journalist for Mojo and the Guardian; and Paul Stokes, Features Editor, NME to help choose 5 finalists.

There are just two rules: artists must be unsigned and perform their own original material.

Entries close on 18 November 2007, and finalists will perform for an all-star jury in London in December. One act will be crowned THE NEXT BIG THING 2007 and perform to a live audience of 3000 people at London’s O2 stadium to celebrate BBC World Service’s 75th Anniversary in December, alongside some of the most exciting names in music.

    Salamalikum

With all due respect, are you kidding us? Is this some sort of cruel joke? Not a full day has passed and we are back to our old tricks calling for music, etc. when the janaza for many has not yet taken place? Is there any shame left in us? I’m appalled that you want to advertise a “fun” event today, not to speak about prohibition of music as it is.

This is it, huh? We’ve contemplated enough. We’ve poor in this country by the millions so what’s the matter if a few hundred have perished. Allah save us from this kind of mentality. Sister, housh kay nakhun leejeeyay aur uss waqt say dareeyay jab aag apnay ghar tak pahounch jaeeyay gee.

KBM should take down this post forever and if not then for at least a few days. This is hihgly insensitive. Astaghfirullah

time and time again rabia manages to cum up with the most inappropraite posts at the oddest of times…

even after being reminded several times by the bloggers that the blog is strictly for stuff concerning Karachi, she adamantly continues to write WHATEVER she deems right…

Rabia…honestly, have a blog of ur own n write watever u want to, there…either you havent watched the footage enough times or this was ur attempt to distract the bloggers from the ongoing tirade of yesterday’s event….either way, not a very good timing for such post

are you really this callous or just demented? i have never seen such a fukked up sense of timing in my entire life. what do you suggest we sing and dance about …that 140 poor farmers came out to celebrate a mistaken sense of belonging and got their limbs torn off?

    @Alam I* & @Rabia I*,
Even NYC mourned the deaths after 9/11 and no theatre or broadway musicals were opened next day and there was hardly any talk of fun or entertainment on their media for several days.

    *I = Idiot.

Guys, lets not pretend that any of our lives have stopped. We are still eating our lavish grand dinners. Anyone of you ‘concerned citizens’ bothered contacting the families of the affected? We as a nation are famous for forgetting our history and past. The horrific murder of these 139 men will be forgotten even before we know it. Its tragic.

I remember May 12th killings in Karachi and the higher ups announced the inquiry ‘within 48 hrs’ .. things arent much different now. I dont know what these inquiries commissions do and where do they publish their reports.

Anyways, Allah marnay walon ko Jannat naseeb karay aur unn kay khandano kay liye jaizz rozi ka bandobast karay. Amin.

    >>> because she already got some friends at Starbucks..

I am sure someday in her younger days, your mama has convinced some sabzi wala to give her couple of dhania or bhindi for free, which does not make her a whore or ‘bud chalan’….just a nice woman who takes favors gracefully.

    Thanks

christmas in jamshed town has come before thanksgiving…..

Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming
Cannot cease for the fear of silent nights
Oh how I long for the deep sleep dreaming
    The goddess of imaginary light

In my field of paper flowers
    And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me

    @ALAM

we aint gonna waste costly woods and oil to burn your stinking body, instead we left you in some desert to be consumed by poor hungry animals and then your fossil will turn into valuable FOSSIL FUEL in some miilion of years time, by then your offspring will have EVOLVED into a more INTELLEGENT SPECIE(though i doubt it as according to james watson stupidity is a genetic illness)who would be proud of their BIPED ANCESTRY.

  18. ALAM (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 9:37 am

    @ .!.

    >>> we aint gonna waste costly woods and oil to burn your stinking body

Note that I never asked for burning my body. I agree with u that after death body stinks even those of ur prophets, and burning wood is waste.

  19. .!. (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 9:52 am

    @Alam

    ……burning wood is waste.

SHUSH!!!! there r so many hindus out there, wanna get sued??

hmm..persuming that you are agreeing on the following statement too

    “stupidity is a genetic illness”

  20. Zee (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 10:28 am

@ALAM: Bodies of Prophets do not stink or decay. Please do not talk crap when it comes to Prophets and messengers!

@ALL: If you have a problem with a bunch of us enjoying some music to make our lives easier then you can go to hell. There is nothing wrong with the post. In fact, I think there should be lesser posts regarding the whole PPP drama. Karachites need a break and move on with their lives.

  21. ALAM (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 10:50 am

    >>> SHUSH!!!! there r so many hindus out there, wanna get sued??

do u think i would be more worried baout getting sued by Hindus, or lynched to death by Muslims? :)

  23. Adnan Siddiqi (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 11:11 am

hehe Alam, you are being silly. why would I say naat or Hamd for a non-Muslim?

omar k saath saath tumhara sathyana barhta jarha hay.

    otherwise i will explode

explode after death? is this what atheism teaches you? you continue to amaze me with your utter stupidity. :-)

  24. ALAM (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 11:30 am

    >>> is this what atheism teaches you?

haha…stupid man, atheism does not teach anything. If u can find any Atheism holy book (maybe written in cave?), let me know.

  25. .!. (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 11:43 am

atheism doesnt teach anything but it has created so many false prophets who preached OUT OF THIS WORLD things, like one below,

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0895262762/commentaryonreve

  26. ALAM (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 11:50 am

    >>>atheism doesnt teach anything but it has created so many false prophets

So did Islam. Its another thing, after claiming prophethood, theirs and/or their disciples heads were chopped off

Atheism is like science. There is no prophet or holy personality in science, even not Einstein. Their theories and views are being put to test all the time, even by kids in their school labs. Every word they utter, is subjected to ruthless criticism.

This is very unlike Religions. You draw a cartoon or claim a counter-prophethood, and your risk ur life

  27. .!. (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 11:53 am

    like Haeckle,

Haeckle was one of the earliest evolutionsts, he supported Darwin’s work and darwin wrote one of his famous books inspired by HAEKCLE’s drawings. Both men lived in the same era, Haeckle propogated Darwin’s therories in Germany. He was a lecturer at the basil university where he was accused of creating fake drawings.

    http://www.answersingenesis.org/creation/v18/i2/haeckel.asp

  28. ALAM (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 12:03 pm

So somebody chopped hid head off? He was a liar prophet? whats the point?

Ideas evolve with time, waiting to be explored by ppl. If Einstein or Darwin were not the ones coming up with their theories, someone else might have had. This thinking completely separates Religion from Science. There is no such thing like indispensability of a prophet or god. No one is indispenable in rational thinking process.

oh please all of you get off your high horses and appreciate a good post when you see one. this contest might spell recognition for some richly deserving talent from pakistan—a reason to be hopeful again, to be optimistic again about the chances available and the good things out there in the world.

why is mourning and optimism mutually exclusive anyways? cant you do both? cant you continue to be saddened and yet have hope for other things in life? or do you intend to spend your life livign in dread, shaking your head at what your city has become. why not do something nice for it instead as a way of showing how much you care? 3-day mourning periods and the like are for politicians who want nothign better than to prove that their might can bring a whole nation to its knees. rememberance would be a better way to mourn rather than shuttign down businesses and therefore livelihoods. and you can always discuss the issue in the ample posts giving coverage to it on KMB. lets show some spirit and tolerance please.

  30. Adnan Siddiqi (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 12:49 pm

    atheism does not teach anything
Alam, today you proved that you don’t even have any frikkin idea about Atheism either. As far as your holy book is concerned, i think you haven’t darwin’s book at all. *sigh*

you’re quite boring! go and entertain someone else with your stupidity.

  31. .!. (unregistered) on October 20th, 2007 @ 10:13 pm

    @alam

go man have some fun and when you get time do READ something about evolution theory and other stuff then come and debate over this issue.

Go eat your PORK CHOPS and have a glass of WINE.
