Final Pakistan-South Africa ODI shifted to Lahore

Umar blogged earlier about how the final one-day international match between South Africa and Pakistan was in jeopardy after the blasts last week, and it has now been confirmed that the match will be played in Lahore instead because of those very “security reasons”. I’ve been critical of teams refusing to travel to Karachi on such grounds in the past, but I’ll admit that in the circumstances we’re faced with now it may be too much to expect the South African players to feel comfortable traveling to our parts.

On their part, at least this time South Africa (or perhaps more specifically their skipper Graeme Smith) did at least make some attempts to shed some of the shallow misconceptions they held about Karachi in their last tour to Pakistan. Their 10 day stay here in the early part of the current tour, when they played both the 1st test match and a pre-test warm up game here, will hopefully mean the South African team go back home this time with a better image of Karachi in their minds; an image that embodies our spirit as a resilient and peace craving city, sadly often tortured and victimised by all sorts of groups with vested interests.

I don’t get it. Why Lahore is safer than Karachi? Are there any factors which suggest extremists are after Karachi and are not against foreigners.

Good question Neena. I don’t know the answer for sure, but I suppose it might have something to do with the the more diverse cultural/ethnic dynamic of Karachi as compared with Lahore, though again, this is entirely conjecture.

What do you mean you don’t get it?! They don’t wanna travel to a place where sadly violence takes place every month or two. They wanna stay safe! And could you blame them? No!

Difference between Lahore and Karachi is that you don’t have too many wackos trying to break up the country in Lahore, they actually Like to keep Pakistan together.

So Its safer there because there are no thugs in every corner trying to kill any one who does not agree with them that Pakistan should be split up.

Mohsin …… no 1 in karachi wants to seprate the city from country ……

The government shud however not allow any further political activities in Karachi …. If BB wud have landed in Lahore rather then in Karachi ….
We wud be hosting 3 ODIs :S

Its scares the hell out of me when I read the comments suggesting the split of pakistan. PAKISTAN`S DIVERSITY IS ITS STRENGTH AND ITS BEAUTY.
Cricket? I dont care but I still like to know the score :)

Karachi being the heart of Pakistan economy wise and people wise (donkey wise too!) is prime target for all trouble makers.

With so much density it is very difficult if not impossible to police. Hence every Tom, Dick or Harry (Amjad, Arshad or Shahid in our case) takes advantage from it.

Karachi is not only a dangerous city, but a deadly city.

We wont see Afridi for sure now… But then Zainub will decide to delete this comment, because of her newly found power from the KMB commenting policy

Given its importance in all respects, and the fact that it is inhabited by people from all corners of the country .. I’d even go as far as saying that …

    KARACHI is PAKISTAN

Mohsin, maybe wackoes from Lahore migrated karachi to create all mess.

Karachi is not only a dangerous city in Pakistan. This is unjustice with Karachi. Just a quick views of Karachi http://www.totalfunworld.com/showpics.asp?Catid=2&CN=%20Karchi%20City

I personally feel, Lahore is more safer than karachi. May be baised due to my home city. But i’ve been to karachi many times, even lived for a month but issues are way way to bigger in karachi than any city.

Major issue is corruption of public/politicians as they eat higher %ages of public money while in Pujab they put some 60% of money on public and eat away 40% which creates much of difference.

Ethnic population and high diversity in Karachi is the other major issue. As being financial capital & metropolitan city, it also hosts mafia’s and underground people. You guys knows better about it.

I agree that “Lahore is more safer than karachi” but thats for a common person. Every foreign cricket team (not sure about BD) is provided a security cover similiar to that of the PM. Spectators are not allowed to bring anything inside the stadium. They have to line up outside the venue an hour or two before the match starts. Police closes roads when the teams travel. RSA officials must have witnessed these arrangements during the test match but still …

I’ve lived in Lahore for a while too. There is crime but not like Karachi but still people from all over Pakistan came to Karachi for their livelihood we have sizeable Pathan, Balochi, Seraiki and Bengali population, never seen a Sindhi, Balochi or Bengali in Lahore. I’ve asked few Punjabi migrants about their preference of violent Karachi over peaceful Lahore, they say wages are much higher here and it’s easier to get a job. Karachi is growing but Police force are still hired from outside. Karachi needs to hire its own so law and order situation can be handled by local men and women. People tend to be more careful and accountable when their hometown is involved. Another thing is to raise Police personals wages as par to inflation so nice educated individuals able to join the force. Central government need to realize Karachi is not just another Pakistani city it’s what New York is to US, Tokyo is to Japan and Mumbai is to India. Karachi needs money and resources to run effectively. Once central government learns this all Pakistan will flourishes, otherwise we keep fights demons among us who are destroying whole Pakistan for us.

Simple, all terrorists want to destroy the backbone of Pakistan and the backbone is not LAHORE, the whole world knows its KARACHI, the great port city!

    May Allah bless Karachi!

Karachi has a terrible image problem due to all the violence that goes on there amongst the various political parties. So im not surprised that south africa dont feel safe there. Heck, even i dont feel safe there when i visit pakistan.

  19. Mohsin (unregistered) on October 26th, 2007 @ 1:56 am

    I 100% agree with KADS

I love the city, but hate going there because I just don’t feel safe, plus the fact that no one has any civic pride and uses the city as their own personal garbage dump.

Are KHI vs LHE comments relevant to this post?

Why don’t we focus on why didn’t Karachi get this match rather than banging our heads on why Lahore gained it…! :|

Someone from Karachi should sue PPP/Benazir.

We don’t need any match, what we need is peace!

    Rock on Karachihites!

I think, as a matter of principle, Altaf bhai should order blowing up of the Lahore match. Enough is enough. If we can’t get this, u won’t either.

in todays match pakistan faced a very humiliating defeat…thankgod they will not be able to depress the already disturbed and traumatized lovely people of karachi….making mahummad yusuf to break the contract with the indian league was a very bad decision of the board….now we can also predict the performance of the team on indian tour….

Aa ay ho abhi khelo toh sahi janney ki baatein …..
