Election Watch : NA-245 / Karachi – VII

http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/images/2008/02/na-245-thumb.jpgThe seventh seat for the Election Watch Series is NA-245 Karachi VII. We have previously covered NA-239, NA-240, NA-241, NA-242, NA-243 & NA-244

The constituency NA-245 consists of North Nazimabad, all towns in the North Nazimabad, Buffer Zone, some areas of North Karachi, and part of Nazimabad, including Bara Maidan, and Paposh Nagar.

Looking into the previous record of the general elections, one realises that of the five contests since 1988, the Haq Parast candidate Kunwar Khalid Yunus secured the highest number of votes in the four elections as the 1993 elections were boycotted by the Muttahida. In 1993, the MQM boycotted the NA elections and Dost Mohammad Faizi won by grabbing 17,058 votes. Kunwar Khalid Yunus of Haq Parast Group swept the NA-186 seat by getting 90,497 votes in 1990 general elections while Prof Ghafoor Ahmed of IJI secured 21,254 votes. In 1988, the MQM fielded Kunwar Khalid Yunus, who got elected with 87,919 votes, he was followed by Prof Ghafoor Ahmed of the IJI, who obtained 22,805 – DAWN

Take the poll

Free Poll by Blog Flux2008 Elections: Total number of Registered Voters 344,004 (184,802 Male & 159,202 Female). The four candidates up for elections are:

  1. Farhat Khan (MQM)
  2. M. Aslam Khan Khattak (PML-N)
  3. Qazi Muhammad Bashir (PPP)
  4. Jumma Khan Babar (ANP)

2002 Elections: In the 2002 elections there were 255,754 Registered Voters in NA-245 of which 40.5% polled that day (103,587). The candidates were

  1. Kanwer Khalid Younus (MQM) – 51696
  2. Syed Munawwar Hassan (MMA) – 41947
  3. Eng. Muhammad Haseen (PPPP) – 3232
  4. Naheed Afzal Khan Advocate (PTI) – 2883
  5. Hameedullah Khan (PML-N) – 1182

Prediction:MQM again can be predicated to take this seat, MMA with Syed Munawar Hassan gave a good fight loosing by only 10,000 votes I think this time around without Jamaat Islami in the running MQM has a clear shot to victory. My guesstimate goes to MQM is 6-1 for the seats up till now, with only NA-239 going towards PPP. Hence the predicted winner should be Farhat Khan of MQM

I voted against mqm all through from this const except for I guess in 1992. I think Jamat would have given mqm real tough time but they are boycotting elections on the direction of musharraf so that mqm can be rewarded for its unrelenting support for him. Bottom line I can tell you that Jamat leadership is the biggest ploy for establishment. Feel bad for their current and ex supporters.

    Doctor:
I understand North Nazimabad is the most educated part of Karachi, but one thing you have to understand is that it doesn’t take much to be the most educated part of Karachi. Also, NN is not the only part of NA 245, but it also includes NK and Naz.
I would love to see MQM loose this seat in my ‘abai’ neighborhood, but I do not think it is happening.
