National Songs & Elections

As the 18th day of February 2008 comes closer, the noise of campaign songs in the city is getting higher and higher. Over the weekend, it was the loudest – from campaign camps to rally cars these party songs (often a blatant copy of one another or from films of yesteryears) seem to be omni present in the city.

Last night was no different except that I was almost shocked in reflex at a point where I think I had heard a famous national song being played in the air. It felt extra-ordinary. But the bliss was not to last long as it turned out to be just the tune of that national song copied by a party song.

Granted that this is a season for party promotion but since its all about Pakistan’s General Elections, wont it be a good idea to let the national songs have some place in the respective campaigns of party politics?

Boy that is a very intellectual topic now.

Let’s see, hmmm, surprisingly Pakistan is not up for election, but rather it’s political parties are. So I guess we could leave out the national songs.

But on the other hand why not play them. Who gives a damn?

Personally I would love if they blared out Rihanna instead.

    *****************

THERE ARE NO NATIONAL SONGS DURING THE WHOLE ELECTION CAMPAIGN AND THE REASON IS THAT OUR POLITICANS SIMPLY DONT CARE, ALL THEY CARE IS GETTING THEMSELVES ELECTED AT ANY COST

This National Song mania was started by Zia-ul-Haque propaganda machine, who sired one song after another and at times it looked like the whole country was running on songs, nothing positive was happening. Nations around the world stick to one or two, National Anthem being the primary one, by the way how many of us know the anthem by heart?

For me when it comes to patriotic songs, there shouldn’t be a deliberate attempt to churn them out in numbers for propaganda or election campaigns. The songs we remember are those which are written in a moment of inspiration, complimented by skilful composition and heart warming rendition. So if a bunch of artists get inspired and come up with something that you can relate to, then enjoy it, please don’t give this task to the politicians.
