@Balma- I do not like the word "different" here. To me it is more like the author decided to write the book in several steps or chapters. Different is what gets us into trouble and gives the opportunity to create mischief and differences where none existed. IMHO

@Kabirdas - Firstly nothing comes easy and secondly there are no easy answers or quick fix solutions. Education, education and eduction en mass and of the masses at an acceptable international standard is the first thing that comes to my mind.

Concentrated effort by both government and private sectors to eradicate illiteracy.

Population control on war footing.

Safety and security, to create a stable environment for inflow of foreign investments. More investments, more industry and business means more jobs.

Alleviation of poverty will negate many social evils and religious taboos that we nurture.

Better health care at all levels.

The need of the hour is for the rational minded scholars and teachers, nay for all of us including me, to come forward and dispel facts from fiction. Set examples of tolerance and kindness. Clearly identify those that use or rather misuse religion for ulterior purposes, no matter who they are or how popular they maybe.

When we are healthy in mind, spirit and in body is when we will have more engrossing preoccupations that murdering the weak.

I am sure people far more qualified than me can suggest better ways for the same. The thing is, are we as a nation ready to seek help? Thereby accepting that we have failed in our old set ways?

Good. You two seem to have idientified the problem. The next question can be what is the solution to this problem. I mean the problem of intolerance for the others faith and view point. Some kind of solution which can be implemented also with least bit of effort and trouble.

It may be relevant to quote here a part of the speech of the founder of this nation in the first Constituent Assembly of Pakistan which goes as follows:

"If we want to make this great State of Pakistan happy and prosperous we should wholly and solely concentrate on the well-being of the people, and especially of the masses and the poor... you are free- you are free to go to your temples mosques or any other place of worship in this state of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion, caste or creed that has nothing to do with the business of the state... in due course of time Hindus will cease to be Hindus and Muslims will cease to be Muslims- not in a religious sense for that is the personal faith of an individual- but in a political sense as citizens of one state."

You are not exactly right here. They do actually teach something in these mad-rassahs, just like a snake charmer entices the cobra with his rhythm, they teach their students to rock back and forth - vigorously. :)

ACtually, I agree with you.
The old Madrassahs (when they were the only school in towns) used to teach maths, philosophy, and most importantly logic. Yes, Logic / manteq.
I don't think the so called madrassahs today actually teach anything intelligent these days. From the likes of Muhammad Adnan Siddiqi and Muhammad IUnknow, it is quite obvious that logic is not being taught at any school in Pakistan - madrassah or no madrassah!

'Amazing may not be the right word for their comments. Appaling is more like it. Don't blame Pakistani colleges for their warped thinking. They might not have been to one. May be they are the product of some Maddrassa. But then it may be unfair to generalize and blame all Maddrassas for instilling this kind of thinking in their students. May be there are some who do teach their students: Kill in the name of Allah.

Amazing comments by Adnan Siddiqi and Iunknown.
We don't need colleges in Pakistan. It does not make a difference.
