I went to this zoo around 16 years back when I was here for Vacations ( I used to live abroad),

I have no memory of the place, but this post has given me a desire to visit it again ! :D

Last time I went in to see this (and the only time) was 35 years ago, there was this hijRaa type person acting like a woman. Even as a kid I could tell that he was talking dirty, because I remember my mother and her neighborhood friend (bengali neighbor) getting annoyed.
But, the classic thing during that trip to the Gandhi Garden was our neighborhood aunti, who was Bengali, pointing to a little bird and saying...baazi, voh uloo kaa paThaa daikhyae.
And us brothers were all excited that ...auntie nay gaali dee hae, auntie nay gaali dee hae.... Moral of the story: gaali in one language is a normal statement in another. This was a couple of years after Bhutto, Yahya, with the help of Jamat-e-Islami and army had destroyed Pakistan....Pretty soon, bengali auntie with our other Bengali neighbors were sent off to a temporary shaamiaanaa in our neighborhood to be sent to the erstwhile East Pakistan. Their place was taken over by the hordes of Biharis and other Urdu speakers who were travelling in the other direction from Bangladesh.
Time flies.

I have been to Gandhi Garden couple of times lately. Though it has much fewer animals, the place really looks much nicer, cleaner, and greener.
When my goochi poochi was feeding the ducks, I thought to myself that many many decades ago probably my father thought I was a goochi poochi too when he saw me feeding the same ducks in the same pond.
There was no haathi though!
