Not so creative, are we?

When I first saw Zong’s ad, I was really fascinated with the brand and liked their campaign style and execution. I even went to the extent of finding out which company made this for China Mobile; its Adetude. However, a friend of mine pointed out a video which opened my eyes. Their TVC is a total rip-off of Dolphin Telecommunication Provider–an old UK-based company–which initiated with specific Services to Corporate Sector. See for yourself:

So, are we that dry in coming up with creative ideas that sell?

Its a very common idea and can be seen in music videos, bbc etc. I thought CM had an inhouse department for all this.

i have seen a similar theme in CNN’s promo as well but still i would give full credit to Zong’s media team for executing this so nicely

You guys know what Balma’s thinking is on such lack of creativity….sure, here it is again…
Generation dur generation of cousin marriages have affected creativity among desi Muslims.

Here is what Blama would say on this: Stop cousin marriages in Pakistan. Legal ban…total paabandee…..mukammal restriction….
    blah blah blah….

Of course Pakistanis are chores and cheaters doesn’t help either when it comes to creating something of their own. Aavay kaa aavaa kharaab hae.

  4. Nadir (nadir) on May 7th, 2008 @ 10:26 pm

here is what ‘nadir’ would say about comments from ‘balma’

I take it as a personal offense, You have no right to say Pakistanis are cheaters and ‘chore’, you have no right to generalize "Pakistani" awam.

Let me ask you, are you one of those generations? Seems like you have been a target of such a family mishap? Secondly why should there be a ban on cousin marriages, its totally and hundred percent allowed in our religion. What if I’m in love with my cousin, who the hell is the stupid government to restrict me from marrying?

and let me point out, you accuse Pakistani as chore, are you not one? Or are you one of those who "pretend" to be a "burger from amreeca" or one of those who are ashamed of their own identity and deny being Pakistani while being one?

And for your kind information, its CHINA MOBILE, it is probably administered from China.

(FYI: I’m a designer and I base my career on creating things on my own, and I’d play my part to portray myself ‘from Pakistan’ wherever and whenever possible.)

though balma’s starting comments are wrong but his last para is a bitter truth

I dont know why anyone is offended by his last para. Its simple a true picture. This is indeed a thieves nation , and i mean it.

me being a pakistan can critisize ourselves cant i. the ones that say they are creative especially these new breed brand managers are the most dishonest cheats one can find. yes they are creative cause they find ways to rip of ads, shows, promos, concepts and all from the world can present it as there own. how dishonest and typical pakistani.sad

I fully support balma in his stance against this cousin marriage thing. In the western world (which we all so dote on) such a thing would be called incest (beg your pardon on that….but it is widely accepted like that), and its fully legal here! Religion does not take into account the genetic hazards associated with such marriages, probability of genetically transferred diseases multiplied and intelligence on the decline! Religion for defense…always is the case….one must also take facts into account, especially when they are medically proven!

Apart from the that, this video may not be a victim of this consanguinity!

  11. balma on May 8th, 2008 @ 7:56 am

Here is Mufti Balma’s verdict on this religion issue.
Islam does not ban someone from jumping Habib Bank Plaza. People are free to decide whether to jump from the top of the building. What will happen if one does that?

Similarly, Muslims are not barred from drinking water. But, what will happen if Nader or Zenith drink 50 glasses of water in 5 hours?

Similarly, Islam does not ban cousin marriages. But, can someone check with genetic scientists on what happens if nasal dur nasal people marry within cousins?

And, Nadir, as far as your falling in love with your cousin (I assume cousin sister) is conerned, this is all what I have to say….pyaar to gadhee (female donkey) say bhee h jaataa hae!

  12. salmakhan on May 8th, 2008 @ 8:34 am

But, can someone check with genetic scientists on what happens if nasal dur nasal people marry within cousins?
Agreed with balma(Mostly i dont like his/her bukwaas)

  13. Tariq Khanani (tariqkhanani) on May 8th, 2008 @ 10:38 am

Consanguine marriages (blood-related) do increase the chances of genetic diseases being transfered (best e.g. Thalassemia which is spreading like hell in our society) but unrelated couples also end up spreading genetic disease, but the chances are less.

balma, yr posts are generally interesting, but comments from yr last post.

"And, Nadir, as far as your falling in love with your cousin (I assume cousin sister) is conerned, this is all what I have to say….pyaar to gadhee (female donkey) say bhee h jaataa hae!"

are Derogatory to say the least.

do u think this falls under the criteria of "freedom of expression" ?

  15. Nadir (nadir) on May 8th, 2008 @ 1:15 pm

I really don’t care about what you say, this post is shifting its track to something not-so-pleasant. I’d not comment on it, BUT would like to advice "Mr. Fake Balma wannabe dumb" to do just a little tap to get something out from some of the "BASIC" teaching of Islam.

"jumping Habib Bank Plaza." – Khud kushi (suicide) is HARAAM (Prohibited)

"50 glasses of water in 5 hours?" – Islam teaches moderation every where and always.

"genetic scientists on what happens if nasal dur nasal people marry within cousins?" – I’m afraid, I have to agree on this with you. I can see the hazardous outcome on you. I feel sorry for you :(

  16. Afreen (afreen) on May 8th, 2008 @ 1:58 pm

Let’s get back to the topic of creativity and our filching agencies rather than wedding do-s and don’t-s. Let’s not drag in Islam or any other religion for that matter here because with varied minds and believes, we will only end up mistreating it.

  17. Adnan Siddiqi (adnansiddiqi) on May 8th, 2008 @ 2:06 pm

Thanks Afreen you finally chimed in.

balma and his illogical theories .. *sigh*

@Nadir: He’s an atheist. *nuff said*

  18. faylasuf on May 8th, 2008 @ 4:32 pm

its not bout the lack of creativity, Sum of us just prefer the chota rasta.

having said that, i dont intend to communicate that Zong add is or is not original/creativ.

  19. balma on May 8th, 2008 @ 8:29 pm

Muhammad Adnan Siddiqi: Thanks for your insightful tid bits. NOT!

Nadir: Khudkushee may be haram, but the act of jumping from a hill, Habib Bank Plaza, or a desk in school is not haram. That was my point. Cousin marriages may not be haram, but nasal kushee should be!

Also, if Islam teaches moderation (and this is like openning a pandora box), when it comes to drinking 50 glasses in 5 hours, wouldn’t same logic apply to cousin marriages generation after generation….what about moderation here?

Vaah, Afreen, shaabaash, —- you missed the whole point here — that cousin marriages are contributing to the lack of creativity among desi Muslims….

And, Nadir, one more thing: when you were talking about falling in love with your cousin, you meant female cousin – right?

finally, Faylasuf: that is an Urdu muhaavarah. These days most people are speaking / writing tooti-phooTi english in Urdu, so I am not surprised that many people don’t know Urdu muhavaraahs.

  21. Adnan Siddiqi (adnansiddiqi) on May 8th, 2008 @ 10:17 pm

According to theory of Reverend Balma Chudhary, Indians who mostly come up with creative Ads never marry with their cousins so Asians(Including Pakistanis,Indians and Bangalis) within USoA who played major role in the advancement of US in field of science. According to this source ,California allows cousin marriage, it means most of IT companies in Cali ain’t creative(as per Balma’s theory).

Balma Chudhary, with reference to your Zoo thread, I assume you are around 40 years old. if some of your "beloved" cousin rejected you due to your insanity and left your "Randwa" for whole life then it doesn’t mean all cousins are bad. The error is in you so try to fix it our rather throwing up your frustration here and there.

  22. balma on May 9th, 2008 @ 10:24 am

    Muhammad Adnan Siddiqi,
Does your mother know the kind of language you use on KMB? More importantly, does any of your cousin sister’s mother / father know about your language – abay, koee apnee laRkee nahee’n dae gaa!

Regarding your post, which is very cryptic, I don’t know what you are trying to say, but Indians (and I guess you meant Hindus) – I have met at least one Hindu girl (15 years later I must refer to her as a woman :-) ) from UP once who was married to her first cousin for a while.

While first cousin marriages are not so common among Hindus, they have a similar problem when it comes to their preferene for their own caste, zaat, paat, village, zip code. So there gene pool some times is very restricted.

Similarly, Ismalies in Pakistan and India, Parsis (Zorastrians), Bohris, Jews, people in Iceland, even when they are not marrying their first cousins, when marrying within their community are limited to their small communities and this can lead to genetic problems. May be somebody with better knowledge can explain this better.

Mohammad, US is a free country, and like Islam gives people a choice…most of the time. Many states in the US have cousin marriages illegal.

BTW, since you mentioned California, should we give equal rights to gay baradari in Pakistan as well? Should alcohol be freely available too?

If you had read my Gandhi Garden post carefully, you wouldn’t have drawn the conclusion you did. But I have to admit this that you know your math!

  23. faylasuf on May 9th, 2008 @ 12:12 pm

balma u wanted to say "tooti-phooTi english in Urdu" or "tooti-phooTi Urdu in english" ?

btw i do know this urdu mahavra n plenty more, point is that we never add the translation of "female donkey" with it.

n yea since your post on 8th may 8:29 pm till the last post at 9:24 am today, keepin in view what you hav already said bout any one who has tried to oppose u, i cudnt find the offensiv in ne post made by Adnan. should i take it that the word randwa has offended you?

  27. Adnan Siddiqi (adnansiddiqi) on May 9th, 2008 @ 6:19 pm

Reverend Balma Chudhary, I used the language which you can easily decrypt so don’t whine If I am behaving same. thanks for getting worried about my future and life partner. Unfortunately(or fortunately), I am already in relation with someone.

As usual you started diverting the topic, when I gave you Cali’s example ,you brought gays. Now when the topic (by you) was cousin marriage and creativity then you should stick on it rather jumping here and there.

Let’s close this chapter for good. I get convinced that Pakistan faced 1st Martial law due to conflict between a dictator and his wife since both were cousins and were unable to figure out what was he going to do with country.

I also get convinced that Yahya and Co along with Army splitted Pakistan into due to cousin marriage. Nawaz and Benazir looted country and messed with it because they got married with respective cousins. altaf hussain destroyed Karachi after getting married with his cousin Faiza Gabool. Today Pakistan has been facing economic crisis due to Shaukat Aziz who were in relation with a cousin hence unable to make a good policy for Pakistan. We lost kargil due to cousin marriage. PML(Q) got defeated due to two cousins(Shujat and Elahi). you can figure out relation between them.

In short every problem in Pakistan is due to cousin marriage. We are convinced, agreed! Atleast I am. Now shall we move on and can witness some other talent of yours? it’s quite boring hearing same rant again and again. Bring some creativity in yourself and I think you could because I assume your mother didn’t marry her cousin hence you are creative.
