7th Lux Style Awards Highlights
One hears so much hoopla these days whenever something controversial happens. Financial situation has gotten worse, many banks are rumoured to be closing down and cutting down operations, while commodity prices are reaching new highs. A lot of budget cuts are happening in case of brands, cancellation of campaigns, concerts and what not.
It was a high time that an event happened to shake this town a bit. Seventh Lux Style Awards did just that. Shook up some people and created lots of controversies.
LSA was postponed in August to be held in Karachi at the DHA Golf Club on 29th Oct, 08, with much razzmatazz and security precautions. Whatever and however the event was organized, one has to give credit to the brand for going ahead with the event even when every head in the industry was going this way and that.
I’ll steer away from the controversy wagon about who wore what and said what. That’s just an industry thing and happens all the time (e.g. Gia going bald). What I will review on however is: how I was blown away by the performance of Reshma,–a very well known Punjabi folk singer–Atif Aslam and Shehzad Roy. Their fusion performance received a resounding round of applause. Reshma also received the Lifetime Achievement Award and candidly accepted the fact that she could not speak English and would prefer commenting in Punjabi.
Yes, there were lulling minutes, when the power went down; heck, it’s Karachi after all! At least the audience didn’t have to wait for the ceremony to start for hours. Shaan and Ali Azmat did fitting anchoring of the show along their female cohorts. And for the first time, students from NAPA and NCA were recognized and four outstanding students (two each from NAPA and NCA) were awarded Unilever Scholarships.

It turned out to be a big turn-off!!!!
wah ge wah, BRAVO,
People are living with no houses, Kids are crying/dying in cold, due to recent Earthquake, and here ……….
I always think about this that if my arm is bleading, my eye have problem, how can I enjoy the Dance and Music ??????????????????
I hope educated and open mind people of Karachi would understand what I write here….
hhhhhmmmmm enjoy
wkhang, it’s a fact that sorrow and happiness are part and parcel of life. They go hand in hand. If we keep mourning and lamenting all the time, we would stop living. People of Karachi are lively and would rock on music with the same pace as they came hoarding the PAF museum when Earthquake relief was in process. Even now many of us are doing their own share of helping and creating social awareness. One just has to be diverse.
I am not sure about any thing any more; there is so much confusion around. I am not sure when to be happy and when to feel sorrow. Every thing is so superficial & cosmetic, without essence and soul….…..notions like good and evil, right n wrong have lost their meaning, nothing matters any more. Every thing seems grey to me…..the beliefs and ideologies that I grew up with seems obsolete n outdated now, Again I am not sure if it’s the dilemma of this age that we are caught in the middle of two extremes where none has any respect and regard for each other…….
@ Afreen, Afreen hay bhy,
wkhang, it’s a fact that sorrow and happiness are part and parcel of life. They go hand in hand……
Hhhhmmm nice wording to put all together but for some reason inside me cant make me belief your explanation/defination, I think my inner perosn is still alive he cant let me do dance in one room and cant let me cry into other room at the same house…..
Its just like in your neighours few people died, but I will keep playing music, dance and keep rocking …..
I am AGREED with human01, as per him:
" Every thing is so superficial & cosmetic, without essence and soul….…..notions like good and evil, right n wrong have lost their meaning, nothing matters any more ",
what a tragedy …..
Wakeup Afreen before its get too late….
bye the way what is Lux Style Awards ????
Any award is for EDHI ? : (,
human01, there is no need to be confused or hopeless. Whatever you believe in, stick to them. Learn from your environment and people surrounding you but preserve your judgment and objectivity.
wkhang, I am awake, thank you very much. I simply covered an event related to Karachi, which was not a dance party but about recognizing talent of the people of a particular industry. Read through to NAPA and NCA if you missed it. Also, stop advertising your blog here. If anyone’s interested they could get a link from your profile.
In case of Edhi, do you think he is not known and highly revered for the work he has been continuously doing? Everyday he is given awards in the form of people being saved. Ref:http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0714/p01s02-wosc.html
Okay Afreen, we are good now same page,,,, but please do give coverage on the earthquake also…. : )
Hey Afreen, could you (or anyone else) please upload that RESHMA part of the party ? Or is there a URL ?
MB, videos are not available yet, pics are though. They’ll be released in a week most probably. Will post as soon as I get them.
I am waiting for those pictures, would like to see what did happend into that 7th Lux Style Awards,
How much money have been spent ?
How much they had FUN ?
How much Electricity, Food and time used ?
How many singers performed ?
Wkhang – you raised some important points and forced me to the years when I was banned from this very website during my graduation years for raising similar sentiments – although, I was a bit harsher then you.
Human01, whatelse could I say? You said it all! Great – Great!
Yaar Mujhay Tu Sharam Aatee Hai seriously! Appnay aap say and there’s this feeling of guilt after looking at the two ends of our society – the difference between two classes has seriously broaden to an extinct where something has to be done on urgent basis.
Yaar – I will prorably come up with point sometime later with what you wrote but on LUX STYLE AWARDS – what I heard is that the multi-national spend around – Rs.60-100 million – easy and they put the money into there “marketing expenses” to save “taxes” – unfortunately, this is how the MN’s works in the land of unpure!
I think such events should take place to show the world that our entertainment industry is going places
Barister sahib and wkhan I am with you guys
Lets get out on the road and raise voice against all that jazz, Lets start complaining about the adv budgets all these giants have.. MNCs and specifically MNOs ..
therz a lot to be done when u start thinking my friend.
Today..You dont have many industries which are growing in this country of ours, media is an exception and the boom is a reality. LSA is part of a strategy by Uni-Lever, and its not simply a party so to speak. Ppl from the entertainment industry who have worked hard (lets not go into the debate of what they should be doing or what they were doing, lets just consider them as professionals) are recognized for their efforts(lets not go into the debate of should and could).
This event was actually planned to be staged abroad, but the plan was shelved, you know the reason? The gist of official statement from Uni lever was that they don’t wish to spend too much money and stage a show when country is in such a state of unrest. But it was a turn down for those who were nominated and eventually the event took place.
Has any one ever questioned the annual dinners/parties that are celebrated in companies to award better performing individuals?
Ok at the end lets ban LSA..Lets start charity from home, lets throw away that Stereo system, lets sell all those TV sets, hi fi home theater systems, cell phones… lets change the imported four wheelers, lets ride a bike, lets take a bus, lets pool in and commute in groups rather then driving alone, lets take off that designer watch and shoes and those branded clothes.
Lets turn off the pc and save sum electricity…
P.S. I am not part of Uni-lever or any MNC/MNO for that matter so nothing personal here ;)
