This is a great change..especially for the most struggled people of our society. I just hope our government realizes that not only was most of the population here reluctant to the new and unaffordable petrol prices but also cannot live with the sky high prices on food! People are dying of hunger!

Good News which is basically a blessing in disguise is that the IMF is forcing the GoP to impose an Agriculture Tax – if IMF could somehow force the government to do that: we are talking about additional billions …right now the major chunk of revenues comes from indirect taxes and hardly 1-2% of Pakistani’s pay their Income Taxes (91% of last years Income Tax came from Karachi alone) so it would be great if government diverts from indirect taxes to a more conventional form of direct taxation…

The government is still making Rs. 28 per liter on Petrol and Rs. 9 per liter on Diesel as Petroleum Development Levy (PDL).

If PDL is passed on to the consumers, they we truly get into zero subsidy mode. Right now, consumers are subsiding the government, and by a big margin!

90% of the traffic in Karachi comprises of small vehicles.. 1000 cc or less..bikes and tangas, and rickshaws on two stroke engines. Somehow i am not convinced pollution is our biggest problem, making it back home alive may be. Add to that the major switchover by all and sundry to cng and we got a pretty good emission rate going as well

Its a good initiative by government. Now peoples can feel that they are being cared. But, I am afraid that the prices will go up again as soon as we get loan from IMF.

It's my personal opinion. Do correct me if you think I am wrong.

Curtailing petrol prices will definitely help in easing the financial burden of middle and lower class in our society but on other hand if we reduce our dependency on imported petroleum then it will also help in reducing our nation’s carbon foot print on the environment and will save much needed foreign exchange.

I urge everyone to start carpooling to work and elsewhere. Driving a smaller engine car does not help, one need to ascertain the carbon emission level by vehicle they use. My car (having 5.6 ltr engine) emit less carbon then a Carolla or Civic. We all need to keep our cars in good condition by getting them properly serviced and keeping the engines well tuned.

I apologize for deviating from the post’s topic, but I guess this is the right place to express my thoughts.

Previous post: Greener Karachi Campaign - "Join and lend a hand in helping making Karachi cleaner, greener and healthier."

This post: Long drives possible again - "I sincerely hope that the roads of this city of lights will be full of cars at night again."

Does anyone else see the irony here?
