New Decoration pieces on Shahrah-e-Faisal

On Shahrai Faisal

These contraptions have popped up at two locations on Shahrah-e-Faisal - any guesses what they are meant to represent or might we suspect this to be some sort of a marketing campaign

whatevr it is.. it clearly renders the pavement useles.. very evident in the photograph!!! it cld have definitly been constructed in the empty space at the back!

it looks more like a display case – definitely not a random occurrence as an identical structure is placed on Shahrah-e-Faisal in front of CDC house – – shell pump near Shahrai Qadeen bridge

I wonder when some one might decide to drop by or some creative genius walks up to the structure and strips it all out for good fire wood LOL

  6. kaami on November 20th, 2008 @ 11:13 pm

@janeeta so far it looks a very bad idea. Let’s see how it unfolds.

  7. saadshah on November 21st, 2008 @ 12:27 am

it jus might be ‘welcome to…’blah blah town board!

  8. barristerakc on November 21st, 2008 @ 6:51 am

Ah! This is close to my office – it looks like one of rowdy, sissy Ameen Guljee’s ugly sculpture! Total waste of money………

  9. barristerakc on November 21st, 2008 @ 6:52 am

even the unwanted cows props in NYC & Barcleona are worth it then this ugly sh**!

  10. human01 on November 21st, 2008 @ 9:31 am

It would be a lot more valuable & more economical, if they planted trees instead of this abstract what ever.

  11. glaxzy on November 21st, 2008 @ 11:47 pm

Janeeta seems to be right, I also think it is for the upcoming IDEAS 2008 event at Expo center.

  12. kanchan123 on November 22nd, 2008 @ 1:41 am

well, maybe it is for some event, but we have to accept that it is not very appealing to the eye. And i being a design student would really want to say, that whoever is the incharge of this, should have atleast hired some art or design student from the Karachi city, so that something would have been created keeping in mind the mindset of Karachites. Because really, i mean people dont respond to such flat, non-communicating structures, that they just feel confused about. Adding on sculptures to the city scape is not bad, but then they just have to be very very smartly placed!

  13. zeeshan on November 22nd, 2008 @ 8:03 am

I don’t know who did that. CDGK or all the other bosses that run SF and other parts of the city but this looks PATHETIC!

  14. sarari on November 22nd, 2008 @ 10:43 pm

i totally agree with kanchan!! but i think that the structure is incomplete. Dimension wise i agree its not very appealing but if it is specifically done for some marketing campaign, which i think is the motive, then we should wait to see the complete picture. At times we jump to conclusions when we dont know the marketing perspective.
But one thing i would appreciate about CDGK that atleast they are doing something to decorate the city, otherwise there was no concept of structures and beautification. And now if we look at karachi city, there is a drastic change and it is just not limited to few areas. All over the city, go to defence, clifton, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad or any areas you would see spaces utilized through structures, fountains, greenery etc. which is adding beautification to the city.

  15. farah08 on November 24th, 2008 @ 11:10 pm

In response to ‘sarari’ who said "…i think that the structure is incomplete. Dimension wise i agree its not very appealing but if it is specifically done for some…" i agree with you there sarari, the structure in my opinion is incomplete, it’s waiting for a sign that says ‘TOILET’ and ofcourse it’s ‘specifically done for..’ some reason, :P public toilet. How else can we reason about the existence of this unappealing monstrosity, that when first viewed seemed as if some people threw their furniture out but no wait! on second thoughts, maybe the city govt is making public toilets right on the edge of a sidewalk. :P morbid joke if you’re a design student. sorry kanchan. but i can relate to you too. ;)

  16. saadshah on November 25th, 2008 @ 1:10 am

maybe its a new design for a bus stop :o
each niche for an individual to sit n wait :D:D

  17. farah08 on November 25th, 2008 @ 8:17 pm

In response to saadshah–> haha this is getting funnier by the minute. :P i like your sense of ‘space’ :P heh. btw today, i noticed it has those hideously designed stickers that proclaim its ‘ideas 2008’ not once and in one place but TWICE! one on the forehead of this thing and one smack in the middle, ‘heart of the monstrosity’ so to speak :P i mean now i really rea hahaha elly get the idea that its ‘IDEAS…..2008’ :P. i still cant decide though whats the worst, the sticker or the thing itself? :P oh btw, all the artists and designers out there. it’s dadaism again :P

  18. muaz99 on November 26th, 2008 @ 3:26 pm

In response to farah08…i dont think its dadaism or a bus stop for that matter, if its just from one man at a time well then thats a different story. i believe that its an open canvas for karachi-ites to let there feelings be displayed on it to the world. if it was me i would go and throw a ‘pan ke peek’ on it to give it a more local feel. though i believen i wouldnt be the first one to do it but i can always gave in my share of feeling to show to the world.or maybe be farah08 or saad could share my enthusiasm and let out their feelings as well =>…..

  19. hussainzahid007 on November 26th, 2008 @ 3:32 pm

In response to muaz99. dont worry muaz99 if ur having trouble being the first one i can help u with that. i do have a lot of feelings and emotions that i want to share with the world and if not the world atleast the locals. by the way i think the pan ke peek wala idea is perhaps the most original thing i have heard in a long time. hahaha. maybe u can tell me which pan to have before i peekofy ;)

  20. ahmedaleem on November 26th, 2008 @ 3:39 pm

In response to hussainzahid007–> dude rock on. but i wana be the first one and i even know wht pan to have ;P hahaha ‘double sada light house jhonny walker bareek chalia’ try saying that really fast, it almost becomes a tongue twister. imagine half of karachi going on to shahrah-e-faisal and throwing pan ke peek at it. that would be soo kool yaar. we might make it into guiness books of records ->

  21. madihahussain01 on November 26th, 2008 @ 3:46 pm

In response to Muaz99, hussainzahid007 and ahmedaleem—> eww dude! you guys are sick! and i don’t mean it in just one way. It’s coz of people like you that pakistan is in the state its in right now.:P not funny. get a life.
i happen to think that ok maybe the ‘thing’ thats put up isnt the best piece of art that we have seen but at least the city govt. tried to make a life size poster/sculpture for ideas2008. its a huge step for karachi and any form of design sensibility or art that might exist here. be thankful and stop being overly critical. *peace*

  22. zain420 on November 26th, 2008 @ 3:50 pm

in response to madihahussain01–> oh come on you’re such a spoil sport. its not as if we are actually going to go and peekofy there, wats the harm in weaving fantasies :D muaahaha. i am in complete agreement with muaz99, hussainzahid007 and ahmedaleem. maybe we could go start our own art movement. the ‘pan movement’ not pronounced the english way though :D:D:D lol.

  23. sukaina on November 26th, 2008 @ 4:09 pm

U guys are extremely stupid .
i mean fine they have made a completely non-sensical structure which seems to have been made by a person with no aesthtic sense . u shouldnt be rude at least they made an effort even though the only thing they seem to be doing is obstructing pedestrian traffic.

  24. rahatrafiq on November 26th, 2008 @ 4:16 pm

wat do u mean man i think the pan ki peak ka idea was spot on.
think of it this way at least maybe now people wouldnt spit those hideous
phelm induced piles of liquid every which way . image these white structures filled to the brim with swirling red brown liquid. heheheeh

  25. mehakagar on November 26th, 2008 @ 4:23 pm

that is just beyond disgusting yar. i mean atleast somebody is trying to do something to our city. imagine if they hadnt made that structure wat would u be talking about now except for the same boring politics issue. and i completly agree with the guys up thr it must be something for the ideas exhibition.

  26. farwahaider on November 26th, 2008 @ 4:30 pm

well i agree with saad and muaz it will proberbly be used for peeing or pan ki peak. i mean look at the state other art pieces have suffered in the hands of the public . the sculptures disappeared from seaveiw and posters of the political candidates are stuck on the rest of them. thatz all they are used for anyways nobody gives them a second glance.

  27. anamboi on November 27th, 2008 @ 5:15 am

oh my god!! what the hek is wrong with you all? then you all say and especially you hussain that the givt doesn’t do anything and how is our mayor the 2nd best in the world and all that other crap of finding negativity about your city?! i mean so what this art peice is there, fine it is not perfect in our "arty" terms but atleast somebody tried. I agree with you all that pan peak and pee will flow into it and yes farwa that posters will be stuck in it but then thats who you are as a citizen. it is you farz to keep yourself and your surroundings cleand and if you fail to do that then it shows what sort of a citizen you are and how you like where you live. So, everyone, please grow up and be optimistic!!!

  28. durrabtariq on November 27th, 2008 @ 11:29 am

The piece is aesthetically nothing. I dont know how these projects get approved. Even the sulpture piece intalled at shon circle is a lifted idea of a german sculptor. It looks like it is showing a finger to the karachiets. But i do agree with Anumboi that it is there. If it would not have been there we all would not have been talking about it. I thinlk the government should commission only genniune and aesthetic artworks. Trust your own artists before they die or even let the youth create something for the beatification of the city

  29. mohsin2008 on November 27th, 2008 @ 4:08 pm

dude a this is fine but just because the govt is doing somethijng doesnt make it rite. i mean yeah they commisiioned an art piece but wat purpose is it serving . the purpose of the piece is to be aestheticay pleasing to the eye and if itz not then itz a huge waste of money and city resourses.they mite as we give the money to someone who needs it

  30. sukaina on November 27th, 2008 @ 4:13 pm

agreed but c here . you start from scratch ok. maybe they comissioned a reay ow eve artist or maybe the artist went to abstract . i mean we for a intents and purposes dont reay know wat it is for .

  31. mehreen on November 28th, 2008 @ 10:41 am

its like a huge spare box which is thrown on the road for the purpose of trashing. i agree they want to decorate karachi but in this way its much better as it is.

  32. beenish on November 28th, 2008 @ 10:58 am

i dont know the idea of putting a giant white piece consider as aethetics on the foot path

  33. sarahsiraj01 on November 28th, 2008 @ 2:25 pm

In response to the last couple of people i have a feeling that they all think its just a waste of money…but i think u guys r missing the big picture….keeping in mind its pakistan and people are reluctent to even spend a single penny even if their life was dependent on it…em sure there must be a logical explaniation to it….i like the idea that husain and the rest of the people said about it being an open canves for people to share there feelings to the world by throwing pan ke peek on it…and em sure if u go and check it out rite now…there might be some feelings u will find there ;P

  34. muaz99 on November 28th, 2008 @ 2:33 pm

in response to sarah siraj i think i agree to her point dat our govt is so kanjoos to even spend a penny, so i think there must be a reason behind it…but i still stick to my idea of it being an open canvase to the people to express there views and feeling to the world and be herd…haha or rather seen for that matter =>….
