Starting Feb 1,2009 PTA (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) has implemented a new system in which users will have to first activate their SIM before usage. Activation will include some info gathering by Call Center. No charges apply. This advertisement appeared in different papers for the same.

About time! Good work PTA!!!! It’s a normal practice in the UK to call and activate…since sim(s) are not only used in crimes but could potentially used as a trigger to activate a bomb! We need more security…
Finally a nice initiative by PTA! No more unregistered SIMs floating about the city for illegal shenanigans. No wonder the subscriber rate took a blow of 1M in Dec’08.
a new ray of hope has been instilled that maybe now NADRA would seriously think about issuing me a cnic….and not treat me as an illegal or extraterristrial alien….

Finally some practical thing has been done to prevent usage of unauthorized SIM(s)…
I am sure it will help to reduce flow of obnoxious calls to decent people (males and females suffer from it alike)
Well, as it is very positive step from PTA…
I believe all GSM Operators should offer free “call barring” facility by default.
It will discourage stray people from making obnoxious calls to decent people.
