Overheard on FM 103

Overheard an RJ on Mast FM-103 Wednesday evening : ”   Karachi, the capital city of the next world, Woops !, and now listen to ……..

What does ” The capital city of the next world ” exactly means ?

Brownish Green

With this little slice of rain we’ve had the last 24 hours, all of a sudden (as always after a brief shower) I enjoy looking outside my french doors and seeing greenery.  Fresh leaves of varying shades of green, all bobbing in the light post-rain winds, add to the pleasure of this lovely smell of clean, pure earth.

I just have one question:  What can be done to allow us this glimpse of greenery, instead of ‘brownery’ as it exists most of the year?  Are there any suggestions for solutions on how to keep our city’s vegetation clean of the dust, grime and air pollutants that keep building layers?

Your two cents please…

Ouh La La, It’s Raining!

The skies were fairly clear with a few clouds dotting the blue, after sunset a few more clouds united over the city to shower it with a bit of a sudden rain, enough to soak me dripping wet in just three minutes that how long the first shower spell lasted and now after an hour or so a light drizzle has again started. It looks like the prediction of rain in the city for coming Friday by the metrological department is coming true a bit too early as the scattered showers have started already.

Drive Carefully

When I took this shot 2 guys were trying to teach truck driver how to drive on the streets of Karachi. I don’t know the real reason behind this fight.

Slumdog Millionaire in Karachi?

Spoiler Alert: For those who still haven’t seen the movie, the post may reveal some of the plot. Read at your own risk!

A movie has multi-fold purposes. Some movies entertain, andsome movies educate. Still others make you think. Slumdog Millionaire, a movie shot in the slums of Mumbai, did a little of all of that. As the movie unreeled, telling the story of a street urchin who goes on to become a millionaire, I could’t help but place the boy in Karachi and wonder if his destiny would have been written any differently. Petrol Price – are you stunned?

How many of you know the actual price we buy petrol at and the price we pay in local market? Even though Karachiites are the most concerned in this case i bet only few know. Well then here is the true picture

Environmental Preservation or Budget cuts?

This is taken yesterday, in front of Agha Supermarket. Maybe this is the new directive given by Sindh Police to use horses for transportation rather than cars… Go green, yeah! :P

Doctors or Demigods?

Since I was born and raised abroad and after having lived there most of my adult life, I’ve come to expect a certain amount of quality when it comes to the most basic amenities in life.  Protection from police forces, drivable roads, clean water, and quality health care – all examples of the basics millions of us around the world take for granted.  All these topics are separate blogs in and of themselves but for now, my main gripe is the quality (or lack-thereof) of medical and dental care in this country – and the corresponding accountability that one would assume exists in such professions.  I’m not saying that high quality is not available here – I’m just raising the point ‘how is one to discern quality from mediocrity in this case?’  In a place where there is little to no regulation, no standardization and a blind faith general acceptance, without question, of whatever is being relayed by medical professionals – how is the average person to know when to do a figure eight and leave before the damage is done?  I once had to have dental work done and after a careful examination it was determined I would require two teeth extractions and one filling, each in subsequent sessions.  Later when I went in to have the procedures done, I was sitting in the dentist’s chair, fully comfortable with the doctor’s abilities, only to discover that the filling had been performed on a tooth that was to be extracted a week later!  If I hadn’t been conscientious enough or proactive in the business of my own healthcare, it would have just slipped by, I would have had to pay for it and then assume the mental and physical damage of having yet another filling done, in vain.  The sad part is that this took place in a well-renowned, ISO-certified facility.  (more…)

Karakoram Festival

Diversity is Strength. For any country, it is its cultural diversity which when accepted, respected and promoted, turns into strength. It is not only about economics of tourism but the knowledge of the very idea brings in a collective sense of pride to the nation. We are lucky to have such diversity, now we need to pull in the spirit of pluralism but experiencing, understanding and respecting all cultures.

The best way to know and enjoy any culture is to experience it first-hand in their environment. A good alternate can be a festival where we can their aesthetics, especially performing arts as it comprises of those various symbols and values which are dear to them. For people like me who are dying to visit our northern areas but haven’t had any chance till now, and largely all Karachites, there is a festival being arranged by Park Towers from 15th to 19th January which might turn out to be an entertaining as well as learning experience. The schedule is given in the poster.
