Port Grand Retail & Entertainment Complex

Yesterday I received an email from a friend about the most awaited food street of Karachi which is still under construction. If i recall correctly the place has been under construction since quite a few years under the Nati Jetty bridge. With this the curious I thought of investigating. I took the only clues that i had to further investigate (the email from a friend). On further investigation I found that Port grand a US based company is working on this project and it was expected to get completed in 2006 but for unknown reasons they are almost 3 years behind the project deadline.

National Bloggers Conference

Jamal AshiqainYesterday was a milestone achievement for the bloggers of Pakistan as the Information Technology Ministry, Government of Sindh organized the National Bloggers Conference 09. This is the first time in the history of our region that a government has not only recognized the importance of blogging but had also gone a step forward to appreciate and support the bloggers community without attaching any strings to undermine or restrict their right to the freedom of expression.

The conference held at a local hotel here in Karachi started off with great energy and enthusiasm, two of the front tables hosted a number of bloggers who meticulously covered the event live using a live blog applet, tweet feeds, and photo inputs trying not to miss out even the even the slightest bit of the details while battling a number of jittery but yet working wifi connections provided by the organizers.

Fire & Ice at Cafe Koel

Image: Jamal AshiqainA new coffee house cum restaurant has opened up on 26th street named Cafe Koel, this is located in the same lane as Cafe Flo [new location off 26th street]. The cafe is owned an operated by NoorJehan Belgrami and presents a very casual setting. Food presentation is good but needs a little more finishing touch, the best part of Cafe Koel is the assortment of appetizers and drinks, some love the Imili drink but I simply could not resist the temptation to gulp down two ice cold glasses of a Koel specialty drink called Fire and Ice.

Fire and Ice is a cold, sweet and spicy drink, so many tingling taste buds but simply delicious and it barely costs a Rs. 100. Cafe Koel is not too expensive and may run a main course dish at roughly 450-500 per head [main course and drink]

I would recommend people to swing by and test it out, it has the knack of becoming a must-go to coffee house in Karachi, but we still await a little more finesse

What If Today Is Lost, There Is Always Tomorrow..

lostI spotted this kid right outside expo center, sitting by the foot path. His humble merchandize, a dish full of Chola chart spilled on the dirty roadside, while he cried over his loss. I gave a few bucks to him and moved on. The next morning on the same spot I saw him again with a fresh dish of the same kind of chola chart, happy and giggling when he approached my car and I asked him “Aren’t you the same boy who was crying right there, yesterday” and he answered back with a broad smile “yes Sahib, this is all a routine of life” ….

Sea View sewerage

Every saturday I and my friend end up at Sea View for a walk minus everything else but clothes and shoes. No watches, no mobile and no other luxuries. But the presence of raw sewerage going into the beach makes us sad. Sadder still that not many people take note of it until they can actually smell it. Even then the registration of their protest is mild at best.

We, the Karachi wallas, have gotten used to the atrocities committed in our city in our name. Yet, as citizens, we do nothing and try nothing.

Plastic bags, excrete and people peeking pan are some other issues which need urgent attention. Otherwise, this beach would soon resemble Lyari naddi.
