Lacy Threads and Leather Straps – $1 Million business in Karachi

AQTH.comNew York Times published a story a few days back about a booming business in the heart of Karachi. A small mom and pop industry run by Adnan Qadeer and Rizwan Qadeer crunching out bondage and fetish goods for the American and European markets. It does go to show, that despite the economic downturn there is tremendous potential for business, though with the latest projection they have received courtesy NY Times I just have concern for their safety in light of the radicalization in Karachi.

New York Times – Deep in the nation’s commercial capital, just next door to a mosque and the offices of a radical Islamic organization, in an unmarked house two Pakistani brothers have discovered a more liberal and lucrative use for the scourge: the $3 billion fetish and bondage industry in the West.

Their mom-and-pop-style garment business, earns more than $1 million a year manufacturing 2,000 fetish and bondage products, including the Mistress Flogger, and exporting them to the United States and Europe.

The Qadeer brothers, Adnan, 34, and Rizwan, 32, have made the business into an improbable success story in a country where bars are illegal and the poor are often bound to a lifetime in poverty.

You don’t have to worry about their safety as they are doing this all in open. They have got a website with address and contact numbers. One can also locate them on Google Maps. Interestingly, one of their employee has her CV online, stating she works for "a leather garment company from which the leather garment export to all over the world mainly USA."

This NYT feature is clearly to disrepute Pakistan. See how it depicts Karachi as a slum, harboring terrorists. And these two "entrepreneurs" are labeled as low-class fellows with odd behavior. The article tries to paint Karachi as a strict and conservative city, which it certainly is not.

Also, the video was recorded clearly in winter. Why they wait so long to publish it? It may have given some business promotion to these two guys but clearly defamed Karachi, and Pakistan.

We live in such a pethatically hypocratic socitey…..while whole world admits that 30-50 % of all users time is consumed on porn while on net…( Some even more than that, ahem ahem )…….but if some company wants to make a living and provide jobs to sab ko maut anay agti hai……khud dekho to koi prob nai….koi job karay tu hungama kedo…..just visit int-cafes to see how 14 yrs olds pass there time there

It seems like aunty mother teresa got infuriated by my carefully worded comment about that software house.Like wasiq mentioned i was just referring to that thread by Unaiza on that issue here on KMB. BTW you don’t really need to get exasperated, you can continue working for that software house if you like, nobody would taunt you..

  17. fasee on May 3rd, 2009 @ 10:22 pm

    @ dcotor,

What if aunty worked there, its just maintiang websites, same as anyother websites….its not like they are indulging in explict videos of themselves on websites or sorts.

Its same as if we work as bartender in a bar while don’t drink themselves then the job is fine in my eyes.

For the record, one many years ago fasee applied and rejected by the company….:(

  18. بستنی (wasiq) on May 4th, 2009 @ 8:56 am

    Like wasiq mentioned

    thanks d0ct0r!

@fasee sab….Its same as if we work as bartender in a bar

Its never been the same for me…..once I just peeped into the KG bar….and they closed all the bars in town…

@fasee sab…..even though I never claim to be older or smarter than a fifth grader..(panchvee shiksha paas)….I’d rather say it was fun….things were getting so fucked up… the battleStations… power and cable not working….computer burning up people having green card to visit anytime….that I decided to try my luck at a cafe…I discovered that I can work better when I am pressed for time… typing improved and also the fallacy about pentium processors that I had been carrying for years got crumpled….after working on the outdated machines….now if somebody makes fun of my pentium four…"yeah kya aap abhi tak pentium four chala rahey ho…". than I say…han buss regal sey pentium 2 leyney ja raha tha kya aap aagay…lol

  21. fasee on May 4th, 2009 @ 11:03 pm

    @ wasiq

Sir no prblemz….people tend to buy the latest stuff they have no idea about…..have seen people using Imate cellphone just for making calls…..I wana say, tu phir nokia 1100 lay letay…:)

Same goes for intel duel core….yaar kaam kertay hain sirf ms word ya excell pe aur lena hai duel core……

Ab fasee ki tarhan samnay excell, pehcay songs, side me backups ya disk cleaning ya scanning chalti rehti hai…..tub tu duel core samjh ata hai….verna abi tak tu duel core ki games tak market me nai, wonder why people by it…except its FAD value
