Whose building is this?

On M. T. Khan road, there is a new building under-construction with a very modern and innovative design. It borrows classical elements in its architecture, and combines it very well with modernist steel and glass trends. Best part about this building is its innovative energy efficient design:  a glass facade is used in order to provide the interior with the maximum amount of natural light, and giant tensile fabric awnings are suspended in front of the facade to shield the entire building from the intense heat of the sun. Seems to work very well. This building is breaking new grounds in terms of architecture in Pakistan.

But who does it belong to??

There is no signage on the gate or on the building which gives information about what organization it belongs to. If it were any company or any other commercial organization, they would have been advertizing it to the hilt. However, nothing near this building gives its identity away…

Another thing worth noting is that whichever organization got it constructed apparently has no shortage of funds (even in these tough economic times). They have spent quite a fortune on this building’s decor and aesthetics (tazeen o araaish). Which leads me to speculate, is it a government entity? Only the government has an endless supply of money to throw away on such things… but then again, the government is not known for such ground-breaking architecture. So the puzzle remains unsolved….   Do you know who this building belongs to?

This place will soon have US flag and wll be labelled as " Consulate General of United States of America "

  2. SwERveUT (swerveut) on May 30th, 2009 @ 11:04 pm

nope. The US consulate is on another site. I will blog about that another time. However, this is most definitely not the new American Consulate. It is in no way secure enough to be it.

Confirmed. This is Arif Habib bank’s building. You can see its project at the bottom of this page: http://www.aaaprojects.com/currentp.htm

Strange, I dont think this bank is one of the top performers in Pakistan just yet…

  11. fasee on June 2nd, 2009 @ 8:08 am

    "Confirmed"

Yani abi tak main JHAAK mar raha tha, when I am their neighbour, I know what it is.

Besides its not a good performer and is in negotiation to be sold to some bidder like pak saudi bank is silkbank..and RBS is being finalised

  12. بستنی (wasiq) on June 2nd, 2009 @ 8:57 am

    @fasee sab…..what is a jhaak…? a fish or a fly…?
I feel there was an ulterior motive behind this very post….maybe somebody I really don’t want to know wanted to buy this building or has already and wanted my views…..well…

sir you said that americans are darpok quom and can never have a building like this for their consulate….over the past two three dacades we have observed the gradual fortification of the US consulate in karachi….I remember as a kid I used to walk in with my papa to return and borrow books from the library without a single security check…..used to play hide and seek there….than the Iranian revolution came they started sponsoring terrorism and religious fanaticism in pakistan….so the americans hired security agency…..and scanner etc…Iam sure many of us remember the Green skirts which later turned into dark blue pants…..(I don’t have a pic of it somebody please…)than they had to limit access….shut down the library….but the terror continued….had to close the visa section as well….and now they are forced to build a new place……I haven’t seen it yet….maybe its more underground than above the ground…..but I don’t think they could even dream about having this building(arif habib bank) or a similar one anywhere in karachi until they overcome the Iranian terrorism….or maybe like the drones they have an unmanned consulate……fully Automated….! lol

You’re one of those guys who likes to shine his machine
You make me take off my shoes before you let me get in
I can’t believe you kiss your car good night
C’mon baby tell me-you must be jokin’, right!

    Oh-oo-oh, you think you’re special
Oh-oo-oh, you think you’re something else

Okay, so you’ve got a car
    That don’t impress me much……!

Yeh sir, I remmeber, I was in school then college, used to visit there cultural centre for books or video libray or movie screenings, sirf ik guard metal detector ley ke baitha hota tha…membership was free…kiya zamana tha

  17. SwERveUT (swerveut) on June 2nd, 2009 @ 10:09 pm

@ Wasiq: You can call them darpok or whatever you may want. Fact of the matter is that Americans have full knowledge of the existence of the anti-American streak in Pakistan. I would trust them to be knowledgeable enough to not commit suicide by making their consulate in such a frail looking building as the Arif Habib Bank.

  18. بستنی (wasiq) on June 2nd, 2009 @ 10:45 pm

@SwERveUT……sir more than sixty percent of my family and friends have moved to america….with no chance of coming back…..Iam absolutely not sure why Iam here…..the study of Anti-american streak in Pakistan is one of my favorite subjects…..in my comment above….I have tried to reconstruct the gradual fortification of the us consulate in karachi and changes in attitude to the people of karachi….the americans stationed here or visiting used to eat and enjoy, shop and swim with us….now they don’t want to be in the same building with us….something bad must have happened over the years which forced them to be like this……they still think about us and wants to help us…..so what the hell happened ….????
If somehow the terror threat is removed…..why would they want to still live in a fortified building…..no no no….the americans are not like that at all….they would definitely have a building that is very modern in style and comfort….and helps improve the friendly relations of the people of the two countries….
after the cold war ended the only threat to american interests in pakistan are from the the Iranians and the afghans….the afghan issue is almost overcome….so now the clear and present danger is the Iranians and their sponsored terrorist….The govenment and the people of pakistan and especially the people of karachi….are very friendly to the people of the United states of America….

End summer 09, EU consulates will stop processing visas at city specific consulates in Pakistan. New Visa applications will be processed for Pakistan/Afghanistan citizens in respective Embassies in Abu Dhabi UAE, not even in Islamabad, Pakistan.

End 2009, visa applications from citizens of Pakistan to visit rest of the world will be handled by the Fedex/Gerry’s/American Express., and will cost 30% of the airfare of the city of landing.

Keep fingers crossed!, UAE has already placed a restriction of 1 visit (upto 90 days) per 90 days.

@fasee sab….sir since childhood from the days of good old PTV BugsBunny has been my favorite cartoon….and that scene in that cartoon….where in the middle of nowhere…there is a door…and everybody has to walk through that door….these metal detectors with Pakistan Rangers pointing their smg’s at ya…is the closest one can get to….

    We’re tiny, we’re toony,
    We’re all a little looney,
    And in this cartoony,
    We’re invading your TV!
    We’re comic dispensers,
We crack up all the censors,
    On tiny toon adventures
    Get a dose of comedy!
